Thanks for going through all of that you guys. This makes a lot of sense on something that has frustrated me for years. I just got tired of purging and stopped using any custom images (which is not a lot of fun). Having created and liked a lot of homebrew and being very active on the forums over long periods of times with lots of likes... I guess I'm resigned to this continuing to be the case. I was surprised when it started happening to official artwork (I was working on some tritons and was looking up different sources... and suddenly none of the artwork was there). Finding hundreds of likes across four years of forum posts? Nah. Going back through the homebrew I've given ratings to in that time as well? No, thank you. There are other ways I can deal with artwork for specific characters.
I just stopped using chrome for dndb. It solves my problem.
I don't use chrome; I use Edge and it occurs, whereas when I switch to chrome it doesn't occur.
The cookies are browser specific, so your least used browser will be fine. The only way to get rid of the problem is a hard cookie delete as described earlier.
been slowly losing image files for past month or so ... finally reached the point where maps and images in purchased content, as well as official images for monsters, etc. aren't loading anymore now even my own user pic isn't loading... searched forums to see if others have found any solutions or work-arounds... am using AboveVTT & don't want to accidentally clear any stored VTT data... ... found this topic...
...
I am incredibly frustrated that so much user work has gone into this - and the last DDB response or update was 14 July 2021 (post made by @davyd). Since that time there have been a lot of very precise, very informative discussion locating and isolating an area of concern. Do we have any way of knowing if DDB has come back to this topic & received that info? Where is the confirmation that DDB has passed this along to relevant admin or devs or whoevers?
When my images started to not load, I bounced through a couple discord channels with other DDB / AVTT users - they all said that it's a known issue with DDB. not with chrome, not client-side. not with any particular browser extensions. D&DBeyond... where the heck are you?
If I'm understanding this correctly... DDB first gives users a ginormous cookie. Then when users try to use the ginormous cookie, DDB refuses it because it's too big. And then DDB adds even more chocolate chips to the cookie.
FWIW - I'm on PC running Windows using Chrome browser (yes, everything is up to date as of this post). I've had this account with no problems for over 3 years I own all the books and bought all current preorders I have bought an unbelievable number of books as gifts for friends I recently upgraded to a Master account
As far as I can tell, this problem started up for me just recently - as I began to DM a game (at which time I increased my usage of both homebrew and the forums) my 'thanks given' is only at 52, I have only published 39 bits of homebrew If I've rated any homebrew it can only have been a scant handful I have otherwise made no particular changes in my DDB habits & usage I do not have this problem using Chrome as my browser on any other webpages - only DDB
If the issue seems to be occurring more (exclusively?) for users of Above VTT, then the recommended course of action would be to disable the extension. D&D Beyond cannot provide support or guarantee of site functionality when using unsupported, unofficial, third party extensions or add ons that modify or otherwise interact with the site.
Does this issue occur when you're using a browser that doesn't have Above VTT running for example?

Hi Davyd, thanks for the response! Was not expecting that, very nice surprise. Here's some screenshots taken under different conditions.
(2) browser: Chrome, extensions: AboveVTT uninstalled; extra: browser was shut down, reopened, and a forced refresh used huzzah, we have re-gained Feath's character pic... but still nothing else??
(3) browser: Edge, extensions: all chrome extensions installed, extra: I do not use this browser - it's a fresh install with no history, no cache, and no cookies. I copied over my installed extensions and bookmarks from Chrome.
Tada! All the same extensions as I use in Chrome, all installed and turned on.... a totally clean browser... and all images loaded.
Is there anything else I can provide that can help assist? TY for all your hard work.
@Amata - This would suggest that AboveVTT is having a negative impact on the caching or cookies for the site. Removing AboveVTT and then clearing your cache/cookies for DDB might resolve the issue wholesale.
