Greenest is nestled along the Uldoon Trail, serving as an oasis of civilization for weary travelers in the Western Heartlands. The settlement is no Waterdeep, but it's fairly sized for how out of the way it is. It is frequented by traders between Amn and Cormyr, bringing gold to the town's crafters, merchants, and innkeepers. For whatever reason you've found yourself in this town, you eventually settled in to the Bull Toad, a tavern near Greenest's center just west of the keep.
It's a sultry Summer evening, and the sun is just beginning to hit the horizon. Warm orange and pink tinged light filters in through the tavern windows as a worker starts to go around the common room, lighting oil lamps attached to the walls. Though not quite the most popular establishment in town, the Bull Toad is still moderately busy tonight, with a decent crowd gathered in the common area. Smells of cooked vegetables and smoked meats fill the tavern, and a dull murmur makes a backdrop for the music being played.
As more and more patrons begin to come through the front doors for the night, what are you all doing?
The elf had been in town for only a couple of days, bearing the same troubled face of someone clearly out of their element whenever she showed up at the tavern at night. Even though she sat at the center of the bar, she keept mostly to herself, with a mug of ale and a bowl of grilled greens in front of her, eating with her hands and participating in nearby conversations only to shoot down the bragging of other travellers, "You bhin would be nothing more than drake munch where I come from." by sharing snippets of her stories hunting the dangerous reptiles of the Snakewood down south, the rich details of which gave no room for doubt of their veracity. She wore an green-tinted leaf-shaped scale mail adorned with preserved leaves and paired with dark sturdy reptile leather boots and gloves, along with the blades, bow and a dark green cloak hanging from her back, her skin is light brown and she bears dark tattoos acros her face and athletic arms ((for those fluent in either or both, they mesh various elvish and draconic words)) and her eyes are a peculiar hazy green.
As the nights passed, those who paid attention at the outsider elf could see the growing change in her demeador, as if eagerly waiting for something and lost deep in her own thoughts and decisions.
Sariel Phyll is just entering the Bull Toad. I have shoulder length dark brown hair. Messy but in a ponytail. Light brown skin with dark green eyes. Smile on the face most of the time. Starting to cause wrinkles.
"I feel a little tired than usual today, but duty calls." I sigh to myself.
As I enter the tavern, I take out my dark green viol. A little worn for wear but sturdy still. It's strapped around my body with a leather cord. At the back of the viol, there is a burned engraving of a harp. I start to tune it, like second nature.
I wear leather armor, and underneath I wear dark red robes with white stitching and wear a finger-less green leather glove on my right hand. It has the same harp on the back of the glove but with white thread embroidered on it. I have a quiver of arrows as well, and from within, I take out this dark red bow for the viol.
I've been here every other week since I came to Greenest six months ago. The crowd has been good. So, I thought to make some coin at night. Helps me and also those in need.
I head to the bar. I greet the bartender with a smile and order an ale and a glass of water. "I'll eat later."I said to myself.
This night would be the 5th for them in this town of Greenest. It was getting to be time to move on, for she dare not stay in one place for too long. Sitting with her back to the bar counter, an empty plate beside her and a cup of water in her hands, Ramia Elwood looked better than she had in a long time. The dark circles under her eyes were faded and less baggy, her skin tone was flush with color, and her cheeks were no longer so sunken. Nights of rest in actual bed, and these past few weeks of having a competent traveling companion had done wonders for her. In truth she was torn between a nervousness of what might happen to them if they traveled together for too long and the relief of having someone as regular company.
The half-elf wears no armor, merely a black tunic and matching pants, with a very worn pair of boats. A red hooded cloak hangs off her shoulders. Her stark white hair is pulled up into a bun, and her ears marked by three silver piercings. A thick steel band hangs from her wrist, with a bright ruby crystal embedded in the center.
As more folk begin to pour into the tavern, she leans her head towards Adem(assuming he is indeed around), "Were you planning on moving on tomorrow, or staying another night?"
