I'm playing as a multi Cleric level 2 & Wizard Level 9 wizard. I have up level 6 spell slots but it wont let me learn 5th level Wizard spells. I was hoping someone could explain to me why that is.
Hi there! I am new and created a multiclass 1/2 elf Warlock/Rogue in D&D Beyond. 1st level with 0 experience points in both. D&D Beyond created it with no problem. When I went to use it in a campaign, everyone said I had to delete one of the classes till I reached 2nd level and then I could add the second class. Ok, if that is the rules, I'm good with that. But why did D&D Beyond allow me to create it in the first place?
Sorry. They had me change characters and I deleted that one since it was supposed to be impossible. Yes. He was 1st level in both Warlock and Rogue with 0 experience points. They said he couldn't start the second class until his first class reached 2nd level. But D&D Beyond created it anyway. Is D&D Beyond wrong or my DM's?
I think the other players were jealous that I had a character that was listed as 2nd level because we were all supposed to start with first level characters. I'm sorry, he might be stronger at 1st level, but when they are sitting pretty at 10th level, I will be at 5th level...
I mean anyone can create a new 1st level character and add a class. There is a button at the bottom says, "add another class". Press the button and it gives the same list of characters with ones crossed off that ability scores won't allow. Then you create a character at 1st level with 2 classes. Yes, at the top it says 2nd level but both classes are 1st level.
Now here is the question, D&D Beyond let me do it. According to my DM's You have to start with one 1st level character with one class, until he reaches 2nd level, then you add your second class.
So, who is correct? Does D&D Beyond have a glitch or are my DM's not aware of some particular rule?

Dndbeyond is not going to restrict a character's progression. People are always making up new characters and going through their progression to see how their character sheets look at higher and higher levels. Or they are playing in a campaign that starts at level 3 or 5 or 8 or whatever. Or a group is doing a high level one-shot where everyone is bringing in a level 20 character.
It's not a glitch, it's a feature of the website. At the end of the day it's just a digital character sheet, always defer to what your DM says, they make the rules at their table.
I'm confused. Your answer doesn't have anything to do with my question. My question just asks the simple question does a character have to attain 2nd level in one class before beginning a new class. This is all about creating a 1st level character for a new campaign. The multi class rules are clear as mud, especially how to start a multi class character..
Your DM is correct. Class levels are cumulative, not counted separately for each class. You start as a first level character, and since you can only gain a level in a second class by leveling up, you cannot start with two classes. Here's the relevant section in the basic rules, the most important part being:
With this rule, you have the option of gaining a level in a new class whenever you advance in level, instead of gaining a level in your current class. Your levels in all your classes are added together to determine your character level. For example, if you have three levels in wizard and two in fighter, you're a 5th-level character.
So in your case, 1 level warlock and 1 level rogue = a 2nd level character. Having 5 levels in each would make your character a 10th level character, just like the non-multiclassing people in your campaign.
DND Beyond isn't a smart enough tool to know if you're creating a new character at level 1 for a new campaign, versus making a new 10th level character, and it's really not good at being accurate with applying XP-to-level calculations. Even when it 'lets' you do this, you'll notice it still only gave you the starting proficiencies of one of the two classes, meaning it thinks you started at level 1 for one of the two classes, then at level 2 added the second. It's just not applying the XP-to-level values correctly.
