I am guessing the forum software is an off-the-shelf solution, but it would be nice if there was an automated popup when users try to post on a thread with a most recent post older than 6 months or so. Something like "This thread was last updated over 6 months ago. Does your post contain new information? Y/N"

Looking to add mouse-over triggered tooltips to such things like magic items, monsters or combat actions? Then dash over to the How to Add Tooltips thread.
I would prefer it if new accounts and accounts with low post counts simply are not allowed to post on old threads, since those seem to be the most likely to necro and most likely to not contribute to the discussion.

Unfortunately there isn't any option for this within the forums backend.

This would be problematic because we sometimes have new users making valid contributions to inactive threads, such as feature request threads or bug threads. Just because someone is new to the forums, that doesn't implicitly means their contributions have less value.
Even limited to General Discussion only I think would help greatly. An automated block of "Your first post can't be in General Discussion on a thread with a most recent post greater than 6 months old" would solve 50+%
Often people will want to discuss new info (such as a new book or something), so they find an existing thread that talks about the topic and continue that conversation. They then get chastised for necroing an old thread. Yet if they make a new thread, people will chastise them for creating a thread that already exists.

That would also be a good solution (and probably easier to implement)
