Are there alternatives to the spell disguise self?
My DM recently allowed me to play a Drow. In the settings (and most of the lore) drow are evil and the enemy. I'm not totally trying to play a Drizzit (although its fairly close) character but I was looking for possible options to disguise myself that i can work out with my DM. Perhaps a magical amulet or a cloak...
Class is Ranger Gloom Stalker so I do have the spell but it only Lasts for an hour :(
Just thought id poke the forums to see what ideas folks might have.
Yeah, Emmber and MamasToast already said the two things that immediately came to my mind. The hat (or another wearable magic item with the same effect if you want to mix it up for flavor) will put an illusion on you to make you look like whoever/however you want within limitations of the spell. A disguise kit would be simpler to just change your skin color with some makeup so you can pass for a surface elf; just make up a fake backstory that sounds bland and typical enough to not invite deeper questioning and be careful about getting wet and your makeup washing off.
Disguise kit may be the best option for a long term disguise. No one hour time limit or spell slot limit. Won't be picked up by detect magic/truesight/dispel magic etc.
It is interesting to note that the only sub-race of Elves that gets the spell Disguise Self is the Mark Of Shadow Elf from Eberron. Neither Drow nor Rangers get the spell Disguise Self and that spell can only be cast upon yourself. The spell is only available to Bards, Sorcerers, Wizards, Artificers, and Clerics of the Trickery Domain. Emmer is technically correct, but having the hat cast the spell for you doesn't fulfill the criteria, since what it does is cast the spell for you. If you really want an alternative to the spell Disguise Self, you'll need makeup.
Since drow are a unique color and their hair is also unique, the easiest answer might be dying the hair, wearing gloves, and maybe a hood or mask? You don't wanna spend 3 hours in make up every morning applying full body paint. sometimes simple solutions are best. Good luck.
hmm mask might be a good idea. I already told the DM i plan to always wear gloves long sleves and a very deep hooded cloak to cover my hair/face. He agree'd that its not a problem.
Makeup is would be a challenge Best way might be just a mask with a backstory that i was "burned" as a child or something hence the mask.."
Beniago of House Baenre, usually doing business at Beniago Kurth, has a magic earring that has allowed him to run a powerful ship faction in Luskan, in the guise of a red headed human (who claims half ancestry because the disguise doesn't age).
The "how" isn't really a hard question, magic all times hands down unless you want your guise to be subject to perception check beating your disguise. The real question is, should your DM just grant you the ability to "pass" as a not Drow or should such a magical mechanism be hard earned.

If you wear full body clothing, including a balaclava, all anyone will be able to see are your eyes and possibly the bridge of your nose, which can go a long way.
5E has glassblowing, which presumably means it has colored glass. The exact mechanics are up to your DM, but the point is, you should be able to get your hands on sunglasses, perhaps in goggle form.
One of the disadvantages of playing a Drow is that they have a bad reputation and are almost never fully trusted. There really isn't any way to fix that, and the harder you try, the worse you get unless you use magic. Wearing an unusual costume is apt to draw attention. People wonder "Why would you need one?" Even when the weather requires special gear, people are apt to want to know why you're out and about in it. You are sensitive to the bright light of the day, people are apt to wonder why anyone would be out at night without a light, and a light is apt to call attention to yourself. In a fantasy world, the dark of night is a very dangerous thing to be out in. There are fairly deadly things that travel around in the night, like, for example, Dark Elves.
The question was asked how to play a Drow Gloomstalker Ranger (it's a very cool concept) and change your appearance without magic. I don't see any way that you could without some degree of risk.

That earring is functionally equivalent to the hat of disguise in practice, being a magical item that provides a sustained illusion.

But pirates, because Luskan. There are other functionalities to consider besides enchantment. Don't brave the wild seas in a hat!

proficiency in the disguise kit and then make yourself out to be another kind of elf?

I am rather fond of a two level dip into Warlock to pick up Mask of Many Faces and then the Actor feat with an ASI. Now you can be...anyone.....
