im a lvl 20 rogue , with some friends to help out, and I wanna do an athletics roll.
20 ( crit ) + 6 ( proficiency ) x 2 ( expertise from rogue) + 9 ( belt of giant strength ) +4 ( bless ) + 12 ( bardic inspiration) = 57
But is it possible to get that? Did I do a mistake, or did I miss an ability / spell that might help? I’m pretty sure I missed a couple of spells, so feel free to list all the crazy spells from all sources you have that might help. ( note that I only took athletics for the belt of giant strength, so maybe Vedalken can have a big impact if we go with history or something )
Plenty of stuff you can add, but most relies on other people.
First, you want Guidance, not Bless. Bless doesn't affect ability checks. Beyond that, Peace Cleric and Wild Magic Sorcerer can add another d4 each, while Star Druid can add another d6. Artificers can add an extra +5 thanks to Flash of Genius.
If you go for a different skill, like stealth, you can get additional flat bonuses from things like Pass Without Trace.
I'm sure there are a couple other subclasses or magic items that could contribute.
Yeah, that’s right, you can also add in some guidance for 4 more, an Ioun Stone of Mastery for +2, the new Reborn’s extra d6, then Divine Soul Sorcerer and Fiend Warlock for an extra 2d4+1d10 (because your 69 just failed to open the DC 70 arcane locked Cloud Giant’s door) for a total of 87. I also probably missed some stuff, but hey, you have 13 more levels of classes to figure out buffs after your Divine Sorcerer 1/Fiend Warlock 6/Something Else X with the Skill Expert feat and some friends gets that 87 on your Athletics check!
Edit 1: Bless doesn’t affect Ability Checks.
Edit 2: Here’s everything I can get, spelled out.
(20) Roll a 20
(34) Expertise with Ioun Stone of Mastery
(35) Luckstone
(45) Max Strength due to manuals
(49) Guidance
(61) Friendly Bard giving some inspiration
(67) Reborn adding a d6
(73) Lost Crown of Besilmer extra d6
(83) Dark One’s Own Luck extra 1d10
Oops, you failed the arbitrarily high check! That’s not good! Good thing we have some help!
(87) Pact of the Talisman d4
(95) Favored by the Gods from Sorcerer
(105) Due to +10 Intelligence Flash of Genius
That is the best I could do, with a Reborn Divine Soul Sorcerer 1/Fiend Warlock 6 (Talisman)/Any Artificer 7/Anything 6 making an Athletics Check against a DC 1,000,000 grapple check.
Edit 3: Just found this on RPG Stack Exchange while checking my work. They get a much higher result with a Stealth Check (which I really should have thought of, or at least a Persuasion check, which in retrospect I know I could get about 10 or 20 points higher). The only thing they could improve on I think is using a Reborn from the (very recent) new book to increase the total by a whopping 1 point.
Edit 4: Aha! With an Expert Sidekick granting some Help action, I can increase the total by a further 2d6, bringing my total improvement to a +13 bonus compared to them, for a max of 188!
The maximum possible is interesting in some ways, but you should also look at the minimum. In your version (with bless swapped to guidance) that would be 33, which is an autowin against almost every WoTC monster.
You don't need to be a rogue for Expertise if you take the Skill Expert feat from Tasha's. I recommend being a Dhampir Kensei on top of all of this, as I laid out in this post why.
That’s a good analysis! I THINK I just barely have you beat due to sheer extra dice, but I’m tired and don’t want to do any more math. Maybe you could merge them together and see if we can improve Stack Exchange’s max even more?
Swap Rogue for Lore Bard, you’ll still get expertise but then you’ll be able to effectively Inspire yourself at 14th level with Peerless Skill and then you can grab find familiar with Magical Secrets so it can help you. If you’re allowed to take it the (now archived) Wild Talent (UA) feat with Strength as your ability would also help.
Hear me out.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
