Is there any intention of releasing an API or functionality/feature so users can create/develop/customize tools/resources using information from DND Beyond? It would be awesome to have a blank slate and create custom pages within DND Beyond or use custom created tools with the content I have access to.
Some of the things I would love to be able to do:
Pull character information (attributes, skills, hit-points,etc.) from the campaign characters to create my own character quickview page.
Pull character inventories into one location for a group inventory.
Create a stylized campaign notes and recap page.
Highlight or create notes in the compendium content similar to adding comments within a pdf/Word document or just writing in the campaign book.
Pull monster information effectively creating a custom encounter builder/initiative tracker.
Pull information from resources to create a custom "DM Screen"
I'm going to add to the API question, and wrap it with a bit of a business aspect for DDB. To give this context, I would love to incorporate this into the application I've built that allows users to create homebrew content with links to external sources.
IMO, a v1 of a DDB API (all the abbreviations!) could be quite simple.
Twitch authorization (oAuth)
Allow the end user to authorize with Twitch, and for the developer to store the token.
Create an endpoint to give search functionality to the developer
Search results via the API only need to be high level meta data (name, CR, AR, HP, source, and the DDB direct URL)
What this allows for is for me to create tools that allow the end user to search for say, a Mind Flayer, add it to the content they are creating as a simple name with a URL. Now when they share their homebrew creation with their players, or the public, a link to DDB's authenticated content is there. If the reader has purchased the content in DDB, great, they see the MF page. If they haven't they are prompted with a login / purchase option as they are today. That allows me have a more feature rich application, and drive revenue / page views to DDB.
Just wanted to make a post here to inform everyone that the time and date of the Live Stream has been changed. The stream will take place on Tuesday, November 21st, at 2 pm PST. If you are unsure what time this is in your area, you can find out here.
Look forward to watching the stream on catch-up (the joy of living in the UK....don't forget us catch-up folks in your giveaways ;) )
I've been using DDB for a while as a player, been starting to look at it for my new RL game but hitting a few snags:
- When are the improved Print-out Player sheets due?
- When will we be able to share a link to a player sheet (to show someone off DDB)
- When will there be a way to control how what areas of DDB a player has access to (I don't want them snooping through the modules/monster manuals etc.
- Any plans for tools to help DMs run the modules? (Ability to tracker progress, add notes, pre-roll tables etc.)
- Are there plans to add more info/pre-prepared elements to the modules to run the modules (similar to how roll20 does - linked maps etc.)
Aside from supporting DDB through our purchases/subscription and help by flagging issues and errors in the website, is there any other way we the community can actively help DDB improve?
I second this. With the avalanche of requests I see on the forum and being a dev myself for sure I want to help in some way.
At the moment, providing feedback, applying for a job, and showing friends and fellow gamers how useful and worthwhile it is are all great ways you can show your support.
At the last convention I went to, I got someone I know to give it a look. That right there is helping improve the site. A month before that, I got three other people to join.
One thing I recommend highly is gift cards. Being able to give someone else the PHB so they can hit the ground running would be a great help!

How I'm posting based on text formatting: Mod Hat On - Mod Hat Off
We just made our first purchase on D&D Beyond after staring at it since it's inception. We're fairly happy with everything and my players are grateful for having such a quick resource that we can all share.
My biggest pet peeve is that we struggle with the use of it during play testing. My players are new and when you export the sheet to paper the paper doesn't list what invocations or abilities a player has or how they work. They have to use the digital version or print separate notes for the abilities. Is there a chance we will see more customization as to what parts of our character we can print out? Even if it's just a large square PDF page with all the details of our characters abilities/traits/feats and what they do.
The first is a simple Dnd Core Package as it were, with a couple of suggestions as to what could go in it or whatnot, the second is a far more complex suggestion about implementing some kind of online DnD digital version rather then a physical board.
As you can imagine, the former seems easy and the latter I'm not even sure can be done even as I suggest it. So I guess my question would be the feasibility of both of these?
I might end up missing the stream so if someone can reply to me with the answers if it gets answered that would be great.
Your post says Wednesday the 22, but the date and time, as well as the link given to check what time it is for me, all say Tuesday. Is the live-stream on Tuesday, or on Wednesday?

