In the standard rulebook, "Magic Initiate: Wizard" is a feat. This grants two additional cantrips and an extra Spell slot for use once every Long Rest.
That feat is in the PHB, which is the standard rulebook that is available for purchase, absolutely correct. However, it is not in the free version of the rulebook. Everyone has access to the materials contained within the free to all Basic Rules & SRD, so that’s the stuff that’s available for free to all here on DDB. If anyone wants the additional materials contained within the PHB, then just like anywhere else it must be purchased here to use those materials on this site.
I am so used to having almost everything available to my group.
Lemme guess, you didn’t buy it from their site, it’s being shared with you by someone you are in a campaign with. Right?
If I am correct, then I hate to break it to ya, but the book isn’t being shared “with you” at all. It’s being shared with that campaign. Which means you can only use it on characters in that specific campaign.
Fortunately the Magic Initiate feat is fairly simple to homebrew.
There's also weekly content sharing threads on r/dndnext on reddit where people will post links to campaigns for others to join where they have campaigns with content sharing.

And the problem is????
In fact I did buy the three core books from here. Along with the hard cover versions. The group I joined purchased almost everything else over the last ten years including the real life books.

How are you trying to do it?
Through the character builder or the character sheet?
The character builder on here!
What race and level.
You can not get a feat until you are high enough level. Normally third, first for the variant human.
And you do not get an extra spell slot but instead you just get to cast the first level spell you chose once per long rest.
When you are allowed to gain the feat you should be able to choose the spell from a drop down list at that same time.
Make sure to reload the pages after your finished making changes.
Do you own the book? In dndbeyond, not hard copy.

Also check that you don't already have the feat, because you can't take it twice.
I am not the original poster.
That’s what I get for posting when I’m half asleep. That changes the context. Other than the OP, who said there was a problem?
