Does the urchin background pair well with a warlock? I'm working on a tiefling character who made a pact with Asmodeus so he can use the magic he gets from it to escape his life on the streets. Also, what pact boon would work for him? I'm thinking of going with pact of the talisman because my character doesn't trust anyone and I want him to eventually grow to trust his teammates enough to let them use his talisman.
A background - any background - is a good way to jump-start how you roleplay your character, if you don't already have a firm idea. Just thinking on "how did this urchin become a warlock" can create a good framework for a backstory as well as future RP.
I often find myself thinking of my characters like "an artisan who is a rogue" rather than "a rogue with an artisan background."
Argument could be made for a Chain pact as well. Slow to trust other so has attained an eternal, bonded companion he (or she) can trust. Otherwise, I like the backstory, as it offer a load of options to go wherever you want with it.

Backgrounds don't really do much other than add flavour. Take whatever will be most fun to play.
I don’t think the Ravnica backgrounds were a prudent design choice, but this really isn’t true any longer. If your character is or will ever be a spell caster, they’re practically required picks.

I went with talisman instead of chain because one of the starting items for the urchin background is a pet mouse, so my character already has an animal companion. Also, it would give my character a way to show that he's starting to trust his teammates.
I have decided at the moment to use the random character generator pick my characters now. It's fun to try to come up with a reason and backstory for the weird stuff it comes up with.
(I ignore the stats and spells and stuff because the generator is weird as hell, but otherwise stick as closely as I can to what it came up with).
Admittedly only done this twice now, but I really like it. There's always a story that can make any character.
I'm probably overthinking it, but I've also decided to give my character a component pouch instead of an arcane focus because it would be easier for him to come by. Since my character is an urchin, the only way he could get either of them is if he either stole them or someone threw them away. I figure a component pouch would be easier to steal and more likely to be thrown away than an arcane focus.
Oooh and then you could have crappy versions of components. Like, this is supposed to use lodestones, but I've worked out anything sticky does the job.
...as long as your DM is cool with it, and as long as you're not getting around costs...

In what way? Aside from a language or tool skill they don't typically add all that much in my experience - haven't seen Ravnica though since I don't play that setting.

Late to the party, but the Ravnica backgrounds are only meant to be used on Ravnica, where the guilds actually exist. And you don't need to worry about other backgrounds, because everyone who's anyone there is part of a guild. Just don't allow them elsewhere.

You know that "pet rat" that kept you company while you were surviving on the street? Turns out that it was an imp all along...

Just choose the ones that appeal to you the most. There's always a way to explain it.

It sounds like you have a good idea on who your character is and both of those choices sound like good fits for your story, so go for it. Good luck!

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
