Please, visit the above thread if you are interested in this gameplay style and want to participate. In this expedition participate: Justin, Minty, Egan, Lilgrea, and Rizo. Please, post a link to your char in your first post, so that we have easy access to your stats.
We will be rotating DM duty after each threat I suggest this order (for no particular reason): Rizo, Justin, Minty, Egan, Lilgrea. Feel free to pass your turn, there are no obligations, but be reminded that you earn 200XP additional XP for each threat you manage. Please, feel free to ask if you would like to DM a threat but don't know where to start.
We start with an intro, a roll for a complication (d4), a location (d20), and one threat (d20). The narrative will be that we have 3 threats while searching for the spot Rizo described (within the general , rolled location), then we have a 2 hours break when Rizo collects the Bitterroots, and we finish with 1d4 threats leaving the place.
Intro:
Sitting down with his companions finishing breakfast, Rizo explains that he ventures into the forest to find Bitterroot, a plant that can be used as infusion or to make Bitterroot beer. It's mostly common in Cormyr, but by magical means, that is performing a ritual cast of a spell, he localised a Bitterroot plants here in the forest. If no one has a better suggestion, he would like to go there and collect the plants. The tavern would certainly pay handsomely (200GP).
While some only needed to hear 'beer', all of you were convinced of the quest as soon as 200GP were on the table.
Everyone packed up their gear and the group left the town in the early hours of the day. Our friends headed into the forest while a brisk breeze from a cold night ruffled the leaves and the sky is turning slowly from an orange tint towards the clear of the day. They followed the road for a good hour or two before Rizo explained that they needed to venture further into the woods now. On their way he continues explaining about the plant they look for, "Bitterroot is an edible herb with meaty thick leaves and light pink or white flowers. It produces an acquired taste and has a smoky flavor... " (Liberally taken from: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Bitterroot)
Complication: 1d4[2] Competing party for first encounter (solve first threat in under 2 minutes or lose one treasure roll)
Encounter #1 (managed by Rizo's player): 1d20[2] - 3 Goblins (150 XP, 100GP extra from a previous raid on an elven village, 1 treasure roll if defeated in under 20 rounds (finished in round 3)
Time in between encounters 1d6 [6]: 65 minutes, short rest for characters
Encounter #2 (managed by Justin's player): 1d20[8] - 2 Bandits and a Thug (150XP, 1 treasure roll)
Time in between encounters 1d6 [3]: 5 minutes
Encounter #3 (managed by Minty's player): 1d20[1] - 6 goblins (doubled from 3) (300XP, 1 treasure roll)
Encounter #5 (managed by Lilgrea's player): 1d20 [8] - 3 Bandits and 2 Thugs (275XP, 1 treasure roll)
Time in between encounters 1d6 [6]: 65 minutes break of which 15 minutes a gas cloud dispersed
Encounter #6 (managed by Egan's player): 1d20 [na] - 1 Awakened Tree (450XP, 1 treasure roll)
Time in between encounters 1d6
Encounter #7 (managed by Minty's player): 1d20 [6,16] - Trip wire, two bandits and a thug (350XP, 1 treasure roll)
Time in between encounters 1d6 [5] - 30 minutes
Encounter #8 (managed by Justin's player): 1d20 [na] - Black Dragon Wyrmling in his lair (700XP, 1 treasure roll)
Bonus encounter #8: Environmental hazard (managed by Rizo's player): treasure chest rescue during cave-in and deadly trap (Hard, 1200XP+440XP, no extra loot)
Best Role play award: 250 XP to everyone (that is 50XP to everyone)
Total XP (final):
1000+150+150+300+200+275+450+350+700+1200+440+250 = 5465 / 5 => 1093 per char
This results in total XP for each Char, including threat managing (not final):
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
On their way through the thick of the forest, the group spots a squad of elven warriors navigating in roughly the same direction. As soon as they spot the party, they pick up their speed and vanish out of sight. What could they possibly be up to? Surely, Bitterroot is not so rare and thought after that one needs to compete for it. There must be something else lying ahead.
(gameplay explanations of the complication (mind you our characters don't know that): these elves look for something goblins have stolen from them. If we defeat our first encounter in under 2 minutes, we will find it before them, otherwise they will have it retrieved it before we get there. This results for us in loosing, or not, one roll on the treasure table at the end.)
Another hour later, the party arrives to a wide open clearing about 40 feet across. Around the clearing massive, magnificent trees reach far into the sky. The clearing itself is bare soil with only a few patches of grass but towards the middle of it appears to have been a bonfire. 'Might someone be around?' While the party look at each other in bewilderment, arrows whizz through the air. A trio of hidden goblins attack the party! One of them (G1) appears to be 40 feet West of the party while two other (G2 and G3) are 50 feet North-East, they all attempt to hide after they shoot (Bonus action).
Everyone with passive perception 12 or below is surprised and will not be able to act this first turn.
(Please disregard the Stealth rolls, apparently they don't roll before the first round, we just assume a stealth of 12 that is beaten by passive perception 13 or higher)
Let me describe the situation more precisely. North of the party is the large clearing in a circular shape, the party stands just on the edge of the forest. West of them, inside the thicket, is one Goblin, North-East of the party, also on the forest edge are two more Goblins. All three are hidden but their approach can be detected with a passive perception of 13 or higher, every character with less will be surprised by their attack which is imminent. The forest is difficult terrain (costs double movement) but the open clearing is not. For ranged attacks, everyone will be in half cover as long as they are in the forest and 10 feet of movement can be used to get three quarter cover while in the forest. Remember, we have 2 minutes (20 rounds) to finish the Goblins or we lose one treasure roll.
Current Initiative (round 1): Justin (22 - surprised), Lilgrea (22 - surprised), G2 (16), G1 (15), Egan (14 - not surprised), Minty (9 - not surprised), G3 (5), Rizo (3 - not surprised)
Map: (every symbol represents 5 feet, every second diagonal movement counts double)
(OOC - I see that Justin and Lilgrea both rolled the same initiative (annoying time for us both to get a natural 20!), and have the same modifier. The way I've always DM'ed that situation is to have both players roll another D20 to choose who goes first. If you're happy with that approach, my roll is 5 )

Ups, my bad. Now I see. I should have paid better attention. Apologies for that.
So, are the number of players in each adventure fixed and does the manager choose them?
No, there is no limit, neither min nor max. I just thought that we were a good number and we've been waiting for some time for everyone who wants to join. Anyway, these adventures are fairly short and once it is finished you can head out again with more/less and/or other people if you so desire. As per choosing, it basically all plays out in town, and as soon as a party decides to meet up and venture out, that's the starting signal. I didn't really choose anyone, I just 'invited' everyone who said that they would like to go into the forest and turned up during the breakfast 'starter event'. Hope that helps as explanation but feel free to ask if anything remains unclear.

With that said, what's Minty's passive perception? (I'm on mobile right now). Oh and please role for initiative. Thanks bud!
Your passive perception is 16. I've got your char sheet from the recruitment thread.
Minty's Initiative: 21
I'm sorry. I was asking Minty (I messed up the qoutes), this is Justin's player.
Sorry, I didn't double check that. Well, but you already determined that your passive perception wasn't enough. And you also rolled your initiative yourself. I guess we just disregard my post about Minty's initiative and let them roll themselves.
By now you all might have noticed that English isn't my native language... what I meant to say was: " Minty, don't forget to roll for initiative and what's your passive perception?"
