"Probably not good for meat. Looks to be built like a wolf too lean. Maybe able to make some jerky though. But a cloak, I would say you could make something like that from the pelt." Her father responds as the duo bring the beast into the workshop and lock up. They walk back to the house in silence, Vance gives his daughter a kiss on the head and says. "Good night my Korrina." Then makes his way to his bed room and while closing the door lingers just a moment to look onto his daughter.
Korey wakes feeling rested and refreshed, but sore. Her bandaged arm itches, but she knows that is from the healing process. Getting up and dressed, Korey makes her way through to the kitchen. Where she finds a plate for her, some eggs and cured meat, along with a biscuit and some honey. Next to the plate was a note:
Having slept in later than usual, not surprisingly so, Korey rises halfway through the morning. She gingerly pulls herself out of bed and uses the distance from her bedroom to the kitchen to stretch out her aching muscles. Finding the note on the table she smiles, but grimaces a bit at the "little" reference.Never gonna stop not being his little girl , I imagine. Guess that's why I love him so much. She would never admit it openly but she knows she's a "daddy's girl".She sits down and devours the breakfast. She takes some time after finishing her meal to just sitting in the chair, reflecting on the previous night's events. Though she counts herself lucky as somewhat lucky, there's no denying that she enjoyed the hunt - the excitement of tracking and outsmarting the creature, and its eventual demise.
Having gained her energy back after the hearty meal, she hops up from the table and gets ready to make her way into to town to see if she can get some answers about the beast. She grabs a metal bucket off the back porch and proceeds to the water well. She brings the bucket back into the house, and pours it into a small basin she has in her room. She wipes away much of the grime from her late night and throws on some clothes. Grabbing her jerkin and pack, she heads for town. Her first destination will be Bawd's Saloon to check in on Halton.
Making her way through the little village, it takes her only a little bit to get to the Saloon. Inside she spots her friend Halton, as well as some other patrons having a morning ale and breakfast. Halton looks up from his conversation he was having with one man, and motions for Korey to come sit up at the bar with him. Once a break in his conversation finally happens, Halton calls to Korey "Korey, here here sit. I take it last night went good? Did you get the bastard?" Making her way up to the bar, Halton notices she's walking a little gingerly. "You hurt Korey? Need an ale to help with the pain or anything?"
"Good and bad,"Korey replies patting at her shoulder. Taking her seat, "Almost got the best of me, but I nailed the beast." She leans back, scratching her chin. "You know what I like...plus a shot of that firewater wouldn't hurt." She places her pack on the bar top and begins digging through it. She produces the gooseberries she had picked in the grove last night. "These look like they're about ready for your 'alchemical' touch."
Hal smiles as he looks at the berries, "They do in deed." Then the halfling hops down and makes his way towards Korey's favorite cask and begins pouring a tankard, when he's done he sets it up on the counter and starts rummaging underneath and finally produces a shot. As Korey begins to slide over coin, he shakes his head. "Only for the best ya know? Good job Korey. So does it look like I'll be getting a new mounted head?"
As Hal is talking one of the patrons speaks up, "Really? Why does the lass not pay? Is it cos' she got tits? That it Halton?" With that, as fast as lightning Halton produces a leather bat from out of no where, and smacks the man on the hand. Korey has heard about this bat before, but never actually seen it. To be honest she's only heard about it from her father, as he's the one who made it for Hal's father.
"She's drinking for free, because it's me damn tavern and I say she's drinking for free. Not to say that she's dispatched the beast that's been killing your livestock Eska, so if I were you I'd shut the **** up and drink." Korey's heard Hal talk this sternly before, but never at her, and only on rare occasions.
"Uh huh," a muffled affirmative comes from Korey as she takes a drink of the ale."Nasty looking thing, though. Might scare some of your business away. Gottem stuffed in the workshop at the moment." Looking down to the grumpy patron she pokes her chest out and raises her mug. "Don't be jealous, Eska. You can buy me my next one."She give the man a wink.
She takes a the whole shot of the firewater in one gulp, then immediately chases it with a swig of ale. "So my Pop said this thing is may be a worg, and that Ean Ramsey may be able to confirm what the beast actually is." Her demeanor takes on a more concerned look, "Ever heard of goblins being in this area?"
Hal gives Korey a smirk while she antagonized the old man. "If fluffy over there don't scare them off then I doubt this beast will. Maybe I can stop by and see it later." The halfling gives a little laugh at the stuffed bears name. Halton looks around the bar for the taxidermist. "I coulda swore old Ean was here not that long ago. Musta gone to work or something. But goblins you say? Around these parts? Nah, I haven't heard of any but i'll make sure I keep my eye and hears out for any rumors."
"Well, I'm going to see if I can track him down." Korey tosses back the last of her ale and carefully slides off the bar stool with a groan. "Gonna have to take it easy for a couple of days I think." She starts towards the door."Thanks for the drink, Hal," she says louder than needed to make sure Eska hears. "Swing by if you can this evening if you want to check out this thing for yourself."
Heading out the door Korey steps into the street, and begins to walk to the other end of the village. It takes her about 30 minutes with her ginger pace from the previous days festivities. She makes her way to a large wooden, barn looking building. She knows this to be Ean's shop, and his home above said shop. Out front on a rocking chair the weathered man, salt pepper hair and stubble looks upon Korey.
"How do ye do Korey? Got anything good for me? I heard ye been out huntin quiet a bit." He smiles a gap toothed grin, one of his front teeth missing.
