On November 15th select Unearthed Arcana content is going to be archived: the Brute, Giant Soul, Archivist, School of Invention & Arcane Weapon. Nothing of yours will be deleted, and any characters with that content will remain usable. However it will no longer be available for new characters, or if you remove the UA content from your existing character.
We wanted to give everyone a heads up and plenty of time to prepare. If you have any questions, or need any help creating homebrew content, our forums are the best place to get help!
Is there any chance of adding all of the subclass UA to the "Select an existing Subclass as a template:" drop-down under the homebrew subclass creation page before these disappear, to make for ease of copying? Arcane Weapon is available in the homebrew spell creation, but none of the subclasses show up. It would make for great ease of personal archival. Thanks! :)
It feels a bit user-hostile that people have to reprogram the subclasses themselves if they want to use them again. Why can't they just be archived *into* the homebrews so they're still available and just don't appear in the official listings?
Can we get a reason why the content is being archived? Is it going to be in an upcoming product? If not, has development stopped on those ideas? Whether or not I want to save it somewhere may depend on the answer.
This is the first time I've noticed this happening (though I suppose it's possible this has happened before). What is the motivation for doing this? Are the subclasses being reprinted in a book available for purchase? Or are they simply being archived due to disuse?
Generally a UA is archived because Wizards of the Coast no longer considers it active (its playtest period is over)
The Brute, Circle of Spores, and School of Invention were released together on January 8, 2018, almost 2 years ago. Circle of Spores was printed in Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica in November 2018. The other two (Brute and Invention) have been deemed in need of further refinement / not in a direction WotC wants to go.
Archivist and Arcane Weapon were in playtest for the upcoming Eberron book, which comes out on the 19th. They either didn't make the cut or will be in the book. Since the other subclasses are not mentioned, I would guess they didn't make the cut.
Giant Soul sorcerer was in June 2018, so over a year ago and well past its playtest period to be in a book.

Hello! Wizards of the Coast has requested that these options be removed from the official digital toolset and the D&D Beyond team is following through on that to keep D&D Beyond up to date.
We are pleased that we are able to ensure that your ongoing characters will remain functional even after the conclusion of the playtest period. If you currently have a Giant Soul Sorcerer, they will not lose their subclass when this change is made.
Little sad that Arcane Weapon seems to be dying. Oh well. Easier to homebrew spells than subclasses anyways. Good riddance to most of that stuff, little surprised things like Brute or School of Invention lasted as long as they did.
couldn't we just create a personal homebrew for it and save it for personal and campaign use only if you like them.
edit OK nope that doesn't work. This seems like such a natural change to allow us to create homebrew based on UA content as long as we don't share it.
You can absolutely create homebrew for personal use, and it can be a recreation of the UA content you would like to keep!
If the issue is that you can't copy existing UA to use as a template, that's correct. You would need to create the content from scratch. I realize that can be time consuming for something as involved as a subclass, which is why it was important to give this heads up as soon as possible.
I just hope that artificers get a replacement to arcane weapon. I have no way of knowing, but is it at all possible that they are asking for it to be removed because either a. artificer is getting a similar spell with some slight mechanical differences or b. they are renaming the spell in the actual book and want the other version to be removed because it is not in the basic rules (i.e. hunters mark)? I am curious to find out, if you are unable to answer I understand.
We're not gonna find out junk like that until they release the book, Bunsen. I'm assuming they canned Arcane Weapon because it was both very strong when applied to other classes and because the Internet rose up and said "ARTIFICERS DON'T NEED TO FIGHT TAKE AWAY THEIR WEAPONS", and Wizards designs by Internet mob now instead of letting game developers develop games.
If wizards listened to the internet for advice only then hexblade wouldn't exist. I refuse to believe that they completely removed the only artificer specific spell from the game because some people complained about it.

My personal guess is that it'll never be printed. Most of these subclasses were pretty poorly regarded: Giant Soul has always caught a lot of hate, and Brute was my personal least favorite UA (we didn't need to make Champions obsolete). If I'm right, I won't be disappointed.

Why you shouldn't start ANOTHER thread about DDB not giving away free redeems on your hardcopy book purchases.
Thinking of starting ANOTHER thread asking why Epic Boons haven't been implemented? Read this first to learn why you shouldn't!

I'm presuming that the Arcanomechanical Armor magic item will be deleted too?

Maybe they made Arcane Weapon a class feature for Artificers. That would be awesome.
Could be its like what they did in the most recent UA with hunters mark. Most likely not though, considering some has leaked already.
so how would i go about saving the archivist?
My Spells, My Races, My Magic Items, My Monsters, My Subclasses,
Apparently that's not possible at all right now, bc you can't choose the Artificer from the menu in the homebrew creation.
