DDB is not the same company as WotC, so no one is 'double dipping' anyone.
This is no different than roll20 or fantasy grounds, or even two different bookstores. Buying a book from merchant A does not give you an entitlement to access the content from merchant B.
That's ignoring the fact there is zero practical/viable way to validate your purchase; your book doesn't have a unique identifier. They can do it with sealed products like the essentials kit, where a unique code card can be inserted into the product and secured, but it's not possible with the book you already own.
Also, you need to pay for the work done to design and implement all the tools, index the books, and incorporate them into the character builder, character sheet, encounter builder etc.
And if that still doesn't seem worth it for you, you can enter the content in yourself for free using the homebrew tools, then it'll just cost you your time.
If I buy a book from merchant A, I don't even need to go to Merchant B because I already have the book from Merchant A. I'd be happy to pay for the digital tools but just give me a flat fee to pay without signing up for a stupid sub or paying for content that I already own.
I still have the receipts goddamnit.
You're paying for the work done to include all the content. You can freely use the tools. If you don't want to pay for the time that was saved of you, you can use the homebrew system to enter all the content you own by yourself.
I am happy to pay for the tools and the systems. I will not pay for content I already have. If they gave me a flat fee to pay for the app and added the ability to create characters in the Canadian app I would buy it. I never said I wouldn't pay for it I'm just saying I will not buy things I already own. This is pointless. I'm just going to stick with pen and paper.

I don't think you read what you're quoting because they told you that you could use the tools for free. all you need to do is manually input anything that isn't in the starter kit rules via the homebrew system.

The app is a different deal currently.
As it still considered in Alpha stage, it only contains the compendium and the detail pages.
There will be updates to add the character sheet Soon(tm) and then, Later(tm), the Homebrew.

I read. Why would I do that myself when it is far easier to use pen and paper. I already have all the books I want to play with. Are you even sure that what you guys are suggesting isn't just copyright infringement?

You are welcome to use your physical books as guides for entering your content on D&D Beyond using the homebrew system for your private use! You just cannot publish content that you did not originally create.
honestly I would just like to be able to put the homebrew city that my father, my brother, and I created on here since dad passed away I just kind of wanted to share it. we designed it from the ground up while I was going through chemo, it was something we could do cause I couldn't go outside and we wanted to play together. And with him gone I just wanted to share it.
I have a new idea and its basicly away for DM's to find players, or players to find groups or games to play in. I am mean the site as alot of the base stuff need for it and its basicly be like a form board or something like, and it would make life easeir for DM and Players to find eachother. its just a thought, but it would awsome.
Are there any future plans for the campaign tools? It's nice to have the notes section but nicer if it were possible to add sections or folders to organize a campaign or even upload txt/rtf files to read when needed. Something like onenote, basically (not even sure that's possible but it can't hurt to ask).
I love that I can finally filter my source books within the campaign. Thanks a bunch for that one!
Would it be possible to add an "Attunement Class" option to the magic items search? As it stands I can't see way to, for example, search for magic items specific to Warlocks.
This would be very helpful when looking for magic items to put into homebrews.
I hope this mega-thread is the right place to make suggestions for features. If not, please tell me and advise me where to post and I will post it there instead.
I want to suggest that we get the option to share our full character sets, with all the notes and backstory and everything. I have just shared a character to Twitter, and there is not enough room in the Tweet to post notes or backstory, which means Twitter users can't get the full feel for my character. They are getting the figures but none of the flavourings.
I am just saying Twitter because that is what I use but sharing on other social media. Even DDB forums would see improvement by allowing us to share our entire character sheet. I realise people will probably say that they don't want their full backstories ad things revealed to all players in their campaign. A way to solve this is for players to only put a summary of their backstory on the character sheet. Keeping the rest in a private shared document only shared with you and your DM.
In fact, that is arguably the right way to do it anyway.
So, can we please get the ability to share full character sheets, either by default or by option?

Something that I would love is an option within the lists (Classes, Races, Magic Items, etc) to have an option for "My Purchased Products". I do not have everything, namely some of the larger books like Xanathar's so I have to filter to every book I DO own just to see what I am able to actually see. Would be useful, especially for that user that has a spread of different content.
Goods and services page needed. Stop dividing up magic items from equipment
I don't understand the separation between goods such as Magic items and equipment under the game rules tab. I think It should be like the spells page(easily searchable and can be filtered) but call the page goods and services. This new page should not only include all the magical items and standard goods but should include things like buying a farm/ villa, renting or buying a gally and all the other services available from the books. It should be easier to find items and in turn, look at them to price out similar items. It would be good if players could also add their own homebrewed items or services just like they can do with spells, monsters, magic items, feats.... but first make it easier to find what I am looking for.
D&D beyond is one of the most heavily accesses resources during most of the Adventurers League games I have played or DM'd. Have you thought about adding a AL legal toggle on the character creation page? It might be helpful for new players who don't quite understand (or haven't read) the racial regulations in AL.
Thanks for your time. This site is amazingly helpful.

Hello there Ianth421,
AL validation is a planned feature. There is no timeline/ETA for this feature, because DDB do not give those. You can see what is currently being worked on, what is going to be worked on, and longer-term goals here.
Hopefully this is the right place to put it, and I couldn't find any similar requests in the search function. But would it be possible to just get a random homebrew item/monster? Like, instead of having to search for a monster or dig through page after page, maybe just press a button and get a random one. If you want to make it even better, maybe allow you to sort random choices by CR for monsters so it'll only dig through the 1s or 2s if that's all someone needs.
I have tried to create my own home brew class. Its based on a cross between a Wizard and Sorcerer, so i used the Wizard class to base it on when creating it. However i cant get rid of the Base class benefits - such as spell mastery for example.
Would be great to be able to add / remove / customise them when making a homebrew class.
Also in trying to add spells in Spell Mastery (in my home brew class i get a 1st ad 2nd level spell but at lvl20) i dont seem to have ability to pick from all of my 1st and 2nd level spells..****y a choice of about 5 spells....specifically want to be able to add my homebrew spells....

Homebrew full classes is on the roadmap.
See the community summary document for all we currently know.
I'm not sure if this is the place and I know it's a niche type of user that would look for it, but could we get different tabs for organizing characters in use, characters made for a campaign, characters made for future use. And brainstorming characters? Or could we just get the feature to move characters up and down in the "My Characters" List
Thanks for the reply, can you also advise around the (bug?) issue around spell mastery - not being able to pick from all spells in spell book (homebrew spells included) ?