"Hiya, Mr Ramsey. Things are a little tender right now. How are you getting along? Mind if I have a seat?" before even getting permission she plops down on the porch next to Ean. "So, word travels fast around here. I guess I shouldn't be surprised." She give the man a smile. "But yeah, I went after that beast that Aldric and those other boys ran into by the great oak... Which reminds me, have you heard how that one is doing? He wasn't looking good when I took off."
Ean Ramsey just smiles at Korey as she takes a seat next to him, not minding in the slightest. "These old bones creak and crone, but they're still moving." He laughs. "Aye that word does. The boy Aldric is still in the healing house. It will take some time to heal him up I'm afraid the beast got into him pretty strong. So how did your journey fair, please let this old man live through your young bones." Ean asks, and Korey obliges, give the old man a blow by blow recount of her adventure to the great oak. When she was done, both were smiling. "Sounds mighty fine indeed. So I take it you wish to mount your exploits, is that to be the case?" He smiles down at Korey. "I'd be so inclined, from that amazing story you told me. How does 25 gold, and trade for some tanning work. See I have a couple animals I'm about to slaughter and was going to have the hides tanned so i could use them in some of my work. You convince your pa to give me a discount and I'll give ya one."
Korey obliges and gets a kick out of telling her story to the older man, so she can brag some more - adding beast hunter to her reputation of premiere leatherworker won't be a bad thing she thinks. "Well, I kinda had plans of my own for the hide, so a full mount would be out. But maybe mounting just the head. Something I really hadn't considered. Plus I'm a little shy on coin right now." She absent mindedly begins to massage her sore shoulder. After a moment she continues, "So, the main reason I'm here is to get some help identifying the beast and see what you might know about the beast. You've seen a your fair share of strange things in your years, right? As I said it was some large wolf, but not like any type of wolf I've ever seen. Pop said could be a worg...know anything about those? "
"Hmm, a head mount. I'd do a head mount for ya for the deal with yer pa." The old man looks up to the sky in his thinking and remembering days of old. "Aye a Worg I've heard of them and seen them. They prey on the weak, they're hunters. I know some are raised by those ugly Goblin creatures, but there are also some out in the wild. They seem to be lone hunters if I remember. I know members of the Last Age have hunted them in the past along with other beasts for skins and other things like animal parts."
"Think we should be concerned that this one found its way here? Have there been any goblins around here in the past?" A thought just came to the mind of Korey hearing they are typically lone creatures:I didn't even check out that cave to see if there were any pups in there.
We didn't state the sex of the beast, but I imagine she would have easily discovered this when field dressing it?
"Did it have a saddle?" Korey looks back at the man puzzled, as she never saw a saddle or any markings that would suggest one to be on the beast but that would also be an odd question as who the hell would ride a beast like that. "Haha. From your look I would say that a no. So nigh i don't believe we should be all that worried. Probably just some lone hunter. More than likely just checking around the forest hunting easy prey." Then the man starts to get up, does a couple of stretches. "This was a nice talk Korey, we should do it again. Bring the beast by, or it's head and i'll see what I can do for a mount for you. I'll bring by the hide from the asses and cows once I take them to the butcher for you and yer pa."
"Korey? Korey is that you I was just looking for ye. I spoke to yer Pa and he showed me that beast you killed." You hear someone yelling your name and begin making their way up to you. He's in finer clothes. A balding older man, you know this to be the Alderman.
Ean walks back to his shop with a hand in the air, "Afternoon Alderman, need to get back to work now."
"Well I wanted to talk to you see. I mean I know it's not much but on behalf of the village, I want to pay you for dispatching the beast as it did kill many of our livestock, and hell what it did to those boys. It would have taken far to long to get anyone from The Last Age here to dispatch it. We really appreciate it." The Alderman takes Korey's hand and shakes it firmly, then puts a small leather pouch in her hand containing 175 gp.
"Thanks for the info, Mr. Ramsey. I'll talk to my Pop and see what we can do on that trade. Shouldn't be no problem." Korey pulls herself up off the porch as the Alderman approaches, and gives him a wave. "Hiya, Alderman. Whatcha think about that thing, pretty ugly, huh?" Taking the pouch from the Alderman, "Oh my! This is a bit unexpected... Just trying to do what I can to help out." Pretty good coin here...I've always wanted to earn some extra so Pop could take it easy. "Thank you, sir."
"Of course of course. It's the least we could do for you for protecting our village." The Alderman smiles as he brushes off his cloak some. "I must be off, more work to attend to as you know. Busy business being an Alderman." The Alderman walks off toward the center of town.
You would know that the Last Age, or in their full name Hunter's of the Last Age, are an ancient order. They are a set of monster and beast slayers, towns can hire one or a team to hunt down beasts in the area. There are stations of the order all through out the continent. No one from the order has ever actually been the Hagar, as it's a small town and there has never been much need.
Korey is a little surprise at the abrutness of the conversation, "Oh...uh. Okay, not a problem. I suppose if you hear of any other beasts in the area that need taken care of, you know where to find me." She says awkwardly as she's not used to advertising for her new services. "Have a nice day, Alderman. Thanks again."
Under healthier circumstances Korey would have more if a skip to her step, but her pain has definitely diminished due to this unexpected remedy. She decides to make her way home as she has accomplished what she set out to do for the morning. Probably best to begin getting that worg skinned.
As you head back to the tannery people in the street wave and ask about you. While the people of Hagar have always been friendly, it's a bit odd to Korey that it seems so much of the town is going out of their way to greet her.
"Probably not good for meat. Looks to be built like a wolf too lean. Maybe able to make some jerky though. But a cloak, I would say you could make something like that from the pelt."