@DataDwarf It's a possibility your site cache has been corrupted, meaning images are no longer cached correctly. This is common across high resource sites like DDB, and the best solution is to log out, clear cache and cookies, and log back in again
However, I have found that by clearing the value in the cookie, as indicated in this thread, and not liking any posts or homebrew, I have managed to prevent the issue from reoccurring. Losing the ability to like posts or homebrew is not a huge loss to me.
this is basically what I'm going to do, too. I don't want to switch to Edge or any other browser because of one webpage that has a snarl in their cookie code somewhere or whatever. I'm fine grabbing the cookie-editor and just clearing that cookie out any time it causes issues. And with the cookie extension I can confidently delete only the specific cookie responsible, and not have to clear all of my browser's cookies and cache every time the problem pops up.
I am sad about not being able to like or rate in the future once I've gotten that cookie under control. It's minor compared to having to delete my VTT campaign info (due to browser clearing), or having to deal with a fundamentally broken digital resource while still paying a subscription for it... But I actually really do like being able to give others a cheer, a thanks, a good rating on content well brewed, or a general sense of "good point, well made." I like being able to have some interaction with the others in this community, albeit a relatively small interaction. But in my experience, I generally find that it's the relatively small stuff that truly makes or breaks a community.
That is to say, hey DDB - please don't shuffle this off your desk. Help us resolve this issue, regardless of where it's coming from or why.
@Amata - This would suggest that AboveVTT is having a negative impact on the caching or cookies for the site. Removing AboveVTT and then clearing your cache/cookies for DDB might resolve the issue wholesale.
I understand and see the logic behind arriving at this conclusion. It is, however, incorrect. And, on a personal note, I am not going to do a wholesale wipe of cookies and cache for this website because my cookies and cache contain information I find valuable and I prefer remain intact. So, please stop suggesting that as a solution to me. A solution that is untenable to a customer is not actually a solution. Someone at DDB needs to make a commitment to work with customers to find a mutually agreeable resolution to the issue.
There has been excellent work documented in this topic thread that points to some very concrete facts, that have led to a solid working theory.
this is encountered across different browsers
this is encountered in browsers with and also without browser extensions
per dev view in browsers, issue involves the server side rejecting one or more cookies from the client side due to exceeding data size maximums
a user has already identified one specific cookie element that is suspiciously large
multiple users have tested this hypothesis by removing that one specific cookie element
this solution has repeatedly worked uniformly, independent from browser type, presence or absence of browser extensions, amount of DDB usage, longevity of DDB account, and/or other factors suggested by DDB staff as alternative possible solutions (e.g. clearing browser cache, uninstalling extensions).
as the "ratings cookie" hypothesis is now generally accepted; and as there is currently no evidence to dispute it - we've moved beyond hypothesis and into Mairondel's Theory of the Ratings Cookie
all things being equal, theories are basically equivalently true... so until there's some evidence DDB can point to that demonstrates that the ratings cookie is not the element involved in the issue.... Mairondel's Theory of the Ratings Cookie is as much true fact as (for example) the Theory of Gravity.
therefore, DDB needs to look at the ratings cookie and sort it out
To reiterate - I have the same issue as @Amata (as do many others) and have to this point never heard of AboveVTT. I use Beyond20, but the issue occurs regardless of extensions that are enabled, disabled or uninstalled altogether. Edge does not have the problem at the moment, but I do not wish to switch and evidence shows that it would only be a temporary solution anyways.
Deleting site data after logging out restores pictures for between a few hours and a few days, then they're gone again.
This sucks. Please do something to fix it. It really impacts my user experience.

This fixed the issue for me. Thank you, Davyd.
I am super glad that this worked for you! If / When the problem comes back again, please be sure to return to this topic and let us know.
I would be honestly interested in getting a "feel" for how long it takes post-browser-wipe to accumulate into an issue again.
I have Chrome sync cookies turned on and Chrome sync extensions turned off.
I have the AboveVTT and Beyond20 extensions installed on my home computer. If either is enabled, it's never at the same time.
I do not have AboveVTT or Beyond20 extensions installed on my work computer.
This issue persists across both computers while browsing dndbeyond.com.
If I visit any forum thread or load up any homebrew description, either clicking on the + on My Collections or My Creations, or viewing the description page directly, I immediately begin seeing issues with images on this site loading.
