I think the nagging question is if they are making us buy new for new digital content then for how long is our existing digital content going to remain? My group has zero interest in updating to the 2024 rule books and as such I and they are very interested in preserving our 5E content which we invested in. I have not seen an official statement as to what is going to happen to our existing digital content. This is a further concern since we are blocked from making a PDF backup of our digital content.
This is BS. We should get credit if they are updating old rule books with a new ruleset that doesn't change the DnD version. Another damn cash grab. We need a class action lawsuit for this.
And they should allow access for digital content. They have for some of the legacy species.
Given that it is perfectly legal, I doubt a lawsuit will do anything.

What do you mean allow access for digital content? The Legacy options are only available if you had purchased them before they are no longer available. That is likely what will happen with the 2014 rule set.

Why?
Your existing books still exist. Keep playing that version. People still play 1e; they don’t ask for free stuff after a rules update.

If I have most of the books already, do they update or do I have to buy all new 2024 editions?
Buy new.
