Think I've got the hang of this play-by-post thing now, so here we go:
This is going to be a DnD in Space campaign. There's going to be considerable time spent down gravity wells, but none of the worlds you land on will be familiar to you. This campaign will be considerably shorter than say, Tyranny of Dragons. It will also start at 5th level.
I still like characters with some juicy deets in their backstory. "They doesn't really talk about their past." or "they don't know anything about their past" is a really lame cop out and I definitely won't go for it. I don't need or want a novel. Maybe a paragraph, or just a few vague ideas in sentence form will do the trick.
Character interactions are fun!If you don't like roleplaying with other players, this probably isn't the game for you because I definitely leave space for that.
Homebrew races/classes aren't things I go for.
Here's the warning: don't be ******** or bigoted to each other, you will just get yeeted out of the game.
I'm U.S. Pacific Time, but I don't think that really matters too much since we don't have to all be present at the same time. That being said, there are some days I probably won't be able to get on, so here's a quick sched:
Sunday: Playable
Monday: Nope
Tuesday: Probably Nope
Wednesday: Playable
Thursday: Probably Nope
Friday: Playable
Saturday: Maybe Playable
I like players to roll for ability scores, and re-roll ones(same thing if you do manual HP on level up)
For your character, here's the info I want:
Name & Age
Class
Background
Backstory Details
300 years have passed since the denizens of Terraspace discovered the magic of Spelljamming, breaking the boundaries of their system. A period of great expansion followed, with numerous colonies established in newly discovered Wildspace systems. Some worlds were more hospitable than others, but all had something in common: they were all devoid of civilization. Save for the odd beast or horror that inhabited the Astral Sea or Wildspace, no intelligent life was found. Given the vast number of diverse and intelligent lifeforms in their home system, finding the rest of creation to be seemingly empty came as a shock. Some systems were littered with the corpses of dead gods or the debris of blasted worlds, but not a single hint that civilization had risen elsewhere. The implications of the finding were hotly discussed in academic circles for a time, but quickly faded into obscurity as the excitement of expansion and discovery roared on...
You've received a message from an old acquaintance of yours, urging you to come Leoria in the CygnispaceSystem. They claim to have made the discovery that will go down in history, but need your help in securing it.
Assume all official races have a place inside the Terraspace system, though they may not necessarily all have inhabited the same world.
The central theme of this campaign is essentially the Fermi Paradox, but with DnD.
The "old acquaintance" is a half-elf by the name of Calvin. Your relationship to him can be whatever you wish.
There are regular old DnD things still happening in the background. Pirates await unsuspecting victims in the outer reaches of Wildspace Systems, factions vie for political and economic control across multiple worlds, missionaries attempt to spread their faith to new systems, etc...So whatever character backstory idea you have, it can likely fit.
Runerock Hammerbreaker - about 67 years old (Athough he'd never admit it)
Paladin, Soldier ( And a damn good one he'll tell any who'll listen )
Runerock of the Hammerbreaker clan was a feisty dwarf, he was a good fighter and had a proper view on life. He has three sisters and two brothers. He spend most of his youth in their mountain home before joining the military and serving with honors.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I've yet to play in a campaign with Spelljammer content, so this seems like the perfect opportunity. The premise sounds amazing too! I'll roll for ability scores now as it helps me with the character creation process. Will get back to you with a complete application :)
Ability scores: 181515141413
Note: I rolled for ability scored with the setting to always reroll 1's. If you prefer 1's to be rerolled only once, lemme know and I can reroll.
Edit 1: Hmm, not sure what happened with the ability score roller above. I don't want to risk a "rolls potentially manipulated" tag so I'll roll for ability scores in another reply. Edit 2: nvm, I guess they decided to work after a few page refreshes. Edit 3: not sure what's going on, but the ability score above keeps screwing up. If you hover over the numbers, it's showing a weird array of dice used to determine the rolls. Other times, it keeps rerolling my stats. I started with a 16, 16, 14, 14, 12, 12. If I get selected, I'll probably just reroll ability scores with the DM in a pm...
Fenris (Fen to friends) was created to be an assistant aboard one of many spelljamming vessels. For many years, he did just that, until one day the vessel he served on was torn to pieces by a Void scavver. Sent drifting through space, Fen was soon after found by Calvin (and anyone with him at that time). Helping him return to port and get back on his feet, Fenris then set out as an independent contractor. He was both scarred and motivated by the monster that had destroyed his last ship, and is eager to repair his past mistakes and hunt down the beast responsible. Still, a few years after being saved by Calvin, it seemed that the time to call in the favor had come.

Sounds neato! I'll have to get the backstory going later.
Currently my idea is for an Elf Wizard (school of evocation) named Tempus Retrovios. Short summary of the backstory being that he spend most of his 876 years of life in quiet studying, not really doing much. (Probably having Calvin as a pen pal these last years of late.) And starting to regret he didn't do much more in his life. Then after a magical accident reverted his physicality to ~early teen years (using human terms) decided to take it as an opportunity to remake his life, stop being cooped up all the time, and embrace the adventure of a lifetime.
If that kind of idea isn't your cup of tea, I'll probably swap over to an Aarakocra cleric (life domain) named Screechirk Hireek on a divine quest, with Calvin maybe being someone that he met during some other duty he performed. (Maybe he was aiding after a disaster, or was aided himself by Calvin during a wing injury. Not sure, something I'd have to ferret out.)
