Honestly, I'd like some playable elementals. Maybe a bit niche, but an intelligent being of living water/fire/air/lightning/stone/smoke would be pretty awesome from an RP and worldbuilding standpoint.
Isn't that just the Genasi?
Genasi is pretty committed to the whole "they're just regular people" thing. I imagine a properly realized elemental race would have significant trouble integrating into a "standard" setting. The fire ones can't enter flammable huts or wear clothes, etc.
For me, I think it's about time we get an awakened animal race. I know, a dog can't draw a bow, I get it, and I know, nobody wants to see a cute kitty get torn apart by a dragon, but let's be realistic -- hardly anybody dies in modern D&D play, and people want to play as pets. I'm not talking about anthro stuff like Tabaxi. I wouldn't even use this race in my own games, probably, but I feel like it's a huge obvious missing piece.
Edit: I missed the prompt! I want to play as a modron.
Newest question: If you couldn’t play D&D anymore, what would you do instead and why?
My ex-wife forbade me from playing D&D for years. My late husband wasn't the type to be interested. I wrote a half a dozen crappy novels, read way more books than I had since high school, and watched every single fantasy or sci-fi show that even vaguely caught my interest.
Then I and my original crew reconnected, and we got to reminiscing and bam, we started playing again and since I had a decent job I picked up the new books and we've been going at it ever since.
At this point, I would simply make my own version of the game, but presuming you mean even that is forbidden, probably just start releasing travelogues of moving through fantastic world, akin to Swift's Gulliver. Or *shudders*...
... I would be writing more white papers for the UN.

Probably do more writing and other creative work that is fantasy adjacent, and more than likely get into more traditional board games with fantasy elements.

White papers? So you work for the UN? That sounds cool.
Yeah, I went and signed back up for more hell of diplomats and bureaucrats because the money is hard to say no to when my company is being merged with another, lol.
Did it from 04 to 13, and before that from 95 to 02 on a specific project around balkanization. My specific focus by training is predictive modeling of psychosocial systems, so I do a lot of human rights and health equity stuff. Excessively boring, lol. I much prefer my "day job" of putting policy into practice and infrastructure development.
I do get free trains to New York now and again (I don't fly because sexual harassment is annoying). The big problem is no health insurance for contract work. meh. It's a living (tic toc tic toc)

Cry. So much crying.
I'd probably spend my time writing (I have several novels I am working on - that have admittedly gone on the backburner, in favor of DMing). I'd probably also turn my current D&D world into a novel - or smash it together to try and sell it online as a form of an existing/established D&D world.
Also probably focus on my Let's Play Sierra Games Youtune Channel. I don't have a lot of followers or whatever - I do it because I've always been passionate about Sierra games (King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Police Quest, Space Quest, Gabriel Knight, Phantasmagoria, etc etc).

OK wait, those of you that answered already, SERIOUSLY?! If you couldn't play D&D you would just give up do some lame shit instead?!
You wouldn't play something else? Shadowrun?? Fantasy HERO?? Cthulhu?? (just to name a few) Really? REEALLY?!
No way, I gave up D&D once, and right now you can have my dice when you pull them out of my cold dead fingers.
I am assuming they mention D&D (because it's D&D here, but encompassed all Table Top Games). If that's not the case, I'd probably play Star Wars RPG (the old school one) or break out my Star Frontiers again. (I really enjoyed that setting for some reason! Glad to see they've included the races - in a round about way - now been included in 5e).

I would probably spend more time writing stories instead of converting story ideas that I have into Dnd. I wouldn't stop working with fantasy, I use Dnd to come up with story ideas, play them out, and see other people's cool ideas. I don't know many other similar game systems, but I do have a few friends who play pathfinder, so I might see what that is like.

Well, yeah, lol.
I mean, I was cut off from all magical stuff. It was horrible. She even threw out several very expensive and rare books I had from the 1700’s. There are reasons she is my ex, lol.
I have done enough game design stuff that I could just go forward with my own game (and have come close more than a few times the last four years), but I presumed it was meant as all ttrpg.
Heck, I would whip out my old MSHAS adaptations. But I would continue to develop this setting and world — too much effort in it to stop now.

GURPs, Pathfinder, or the game Mark "Sherlock" Hulmes is working on.
I also wouldn't mind finding a game that's Project Black Flag an exact copy of the SRD with just a few tweaks and modifications. It technically isn't D&D!

The second TTRPG I will try if I cannot do D&D anymore would be Grancrest RPG. I saw the anime and I really liked it, and I am interested in trying the system out since they have mass combat. It is very class based though, so I am probably not going to stick with it. After that, I might try GURPS, Savage Worlds, or Fate since they seem to be classless.
If TTRPGs are off the table, then I guess I would spend more on boardgames and videogames. I would try out The Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms, since I like Skyrim and it looks really cool. I also really, really, really want to try Kingdom Death: Monster, as the monster models look ******* badass as all hell, but I am not sure I am willing to pay that price tag for just the base game. As for videogames, I am just waiting for Sons of the Forest to play with my friends, and other than that, we will mostly stick with zombie shooters and also try out Dead by Daylight.

Also, writing isn't lame to some of us...I can imagine a world in which I don't play D&D, but I cannot fathom a world in which I can't write. Diff'rent strokes, I guess.
