Is it possible to have a character unassigned from the original player and picked up by another player and then unassigned/given back to the original player.
This comes up when a player can't make a session and one of the other players wants to control their character for the session.
We use Roll20 for the vtt and D&D Beyond for the character sheets.
It is possible for the owning player to unassign the character and someone else claim it. It can't be done by anyone other than the currently owning player though
I'm retired with no schedule limitations. I'm an experienced player, but I'm still learning 5e Looking for a group that has a healthy mix of hack and slash and Roleplaying. enough RP to make it fun and different from MMORPGs and enough hacking and slashing to so I don't feel like a bought a bunch of dice just to have them collect dust.
You don't need to do the assign/unassign thing. Players can go to the Campaign page and view the other character sheets. Some details are omitted but you can access basic stuff like attacks, spells, and skills to make rolls. In roll20, you just need to make sure the player can control the token and you're good to go.
I do this all the time. I have a subscription and can have an unlimited number of characters but my students all have free accounts and can only have 6. When they need room to create a new character I have them unassign a character they have in the campaign and I claim it until they want to use it again. When they want their sheet back I just unassign it and they can claim it right back.

I know you can do it in FGU. But those characters were imported into FGU. Sorry, that doesn't help much in your case.
I did see this post that might offer you a solution.

Thanks all,
There appears to be a Share Link in the manage character area. I'll test it out later to see how it all works.
