so iv'e just started playing a kensei monk and plan on taking sentinel and polearm master to kind of play the tank of our group at least in terms of keeping people off of our casters.
i was wondering what would be a worthy multi class to aid me in this type of build (iv'e never multi classed before).
If you identify as a monk, I do not recommend muticlassing. You're better off just sticking with monk to add more stunning and monk abilities. MOnk is one of the few classes where I feel like a multiclass is just too costly to be the best option.
However, if you're ok feeling less like a monk, you're going to be well served with a battlemaster fighter or a variety of cleric multiclass options.

I also wouldn't be inclined to multiclass - a kensei monk polearm master using a spear is a great defender in the long-term.
However; I would point out that you cannot actually use a polearm with reach as a kensei, so you'll be limited to the spear's 5 ft range on reaction attacks (unlike any other polearm master sentinel class).
You could consider using a whip instead, which gives you 10 ft range in general (though you'll mostly be within 5 ft on your attack actions for unarmed strikes) and access to Defensive Duelist - it's not as good a reaction for intercepting foes, but will make you harder to hit when engaged.

to expand, its because the base monk is only proficient with simple weapons and short swords. Kensai adds martial weapons that do not have the heavy or special properties. This means the only weapon you are proficient with, counts as a monk weapon, and qualifies for polearm master; is spear.
