I feel like a scythe would be unwieldy and slow. But great leverage on a first strike. Though defending with one seems like it would be difficult. I would definitely choose a glance over it. But in the rules it would matter anyways. Is it listed as simple? Simple for scything grain I would say, less so against a human (again first strike notwithstanding).
If it's magic you could make it easier to control, but I don't think it would be much stronger than a sickle.
I'm seeing Death Domain clerics may carry one as a symbol of their office, but if there's "real work" to be done, cast spiritual weapon in scythe form.

That sounds like something that would do its damage by way of people getting so close taking damage from the raw silliness...
Actually the half movement and wisdom check puts reaper scythe spirit guardians in the silly yet legit horror trope of Jason and other stalkers who I'd say have a lineage to the Grim Reaper. I like it.
But yes, scythes I think are consensus agreed to be silly, unless we're talking war scythes which are serious. Since I've taken issue with the simple/martial distinction as too simple, I should embark on a project with a spectrum of weapons from "deadly serious" to "plain silly".

No, that’s what happens when you cast Spirit Guardians as Clowns or Mimes. If you go with nudists the damage type switches to psychic.

i just say its a 1d6 simple weapon. later player can get a vorpal version. they are a kenku way of lonf death monk
Heavy, two handed martial weapon, Reach, 1d8 for the blade and 1d4 for the stick so 1d8 +1d4 + strength modifier
needs proficiency to use.
