I played an EK, my character’s best friends were Booming Blade and Green Flame Blade as Melee spells. I ended up going both Warcaster and Magic Initiate (wizard) to get a couple extra Cantrips and learn that 1 extra spell (once you learn it you can also cast it as normal too). It wasn’t bad, but if I had to do it again I would probably dip into War Mage Wizard subclass instead of taking the Initiate feat.
Thing is you delay a buch of stuff multiclassing, spell progression, attacks, feats and features, theres definitely a trade off that takes a while to come online
for War mage Wizard it is probably worth the delay, pretty potent abilities on that one for the combat oriented.

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
