So my player owns more books than I do. (I only just made my account a couple of weeks ago) He cannot join my campaign because he is using a character that has a domain from a paid for book. Does this mean I have to pay for the book as well for him to join my campaign? If so, this seems pretty predatory.
If this is the case, it is not the norm and is either a bug or, more often the case, user error. I have joined free-player campaigns in the past and I have just about every book available on this site.
The fact that they own more books on this site than you should have absolutely no bearing on whether or not they can join your campaign. What gives you the impression that is the reason they cannot join? All you and they need for them to join your campaign is as follows:
You must create a campaign here on DDB.
You must send that player the “join” link found at the top of your campaign’s page.
They must use that link and choose to either-
Create a new character in your campaign
Claim (take possession of) an unassigned character you have created in that campaign
Chose a character they have previously created and join with that character
That’s it. There are only a handful of things that could prevent their joining, and none of them require you as the DM to purchase anything, and might only require that player to purchase a membership if they have already hit their maximum allowed number of characters (either 5 or 6 I think without a subscription, or unlimited with any subscription). Those things that might prevent their joining are as follows:
The join link you sent is incorrect for some reason. Maybe you (perhaps accidentally) reset the link after sending it to them rendering the one you sent invalid, or maybe it picked up some errant code during a copy/paste. Stuff like that happens. Try resending the link, and if you copy/paste it and see the following at the very end of the link after pasting, delete these characters before sending: “ ” that little bit of code you see between the quotation marks can happen when the link is pasted and will cause it to fail, so make sure it’s not there.
There are already the maximum allowable number of “players” (12) in the campaign. Unassigned characters each count as 1 player. If that’s the case then simply either claim, delete, or remove one of those unassigned characters to free up a slot.
The character they are trying to join with is already in another campaign. In that case they must first remove that character from its current campaign before joining your campaign with that character.
There is a glitch in the system. Everyone should log out and back in, wait 20 minutes and then try it again.
One of you (probably them) is running an ad/popup blocker, browser extension, or a VPN that might be interfering with DDB. Tell them to turn all of those off or try again.

Thank you for this information. What he is saying is, since he made a character with the Forge Domain, and that domain is from a paid for book, he cannot join my free campaign with that character. Now that I know this is false, I will help him a little more directly to join next time I see him.
"You don't have access to the forge domain cleric so I cannot build this character in your campaign, nor can I add my current one to it. If you don't have the book source I cannot bring that character into the game"
"You don't have access to the forge domain cleric so I cannot build this character in your campaign, nor can I add my current one to it. If you don't have the book source I cannot bring that character into the game"
This is what he's saying.
It is not correct.
Send him the link and as long as his cleric is not already in a campaign, he can join your campaign with it.
Strictly speaking, he can join with a character he has built using content you don’t own if he has access to it from some other source but he won’t be able to add any levels of forge cleric (or use any other content you don’t own) going forward. It sounds like he access to it from another source. Can he share that access with your campaign? If not, someone in your campaign has to purchase and share the content he wants to use. Or I suppose he could hop between where he has access to forge cleric and your campaign when it comes time to level but that seems a bit of a nuisance. He could always just pick a different domain from the content he can easily access for this game and play the forge cleric later on.
It’s not like there is a bug or error or anything broken here—someone in your campaign needs to own and be able to share the content you want use in your campaign because capitalism *shrug*
If no one owns it but he has access to it enough to read it, he can also just make a homebrew copy -- use another 2014 cleric as a template, then replace each subdomain feature with the relevant one from the template, so that you're sure to have the features at the correct levels.

Just to correct this: Even if he no longer has access to the subclass, eg if he built it using content sharing in a different campaign, he will continue to be able to progress the character. So, if he's using a Forge Cleric, he'll still be able to add levels and progress the character even he no longer has access to XGtE. What he can't do is add a new option. So if he removed the Forge subclass for any reason, he wouldn't be able to then re-add the subclass back in.
However, normally, he'll be able to continue increasing the characters level (including as a Forge Cleric) even if he no longer has access to the source book. The only potential issue is spells and other add-ons.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

Interesting. I seem to recall some related nuisance the one time I ran into this situation in the past. I just changed my subclass quite quickly. Maybe I didn’t need to heh. Thanks for the correction. Seems like there should be no issue at all here, nor any need for home brewing.

Your friend is incorrect. He has that domain, so he can use it in any campaign, and he can join any campaign with that character whether he actually had that domain or not since it’s already on the character and he has control of it.

That is incorrect. Once that subclass is on that character sheet it will continue to gain levels normally regardless of anything else.

Definitely agree, that shouldn't be the case.
