I'm new to D&D. I still haven't played my first game. I also want to DM some. Can I DM and play? I haven't seen anything against it, but haven't heard it being done.
DM'ing and playing in the same game? It's often frowned upon - heavily. Typically referred to as a DMPC (Dungeon Master Player Character) - and DM's who play them often fall into the trap of making the game about them and their character - hogging all the attention and loot. It rarely ends well. I would not recommend trying it until you're much more comfortable DM'ing - and I'm sure others will still say don't do it.
But DM'ing one game and playing in another game - of course you can do that - if you have the time to do it.
Just Google DMPCs if you want all the reasons why it's not a great idea for a DM to also play as a PC in the same game.
But aside from that, DMing is a lot of work and requires all your attention. DMing and playing a character at the same time will probably not be fun for a new player. Play some games and DM some games before you think about trying both at the same time.
