Not to argue with you but it really makes it hard for people like me to want to use dndbeyond when we already own 4 of the books and have to turn around and repurchase them to be able to see the same thing in the application. I understand all the reasoning that you have, but it also sucks that there is no way for me to put the stuff I've already paid for once, onto this tool for playing D&D. like i will probably never buy those books on the app which really sucks because I cant see 90% of the material I'm going to be using on a regular basis as DM. so i have to use some of the app, and still have my physical copies of the books with me to play. Not to mention this isn't as simple as going from store A to store B and getting stuff for free, its more about buying stuff at store A and being able to use it at store B. Think of it more like this. when I buy a new blue ray disk movie, I get a code that also gives me a digital copy that allows me to watch it from somewhere else other than the physical copy. People aren't out here trying to scam people over these books, they just want to be able to use their physical copies on the app while also purchasing new content. No one wants to spend like 70 bucks on two different copies of the PHB or DM guide.
This problem sucks on both sides. Consumers who purchased books before dnd beyond was available/in their knowledge, or prefer the physical copies (all of which applies to myself) feel unsatisfied because people like myself would have to spend an additional $200+ in order to use a resource that they already own. By using that resource online I am not cheating Wotc in any way, since I have already purchased their content and can use it as I please.
On the other hand it is a legal nightmare for DND beyond to find a way for consumers like myself to safely and legally use these resources on the site. I would love to see a stronger partnership between DND Beyond and Wotc where Wotc helps find a satisfying solution to this issue, such as with proof of purchase of a physical copy waiving a claim to any profits made on DND Beyond, allowing the price to drop significantly (from $30 to somewhere around $10). If this were an option I would only pay somewhere around $70 for the privilege to use the books I already own on this site, which I would gladly pay.

You can already legally use your physical books on this site by using private homebrew to manually integrate your physical books with the digital tools.
What seems like a fair price to you is not a fair price to businesses, and businesses should not be forced to bundle their products either. Just because consumers have bought Harry Potter books physically does not mean they are entitled to the digital versions for free or for a lower price, and this applies to D&D, other books, movies, music, videogames, and many other things.
I know this is an old post...and I too have a hard copy content (Walmart version of) LOST MINE OF PHANDELVER which my son and I are playing every other day, advancing in the story line). Tho I wished this would make it into the digital version...I am OK with the fact that I don't have it...it happens...BUT
The point I wanted to make as I necro-this post back to life: There is also the ability to use DnD Beyond with Roll20 and that App on Steam. So BOOM...that is free! You can't beat that! I cont care for roll 20...but the zaps I play with on Discord love using that place...so I am stuck with it.
@Stormknight Thank you and your team. I am noticing the changes as you improve stuff for the better. Lost Mines of Phandelver is available digitally on Beyond. I have both the physical boxed version and the digital version, and I personally think having both is worth it.
I recently added two books to my account as well and I am happy! I get to play a Tortle now...lol...
If you are interested in getting the boxed sets, I recommend purchasing the physical box version of the Essentials Kit. The physical version gives you a code that unlocks the digital version here on Beyond without extra charge. The physical version also gives you a 50%off code on the Player's Handbook.
I already own the LMoP box set bought at Walmart. It was my intro to D&D...still is...I am not done with it yet. Me and my son play it
However this reply is to say that what you said is not true...
No code to unlock the digital copy...at all...I tried entering everything that looked like a code from the books and the box...
I like and respect D&D Beyond. but I refuse to buy something twice...I am an Army Retiree; just now getting into this super-nerdy stuff...
I think you're confused.
There's "the starter kit" and "the essentials kit".
The D&D Beyond one is the Essentials Kit and includes a code to unlock the adventure, "Dragon of Icespire Peak", and content on D&D Beyond. It also comes with 50% off the PHB.
The Starter Kit comes with the adventure Lost Mine of Phandelver. There are no codes for D&D Beyond in this. That's why you don't have them, SARGE5th.
As for "buying again" -- you don't have to. For character sheet use you can homebrew what you need for private use entirely for free.