Cricket was a young hatchling when he was found by some wildspace rovers on a deserted astroid, with only vague memories of his tribe. The rovers adopted him into there group and named him Cricket on account of him looking like one. He then spent the next 20 years wandering the outskirts known wildspace. Part pirate part mercenary, he grew into a fearsome warrior, using the power of his mind and skill with blades. The people around him were rough and rakish, and he has a "jokster" sence of humor, his laugh being a series of clicks and clacks. Finally, he left his new family, wanting to find out where his original family is from and what happened to them. (whether he has seen another Thri-Kreen or if they are common in this universe depends on the setting - I can play them as rare and to date he hasn't found any or we can assume he has found some but nothing on his past).
Ability scores: 111716111516
Something odd is going on with the die roller...hmmm values keep changing and the warning doesn't pop up...
here are my original rolls 13, 16, 13, 13, 12, 12.
When Calvin made his discovery, he knew that he would need some serious muscle to help secure it. As he sent letters out to his acquaintances, he came across an advertisement from YourForged Industries (YFI). For a hefty price, YFI would custom build a warforged to suit your exact needs. Knowing his discovery was once in a lifetime, Calvin paid the price and ordered a warforged unit able to fend off enemies and survey areas whilst unseen.
YFI sent Calvin a High Kill Unit (HKU), a warforged equipped with offensive, defensive, and stealth capabilities. Though the warforged met Calvin's needs, it came with one bug. Units created by YFI are typically created without a personality core unless specifically requested. Calvin requested no such thing as he believed it would allow the unit to better follow orders. However, while HKU-404 had no personality core intact it still managed to develop a persona on its own. The YFI apologized to Calvin, giving him a full refund and allowing him to keep the unit for free. Thus, Calvin now has an HKU which renamed itself Haku: a destructive, versatile warforged unit that also enjoys woodcarving.
Picture of Haku:
NOTE FOR DM: I'm not sure what's going on, but the ability scores I rolled in my previous post occasionally reroll themselves (I've seen it change thrice now). I'm not sure what's happening, but the initial rolls I had were 16, 16, 14, 14, 12, 12. If I'm selected, I don't mind rerolling my scores with you privately if need be.

Ability scores: 14911151517
Name: Kaylin (they/them pronouns)
Race: Astral Elf
Age: 66 years old... as far as they know. Unbeknownst to them, they stopped aging while they were lost in the Astral Sea! They were lost for a total of 513 years, making their actual age 579 years old! I think. So they still think they're a young adult in elf years lol
Class: Monk (Way of the Astral Self)
Background: Astral Drifter (If I'm accepted, I'd love to pm and talk about what "secret or obscure bit of cosmic lore" Kaylin's been gifted with because of their Divine Contact Zivilyn, who I know nothing about other than that they're a true neutral god of wisdom)
Backstory: Kaylin was once a young, energetic Astral Elf who wanted to wander the cosmos and achieve glory and riches throughout Terraspace and Wildspace beyond! But, as with most ambitious, naive adventurers, things didn't quite go to plan. After Kaylin's 66th birthday, they set out into the Astral Sea to begin their quest... and promptly got lost. Very, very, very lost. With nobody in sight other than various annoying monsters, Kaylin felt hopeless. They were going to be alone forever, with no friends, no adventures, and no glory or riches, they thought. They briefly met a god of wisdom, Zivilyn, who imparted some important knowledge to the elf, but other than that, it was a pretty chill and lonely existence for Kaylin. However, over hundreds of years that Kaylin never kept track of, Kaylin realized that they could now start focusing on themselves more than ever before! And so, they meditated in silence, in peace, for a very long time, just thinking about who they really, truly were. And when the occasional monster came along to disrupt that meditation, Kaylin could put that immense knowledge of their mind, body and soul to very deadly use through martial arts, sometimes manifesting their soul to fight with them as one! When that failed, they ran and hid- but anyways, they now felt like they could finally come to terms with their soul, like they finally knew what was hidden from themselves all along. With renewed purpose and an incredibly relaxed vibe to them, Kaylin casually cruised out from the Astral Sea to help others in Wildspace find their true selves, and what potential awaits them alongside that knowledge.
(I have no idea why but I when I was reading over my backstory in my head I was using the Korg voice from Thor XD)
Name: Soren Thornpaw (<-- link to DDB character sheet) Age: 38 Class: Druid (Circle of the Shepherd) - 4 / Sorcerer (Divine Soul) - 1 Race: Custom lineage (from Tasha's, flavor as Sylvan multi-racial with parts human, aasimar, eladrin and dryad) Background and Backstory Details: See (first) Spoiler below.
Background: (Custom, based on Tasha's) Sylvan Wanderer Backstory: Burning. It was all burning. The ashes drifted down like an unearthly warm summer snow.
The woods and meadows that Soren's half-dryad mother Tara'ele had tended her entire life, that his half-eladrin father Elias' clan called home and defended with their lives. Until their agonized deaths. The land and the plants and the creatures, who Soren loved best of all. All gone. Seared away in moments. Incinerated and choked in a black blizzard of flaming ash.
Soren had run when the long dormant volcano had exploded sideways in a devastating cataclysm of fire and cinder. He had never been the strongest, nor the most warlike. And how could one fight a burning mountain anyway? He had tended to the beasts and the woodland spirits, shepherding and befriending them as his father had.
And now he is utterly alone. Bereft of his family and his flock, on the run in a brutal world. A prophecy tells how a child of the forest, an unwitting innocent who is as one with its birds and beasts, would need to venture forth on a great quest and pilgrimage to other worlds among the stars to bring back peace to his own home. In truth, he understands little of such things, but where else is there to go? So he sets out. To search for other worlds, he supposes. One day he would return from the stars to find a true forest home once more. For himself and his flock.
But, muses Soren Thornpaw grimly, that day is not today.