If delete the field from my the site cookie, clear my cache, and hard reload and then navigate most any other part of this website then I suffer no ill affects and the website I honestly love works flawlessly.
Evidence has shown that the error would reappear as soon as 1 minute later. If the user visits a page in the Forums, or Homebrew. Those were the parts of the site suggested previously that trigger this. In my experience, the Forums definitely do it. Homebrew, as well, I believe. So it's not a matter of time passing. it's about what parts of DDB you access.
It is ironic that I would very much like to upvote Amata's recent posts, in order to draw attention to them. But upvoting is one of the things that causes this error. You made excellent posts.

aww, thank you. and there's lots of upvoting I'd be doing for everyone here, too. 💜
So... the homebrew and the forums are two of the big features of D&DBeyond. I know that the integration with homebrew, especially, was a selling point for me. And as I've gotten more involved with both sides of the table, my visits to the forums have increased exponentially. And I've upgraded my account so that I can do more... I'm just guessing, but I think that is the business goal for DDB, right?
The result of this issue with the unreasonably large cookie is that I, and many others, basically have to "voluntarily" stop using two of the feature services that DDB offers. That doesn't feel good. Even if this issue genuinely does not have a server-side solution, we don't know that at present; and I would think that DDB would want to ensure customers were able to fully access all the lovely features they have been working so long and so hard on.
If I were the code monkey getting flogged to create features for DDB, I know that I would seriously upset if the more involved a user got, the less of the website they could enjoy. I would want to know all about it so I could tackle the conundrum; I would do it even if I had to do it in my personal time instead of as part of my on-the-clock work hours. I'm kinda obsessive about these things, and puzzles, and wanting everyone to always have a great time, even at my expense. But I learned books and thinky-thoughts instead of coding and comp-sci, so I am literally useless right now. . .
And so far, responses from DDB have given the impression that nobody is even going to take a poke at it. (If that's not the case, I would be very happy to be wrong). The happiest thing for me right now, would be a response from DDB demonstrating a lurking variable causing the correlation between image loss and the rating cookie element. Even though it would ultimately mean going back to gather more data, again ... it would also mean that someone at DDB actually dug into this weirdness and has something to report.
Yes, this! Unfortunately, every time they post the "clear all" boilerplate, someone responds with "Hey, thanks! That worked for me!" and they see it as a closed issue. Sadly, many of us gave up on using the forums and doing homebrew just so we could keep using the site. Being on a Mac when I play, primarily, takes away some of the options, especially if you want to integrate with VTT (Roll20 for me with Beyond20). If the cache clearing would work for a reasonable amount of time, I would be mostly happy with that response, but... *shrug*... by using the site anymore with normal things I try to do here, it's back to broken within minutes to hours. As it is, I've just given up on artwork (even official) as long as I can still use the character sheet. Every six months or so I'll come back to these threads and try something different if it's suggested and I'll do the cache clearing thing again in the hopes that it works this time. I remain hopeful... one day... somewhere... somehow...
I too will throw my hat into ring here as I am seeing the same issue. It has only popped up for me recently however as I wasn't seeing this problem just a month or so ago. I can confirm I've used the homebrew section and upvoted since then.
The reason AboveVTT users are having this issue is because the extension links directly point to images from ddb. If you are affected by this issue, an AboveVTT user knows immediately that images are not loading. I don't see an extension being able to affect the site cookie and if so that would be a huge risk or something, right?
AboveVTT is not causing this issue, AboveVTT cannot be used when someone is affected by this issue.
I'd like to add that now my dice rolling isn't working. Is this part of the same error or should I make a new thread? Portraits are one thing, but now this is content I've spent money on not working...

I think it'd be good to explore that issue within this thread, just because after looking at some recent dice-roll issue threads, I wonder if the ever-growing header size could be messing with the roller as well... maybe by preventing the die textures from getting to your browser properly? I'm not sure how DDB programmed it.
In any case, see if clearing that site cookie helps with die rolls.