Aryniel had been restlessly moving her leg up and down at the stool, clearly anxious or distressed. She couldn't help but soon notice the recent arrival tuning his instrument near the bar, it had been the first the she saw him here, at first scrutinizing him from the feet up with narrowed eyes, but seemed to gain a hint of relaxation when she was done, her leg even stopped jumping. As the bar tender handed the drinks, Aryniel chipped in accented elvish "The Ballad of Jarsali and the Treant, poet. Do you know it?" the hunter turned to regard him, "Bless my ears with the songs of my home and I may cover your ale for the night."
"The Ballad of Jarsali and the Treant, poet. Do you know it?" the hunter turned to regard him, "Bless my ears with the songs of my home and I may cover your ale for the night."
"A classic, madam. A tale of love with no bounds." I tune my viol to the elven woman' request. I smile. "My name is Sariel." I hum to find the right chord and pluck a string. "And sure if you want to get my first round. Thank you! Ale for the occasional nerve and a good pick me up. Water for the vocal chords after."
Adem is caught by surprise with a mug to his lips as his new traveler friend's question is spoken. He sets the drink back on the counter, rubbing the back of his neck as he gives the question some thought. "It wasn't on my mind to be honest. I'm not really due anywhere on a specific date." After pushing a stray strand of platinum blond hair out of his face, he grabs the ale again and takes his drink. Over his leather armor is a midnight blue overcoat with steel colored accents. At one point it might have been a finer piece of clothing, but now it was faded, with some small wear and tear around it. A dagger hangs at his belt, along with various pouches that seem to go all the way 'round. Leaning against the bar next to him is an oakwood quarterstaff, with iron shod on the ends. A holy symbol of Mystra hangs from his neck, though he doesn't seem like any kind of priest. "Getting restless here?"He asks of his companion, knowing by now to not bother asking her for specifics.
"Something like that," Ramia replies as her eyes track around the room. There was an unease at the back of her mind, an uncomfortableness that wouldn't leave no matter how she tried to squash it. The anxiety was starting to set in, it always started this way, this nagging feeling that something horrible was due to happen.
Again trying to push the feeling down, she attempts continuing the conversation as a distraction. "I guess I'm just feeling well rested and ready to go. Where were you planning on heading from here?"
Alkyn’s initial nervousness quickly diminished after introductions on the road; he seems comfortable in idle conversation and is seem always to a good listener, effortlessly keeping the conversation going when an awkward silence looms. The details of his past remain unclear, though it is clear he plans to meet someone in Greenest. On the first night he quietly asked the barkeep a question, and his response was audible to anyone at the bar: “No, noone by that name here, sir. But if they arrive, I’ll let them know you asked.”
Since then, he has spent each night quickly checking the other inns in town, then returns to the Bull Toad to sit with his companions his back to a wall and eyes scanning the room from the darkness, content to watch and listen. With his dark hair, black leather armour and dark cloak it is easy to forget his is sitting at the table.
Tonight, as he sat in his usual chair, he scanned the room and frowned. “Never seen so many anxious people in one place.” He cocks his eye pointedly at some of the newcomers then settles back to nurse his drink, watchful.
As Ramia asks her question, he tilts his head and looks at Adem, curious to see what she and Adem plan to do.
"Ever been to a courthouse?"Adem quips in response to Alkyn's comment, taking a brief moment to follow his gaze, though he didn't seem as worried about it. He finishes off the last of his ale and sets the mug down back on the counter for the bartender to refill at their leisure. As he turns back, his attention goes to Ramia to answer her question. "Next stop for me is in Elturel, so I can report my failure to accomplish anything meaningful in person to someone. After that..." He trails off with a shrug. "Wherever I'm told to go next."
"Ever been to a courthouse?"Adem quips in response to Alkyn's comment, taking a brief moment to follow his gaze, though he didn't seem as worried about it.
Alkyn shakes his head, "I do my best to avoid such places," he says with a smile, then glances around the room again. "But, inns...that's another matter. And people do come to them to forget their worries. Some just need more practice than others, I guess."
He trails off with a shrug. "Wherever I'm told to go next."
This last remark catches Alkyn's interest, "And who is that does the telling?"