BROtato skin, I don't think I am confused. I am sure I know who I am. Did you not take the time to read what I wrote? or was I accidentally not clear enough? I am sure me and someone else were discussing LMoP not DoIP.
...and about "Buy Again" : is to get the full content of what I already have on hard copy into digits...I am aware that you can just check out what others have already pre-made (homebrew) and use it as well...
...would also like to add that I am just getting into it...not yet (and probably wont - other responsibilities take precedence) get into it so far into it that I would sit here all day rewriting stuff just to homebrew it...thanx for trying to assist. Cheers...
Did you not take the time to read what I wrote? or was I accidentally not clear enough? I am sure me and someone else were discussing LMoP not DoIP.
I did read what you wrote. You said in response to XXXGammaRay "However this reply is to say that what you said is not true" and went on to clarify "No code to unlock the digital copy...at all".
But this is incorrect. XXXGammaRay said the ESSENTIALS KIT (which contains the DoIP adventure) contains codes for unlocking on here and was something he added as a suggestion towards your potential next buy, since it provides better value than the STARTER KIT (with LMoP) - the one you have , since the Essentials Kit also comes with a code to unlock digitally. This is true.
You were confusing the two kits. The Starter Kit you obtained doesn't have digital codes, and XXXGammaRay wasn't saying it did. It's the Essentials Kit that has codes.
...and about "Buy Again" : is to get the full content of what I already have on hard copy into digits...I am aware that you can just check out what others have already pre-made (homebrew) and use it as well...
Let me address these two in reverse order:
1 - I never mentioned checking other people's pre-made homebrew. What was that you were saying about reading posts?
2. You already have most of the content available on here: most of the "rules" info is in the Basic Rules source on here, for free. You don't need the adventure as a digital copy - this isn't a Virtual TableTop, if you already have the book physically, you can run the adventure using that. There is benefit for some to have a digital copy but this isn't necessary at all, so you don't "need" to buy it again.
...would also like to add that I am just getting into it...not yet (and probably wont - other responsibilities take precedence) get into it so far into it that I would sit here all day rewriting stuff just to homebrew it...thanx for trying to assist. Cheers...
Homebrewing is only character options and only those you would need. Most of the LMoP character options are included in the free basic rules. You'd only need to homebrew the specific thing you need if not already included free and only if you actually use it. While the homebrewer is a bit clunky, it's not that difficult really, and would take less than an hour at absolute most - less in most cases. If you can't be bothered, you can buy specific individual things if needed for like $1.99.
So, again, you don't need to buy the same thing twice, at all.

Mainly argument to that is if you're using a character build and you have a physical book in front of you you know that you can do a certain things if you don't buy the Book from D&D beyond then they won't show you those options
Your arguments are invalid because you can enter all content from your physical books into the Homebrew tool.
That's not strictly true. While it is possible to add the vast majority of the content through the homebrew tools - and therefore mostly true - some things are still not possible. Off the top of my head I know that the Kensei Monk cannot be replicated in homebrew without directly copying it - which requires owning it. The Artificer class is another - since it's a main-class and not a sub-class - it cannot be homebrewed. I'm sure there are more.
Every point in this thread has validity. I totally agree that the people at dnd beyond have created something amazing and offer cheaper digital copies of books.
BUT
Several books I bought BEFORE dnd beyond launched, or before I even "bought in" to the whole dnd beyond experience.
So, yeah it sucks that some books cant be transferred, as I would like to use dnd beyond and those books without having to juggle the two, but that does not make dnd beyond any less awesome.
If you have feedback on how you feel we can improve, we'll gladly listen - we always wish to improve!
let ppl, who bought physical books add that content to their dndb compendium. Simple. U want ppl to buy the same thing twice? Thats not pro-consumer. U offer things on-line, that books dont and u wanna fee for that? U already offer subscription service and free, basic content - u already take money for no goods and already offer free service.

Do you buy bread from one bakery, then go into a different bakery and say "already bought bread from someplace else so give me a loaf free?"
D&D is made by Wizards of the Coast.
D&D beyond is owned and run by Fandom, an entirely separate company. If they gave you things for free - they go bankrupt.

Breads a consumable. A book isnt - argument form analogy fallacy.
How convenient u omitted the part, where they aready provide services for free. Have they gone bankrupt yet?
Are you for real?
Bread, book, whatever, same basic thing. Lets swap for something different thee. If you bought a teddy bear from one toystore do you expect to go into a different store and expect them to give another one for free?
If you got a book from the airport shop after a travel, do you then go into your local barns and noble and expect a second copy free?
If you bought a washing machine from an appliance store and go into another one, do you expect a second washing machine for free?
Etc.
Etc.
Does this point sink in yet?
D&D Beyond is not WotC, and they are not whatever other store you got your physical copy from, as it shows ON EVERY PAGE OF THE SITE, so this means they have paid money to license out the books for digital versions made available to you. They also have the costs for the site, hosting, devs, and many other things. So, when you buy books they need to charge you.
Why do you expect them to give stuff, that they must pay for, to you for free? Why? Seriously, why? I just cannot fathom this mindset at all.
And I omitted nothing. They offer some services for free. Not everything and not the books we're actually discussing.

its not the same thing, if 1 is consumable and the other isnt. Its still not the same thing anyway - buying a teddybear in 1 shop doesnt entitle u to another teddybear - it entitles u to having a teddybear. U ppl noticed yourselves - curse isnt providing u with the book contents - its a reseller, slapping some digital service on top of that. Nobody wants the book again - they want the digital functionality and thats not offered separately from the books. Its not their book to offer, so its not their loss to extend the capability to the book u own, especially since u can provide proof of ownership. Curse already gives users ability to play with basic rules for free and owners of the physical media can pull them up and write the contents down into the portal. All dndb does is inconvenience. And its still anti-consumer.

This site isn't owned or operated by Curse.
It has to PAY to provide you the digital version of the book. It's called licensing. They cannot provide you a digital version of the book contents without paying WotC. So if you want a digital version, they have to pay - but you're expecting it for free. Why do you expect them to just pay out and get nothing back from you?
Proof of ownership isn't going to matter. Mostly because even with a physical book you "own" the physical paper and such, you don't own "the content" - that still remains the copyrighted intellectual property of WotC. Also because you didn't buy it from D&D Beyond.
You don't seem to understand how commerce, copyright or licensing work.
