This purchase unlocks the entire contents of the book version for use with D&D Beyond, including the book in digital format in the game compendium and access to all the content’s options in the searchable listings, character builder, and digital sheet.
What I don't quite understand is this:
including the book in digital format in the game compendium
That's the actual part which I'm trying to get it. Will the book only be available in the same format as, for example, the "basic rules" SRD? Or do we also get a REAL digital format as well, like the PDF version of the book?
I feel PHB it's way overpriced ($29.99, same price as Hardcover in Amazon, if you disconsider the initial release $10 discount) if there's no digital PDF included and it's only way of consulting it is through the website.
I totally hope this website to be up at all times and for a loooong time (btw, I liked the UI and the UX. CharBuilder needs improvement but overall, great job!) but I kinda feel resistant due to the fact WotC already dropped this kind of project before (Dungeonscape). Not only that but licensed content normally have a timeframe in the contract, and WotC might not want to renew, who knows.
If that would happen, I'd lose the invested money since it's not like I can convert that into a hardcover book (lol). But if a PDF was provided, would be at least worthy as I would have something in case the website dies.
No pdf is provided and there is no planned pdf inclusion to the digital material. Purchasing the PHB will unlock all content in the character builder (and the other DDB tools) from the PHB and will allow you to view the PHB much like the Basic Rules in the compendium is viewed now.
Also to add to Subs comments - there is an Android and iOS app in development that will allow offline access to content. More details will be provided by staff in the near future.

Cool, thanks for answering.
Is it possible to disclose until which year the current content licencing expires? I know you can renew but just to give a rough idea of "years for sure" I'll have the content :D

Oh awesome! I'm totally in favour of that. Though the website is already responsive, having an app which saves the content for offline use will be great!
If you need ideas, there's one app called "Fight Club 5" (I think it's iOS only) which does a pretty good job with it's UX as character sheet. It's the one I currently use, though has some issues.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I have a quick follow-up: does this mean the entire contents of the PHB would be available digitally in the compendium? How does that work for adventures? What about things like interior art (for which I am a sucker)?
Hello :)
Just a quick clarification needed for Marketplace purchases. Taking PHB as an example (https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/source/2):