A smirk forces its way through Aryniel's stern features as she hears the first notes of that familiar ballad. She nods to the tavern keeper and pushes the drinks towards Sariel with the back of her hand, then fiddles with a pouch on her belt, producing an Amnian Taran ((sp)) and sliding it to the other side of the bar. "No Madam. Hunter."she remarks, apparently unfamiliar with the term, "Aryniel, of the Quiet Forest." and she turns on her stool to get a better sight of the musician and the rest of the establishment.
"Elturel..." Ramia echoes, wracking her brain for information on the city. She was almost sure she hadn't been before, but maybe when she was a young child? "I honestly can't remember if I've ever been. Is it any nicer than the settlements in Amn?"
"Most people do, but usually if you're there it's because you don't have a choice." Adem replies, thinking back to his time in Waterdeep. "As for who does the telling, depends on who's there. Our members are very much the 'in-and-out' type. Whoever has the highest rank at the Church's temple and has something for me to do basically." After thinking for a moment, he frowns and adds," do hope it isn't Reinhard though. He sends me to the worst places." Next he comes round to Ramia's question, offering a non-committal shrug."Elturel can be a bit, well." He pauses for a moment, searching for the right word. "Stuffy? Once we get there, I don't intend to stay for longer than I have to."
The tavern grows louder as more people have arrived now, adding their chatter to the background noise of the common room, while Sariel and other performers add their music to the ambiance. Despite the apparent nervousness of some that Alkyn noticed, it seemed as if nothing could wrong. The town was happy, trade was flowing, and the tavern was beginning to fill with merriment.
Craaaaaaack!
A thunderous boom rings out above the tavern, rattling the glass windows. There are some gasps in the tavern, which turns into reserved chuckles before the conversations resume.
A few moments later...Craaaaaaack!
For a second time the windows rattle as thunder shatters the air, this time completely silencing the tavern. The patrons sit in quiet apprehension for another lightning strike, but it doesn't come. Outside, you begin to hear screams...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
At the sound of the screams Alkyn glances first at the people who attracted his attention earlier, -- those that seemed anxious -- then around the inn more generally. Perhaps they knew something was afoot? (( Perception: 23 (passive 17); Insight: 17 (passive 15) )).
Finally, his attention turns to his recent traveling companions as he rises, "Something's amiss. Perhaps we should investigate?"
Irrespective of what they choose to do, Alkyn moves to a side window near the door but not in direct light, opens it, and lithely creeps out, trying to avoid detection by whatever it is that is causing people to scream.

Gulping down her ale through the first crack of thunder Aryniel shaking her head at the other patrons startled by that simple display of mother nature's power. When the second one comes, she stops and lowers the mug, licking the frothy foam off her lips as she raises one eyebrow and looks out the window, she didn't remember eyeing any dark clouds in the distance today, or had she? Her thoughts seemed clouded indeed for her not to pay close attention to the elements around her.
Then the screams sounded out in the street, now Aryinel's hand instinctively shot for the bow hanging from her back, but looking around the place she stopped short of wielding it, not wanting to further start these city-folk and end up in trouble. Taking several steps towards the more central area of the establishment, or any place she could have ample view of at least one of the windows, she looked outside intently, trying to spot any commotion or the source of the screams.
A quick glance around the tavern reveals nothing amiss among the patrons to Alkyn. His shuffle to exit discreetly was not as discreet as he might have liked, but any watchful eyes would definitely be elsewhere...
Aryniel wouldn't be misremembering, the day was a bright and cloudless one, even as the evening neared. Looking out one of the other windows, she sees people running, and a warm orange light, the glow of embers.
Fully outside himself, Alkyn would find himself amidst the beginning of a great panic. Townspeople dart through the cobbled streets, harried by attackers: bandits, raiders, kobolds? The thatch roofing of a building to the southwest burns quickly, roaring into an inferno. Knee-height bushes line the tavern you just crawled out of, but besides that there isn't much else in the way of cover nearby.
With Alkyn hurrying off to slip through a window, Adem takes the moment to collect his staff. He looks to Ramia, then nods to the door. "I'm not so acrobatic as he."He turns to leave through the tavern's front door. Before reaching it, he grabs a cup of water off a nearby table and splashes it over himself, drawing a symbol in the air with his finger and speaking an arcane word. A frosty aura spreads across his limbs and torso. With that, he steps outside, and into whatever fray has come their way.
