I mean really anything works. Drums are fun, so are flutes, sometimes you don’t even need an instrument. I’ve had bards that instead use slam poetry and watercolor paint. All really depends on you.

How about a flute made from the horn of an Ibex, one of those long straight twisted horns? Or, if you want to be the center of a scandal, how about the horn of an unicorn?

I just looked up "twisted animal horns" and didn't find what I was looking for, so I checked out the Narwhal. Now, that's what I was thinking about. And there is no reason we couldn't imagine it sounding like a saxophone. I may even talk to my next DM and see if he'd go with me having a narwhal tusk "flute".

I feel like a reckless bard with a cabasa would be really funny, like irl I picked one up once and it fell apart IMDEIENTLY (percussionist problems i guess). But a kazoo or a recorder is absolutely an amazing choice.
Bagpipes is always a solid choice. Pair it with Prestidigitation to make flames shoot out from the pipes - seems like something a Tiefling could get behind. (Search "Flaming Bagpipes" on YouTube - you won't be disappointed.)

I dislike that the system still makes me choose 3 instruments by default instead of letting me pick from options that include things like juggling clubs, tap dancing or ballet shoes, magicians deck of cards, book of poety, etc. other options.
I don't necessarily fancy the seemly default nature of having to sing and play instruments either.

I tend to flavor my bards as story telling norse skalds rather than minstrel-esque song and dance men. Horns are the instrument of choice, and used like Boromir uses his horn.

Nods. I also tend to do the storyteller/chronicler style. My original inspiration (in spite of the fact that he was technically a wizard rather than a bard) was the Mako character from Conan; then later the bard from Journeyquest. I like to imagine I'm daily updating my record of my party's derring do's in order to write an Epic about them when all is said and done.

I've been in a jazzy / noire kind of mood recently; and I realized that the official "Horn" instrument could easily be flavored as a saxophone.
A tiefling playing smooth jazz in a smoky nightclub sounds pretty slick.
