I've been waiting for an update to fix this but it's been two updates now and the app is still as unusable as day 1.
I cannot download any content, because as soon as the download finishes, the app either crashes or it pops up with a confirmation to authorize twitch again. I've clicked authorize a dozen times now but every time it just restarts the app and my data is downloaded but cannot be read. I get an error loading compendium source.
I wish I could help, I'm on an Samsung J7 2016 with version 7.1.1 and it works just fine for me. It may be the software version is to old and incompatible..
I'm sorry to hear that you're unable to run the D&D Beyond app, but reporting information like this to the D&D Beyond team is really handy and part of the reason to have an alpha test.
There is no reasonable way that the Curse team could test every phone model and various different versions of each OS in their office.
Please be assured that the team are working on resolving all of these issues and improving the app.
Yeah, that is why I tried to include all of the information that I could think of. Let me know if there is anything else I can add. I have tried numerous times now, since the start of the Alpha late in December, so it is not like I just tried once and it didn't work. I just hope that they can figure out what is causing the crashes during the Alpha period.
I am having a similar problem on the Samsung A7 Tablet running Android 5.1.1
It successfully loaded and I was able to download each book, but even while connected to internet when opening a book I receive the following message: "Error There was an error loading the compendium source. Try again with an active internet connection or contact support if the problem persists."
Each time I load the app it must download a file named "manifest.json" before it will pass the D&D Beyond loading screen. Attempting to load without an internet connection, it will remain on the loading screen.
The app is working as great as expected on my Google Pixel running Android 8.1.0! I've only noticed a couple minor issues with the working app: Tomb of Annihilation DM & Player Map links loading cover art. I could not back out of the Monster Manual Tarrasque page until I restarted the app.
I think I found the solution to my issue. I am accessing the app from work, which has Twitch (and subsequently D&D Beyond) blocked.
When I disconnect my phone from my work's wifi, the app launches successfully.
I think this is due to the manifest.json file that automatically downloads when the app is launched being blocked. On my phone's data network, there are no issues.
Does this mean that the manifest.json file is required to download to launch the application? And if so, does this mean that the app does not truly work offline yet?
Will the mobile app go into Beta testing after Alpha? Will we get invited to that also? Or will it skip straight to release?
I do try from time to time, to see if the app is now working, but I have had no luck yet on my Android phone. When should we try again? After an update perhaps, or when Beta testing begins?

The app will try to download the json file whenever I am connected to the internet, but if I put my phone in airplane mode it doesn't seem to try to grab the json file and actually loads up faster than when I am connected. From all of my experiences on android or ios this app is able to work offline no problem.
My app completely crashes after flashing an "unexpected error" about 50 times when I try to open the HotDQ adventure. Loading the rule books works fine

The same happens to me, also tested for RoT and LMoP, on both the same. Downloaded a new source book and it worked normally.

From the outside looking in, this sounds to me like the app is probably looking for "updates" when launching if there is an internet connection available. These "updates" wouldn't necessarily be app updates but could be checking your account for things like password change, new purchases, new content available, content sharing (even though that's not enabled yet), etc. If you're offline, it can't and therefore doesn't check for these "updates" and just launches, however if you have an Internet connection it tries. Ultimately this points out an issue on their end though in your case, if your current network is blocking the site where the "updates" come from (Twitch, DNDBeyond, etc.) the app should just launch without grabbing the file instead of erroring out because the site is blocked.

Well, this doesn't seem to be caused by a system version that is not up-to-date. It's more like a problem caused by a system version update and an application version not being updated. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app? When I encountered this problem before, I solved it by this method.

I have the same issues. I have a Hisense Infinity KO (C20) with Android version 5.1.1.

I'm pretty sure they will figure it - there are some really talented people on the team. :)

It's working on my Galaxy Note 4 but crashes on my Kindle Fire 10 HD whenever I finish downloading content, which is never able to open afterward.
Index Links From My Galaxy Note 4 opens up my browser and fails to load a website. I have to manually scroll to the desired page each time.
Yesterday, I was able to resolve all issues and it was working normally.
As of today, it crashes as soon as I try to launch it. No error prompts, it just closes immediately.

That makes sense. Hopefully they get it worked out.
may be you should try to install app from source out of Google Play like apkpure, apkmirror, apknite
