News has spread that a dragon has been spotted around the mining town on Phandalin and is possibly making its lair somewhere in the nearby Sword Mountains. Farmers in the area claim that some of their livestock have gone missing. Other locals are worried they will have to pack up and move soon if something isn't done about the dragon. Flyers have been posted in the surrounding towns, reaching as far as Neverwinter, asking for any brave adventurers to come to Phandalin's aid. While town criers and traveling merchants have also been spreading the news that Phandalin is in need of help. Will you answer Phandalin's call?
Hey there, Sir_Karnic here; I'm looking to step over that low entry barrier that is to become a DM. I figure the best place to start would be with the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure, you get to fight a dragon after all, and then go from there. I'll keep the game at a maximum of five(5) players and leave this recruiting thread open until Sunday evening (about 08:00 Pm MST, or GMT -7). After that, I'll go through the posts and choose the players for this game. For character backstories you can write as little or as much as you'd like, please use the spoilers box if it is too long. Alright, I'll stop typing out sentences now and get down to the bulette points.
Posting: I'd like for players to post at least once a day and a little faster during combat, but I know we all have lives so I won't be very strict about it. If a few days go by without posts I'll move the story beat along or NPC the character in combat; though I'd like to avoid doing the latter. Also, as a curtesy to me as the DM and to your fellow players, please let me know if you want to withdraw from the game or won't be able to post for a while.
Gameplay: Being relatively new to running a game I'd like to keep mostly to RAW (rules as written). However, I do want to try using the rule of cool too; so don't think you can't post a unique or cool idea for the use of an item, spell, etc.
Courtesy: Please be courteous to me and your fellow players, we are all here to play and enjoy a game after all.
Feedback: Let me know how I'm doing as a DM. I'd like to know if there are places I can make improvements or if I made a mistake in some game ruling. I would also welcome suggestions on how to improve the play-by-post experience, I know it is not the easiest medium to use, and things I can do to improve my DMing style.
Lastly, have fun: Just have fun!
Character Creation

Races, classes, and backgrounds: Please use only the official material (Critical Role content is acceptable)
Level: Start at level 1 (Milestone based progression)
Equipment: You can either take the starting equipment or roll for your starting gold and buy your equipment.
Bonus: You start with a free inspiration point, just for being awesome!

Hey! I have a question about character creation, how do you feel about the optional rules in Tasha's for racial ability score assignment and class feature options?
Name: Shaevyre, or Shae to her friends
Race Eladrin (Spring Season, I used the one from Monsters of the Multiverse but could easily change it to MToF if that would be easier)
Class Druid (plan on going Circle of Stars at level two)
Background Sage, she focuses her studies on the Stars (I suppose that's a little on the nose).
Backstory Growing up, Shaevyre was told the stories of her family and their adventures. Her parents were adventurers, as were her grandparents, and their parents and their grandparents; going as far back as anyone could recall. She new she was destined for something big, but her future was derailed when her parents failed to return from their last adventure. Young Shae was sent to a secluded monestary where she has spent the better part of her last century studying the stars for omens and trying to hone her magic without the help of her lost family. For a while now she has been watching one particular constellation that she has been seeing in her dreams that she has taken as a personal omen. When she heard of the dragon arriving at nearby Phandalin, she took notice and when the reports kept coming, she decided it may time to rejoin society. She packed up her bags, said her goodbyes to her fellow sages, and left to investigate for herself.
(I'm not sure what I did to make this throw a warning for potentially manipulated die rolls... it happened after I added the roll for the gold. If you want me to re-roll, just let me know)
Hey! I have a question about character creation, how do you feel about the optional rules in Tasha's for racial ability score assignment and class feature options?
I forgot that Tasha's added optional rules for ability scores and other character aspects. I'm fine with using the optional class feature and customize your origin feature.

Class: Bard (College of Creation, once lvl 3 arrives)
Background: Feylost
Backstory: Kepheus e'Amos, son of Amos and Moira, cannot remember a time when he has not cherished words. Poetry, prose, song, speech, each evoking and shaping the essence of experience in different ways. When he was little, Keph would recite stories to his mother every evening - earning him the affectionate title 'Feather Tongue'. Later, when the threat of ruin drove him into the unsavoury employment of the Redbrands, he discovered a darker side to his passion through deceit and blackmail, and utilized this to great effect. It wasn't long until Glasstaff, the elusive Don of the band, realized Keph's talent and commissioned a 'dirty anthology' - or collection of sagas and poems, propagating lies about the greatness of their order. Keph eagerly agreed, performing his rough drafts to an audience of thieves by the campfire every night.
However, the lad has recently been experiencing visions - glimpses of a past life, of Feywildian forests and his own mysterious beginnings, although he doesn't know it yet. Stranger still are Keph's songs and stories - what was barely noticeable at first now makes him question what is real and what is not... aspects are beginning to come true. As this escalates, the bard doesn't know who he can trust. Certainly not the other Redbrands, and Moira refuses to speak with him. Perhaps he'll find out side by side a with ragtag group of unlikely allies ;)

First, let me welcome you to the world of Dungeons & Dragons! It is okay to be new to the game, we all were at one point, and I'll do my best to answer any questions about the game you might have; just send me a private message anytime. As for reading material, my top suggestions would be 1) read up on your character's race/class abilities and spells, 2) read the Rolling Dice and PbP Rules and FAQ posts to get an idea of how the play-by-post works, and 3) make sure to read the initial post of a recruiting thread. That will give you an idea of what type of game the DM wants to run and the type of players they are looking for. Along with any character restrictions or additives.

Backstory Having spent her life in Neverwinter as on orphan, getting to know the ins and outs of both the law and criminal activity and never feeling quite at home on either end, Lilniana eventually joined a loose group of citizen watchers, taking on investigations the proper authorities would not and helping all who had need. When news of the dragon appearing down by Phandalin, she sensed a new purpose and decided to venture out to see if she could be of service elsewhere.