Thanks for spotting that. I edited to represent the newest date/time. It will be on Tuesday.

Are there plans to implement a Homebrew Class feature? From what I've seen, there isn't a way to use Unearthed Arcana or DMs Guild Classes, and a Homebrew Class feature might be a good way to let players use those resources by copy+pasting the rules for them.

*edited for spelling.
They have said in the past that they do not have plans on implementing full homebrew classes, though they do have plans to implement sub-class homebrewing, which I'm sure they will address tomorrow. The reason (from my understanding) for the lack of class homebrewing is that coding the tool-set to work with an infinite number of possible classes is incredibly difficult, and would especially be challenging to make "user-friendly". That said, I am sure that they will end up considering this route, as it among the most requested features. They have plenty of other, higher-priority (in their view) tasks to increase the functionality of the tool-set, such as adding built-in Dice-Rolling, Integration into voice chat, tool additions to the Campaign Manager for DMs, and the "lesser" homebrew options. (to name a few)
As far as integrating Unearthed Arcana, they have stated that they plan to at least consider it, but that will probably be at a later date. If I were to guess, I would think they are going to have the options be built in each month, and adjusted to match the current iteration when changes are made, at least in regards to classes, sub-classes, tweaked classes, and expanded character options.
P.S: I am not a mod. Just a citizen excited for the future of D&D Beyond, and trying to keep current on their work. :)
Interesting. I would think that they would implement at least the DDAL Approved Unearthed Arcana classes to the creator. Anyway, thanks for the info, much appreciated!
Could a high level overview of the topics and questions discussed on the Live Stream be posted to the D&D Beyond page or forums shortly after the conclusion of the Live Steam? Unfortunately not every one is able to participate live and having a high level review of the discussion in a text format could be beneficial to a number of users of the site.
1. What types of DM tools/Campaign Management tools are being discussed or implemented? Timelines for this are cool too. :) 2. Will there be D&D Beyond Gift Cards for Christmas? Particularly ones that just say "Beyond" on them, for religious family members that might ostracize their "fallen" kin upon discovering their dark secret. 3. Will there be sales around Christmas Time, and if so, will they last past the holiday, to allow for those of us who received cash to make our purchases after Christmas? 4. Homebrew Maps would be a great implementation. Has this ever been discussed? 5. How is the process of bringing in 3rd party content creators going? For instance, I'd like to purchase Kobold Press' Monster Book, but would much rather have it on D&D beyond. I know I can privately homebrew the monsters in if I purchase the book in physical format, but would rather just make the purchase online. 6. Can you make a video (or series) showcasing your product on Youtube, that doesn't include yet-to-be-implimented features? I find a lot of reviews and comments on Youtube are ill-informed because it is difficult to understand what D&D Beyond is, and how exactly it functions, without digging through the forums. Reddit and Youtube are both privey to misinformation. Trying to convince my friends who DM to utilize Beyond is tough when all the reviews on Youtube came before the launch, and thus have incorrect information and negative viewpoints. Have Todd showcase different, existing tools, explain subscriptions, and so on. 7. Can you make the change-log visible on the homepage or something? Hard to get to, but I LOVE that it exists, and feel that more people should see it when visiting the site.

This is something that is planned, and will begin with tomorrow's live stream.

It's at 10 pm in the UK, so not too bad!

That is true - might crack open a beer and find an excuse to shorten the Tuesday game session.

So, I suggested today 2 things that might be cool here: http://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/d-d-beyond-feedback/9408-suggestion-of-intro-bundle-and-a-more-complex-dnd
