This is my first time DM's for Play via Post. I have played and DM'd D&D for, literally decades, but never via "mail". Should be fun !
I prefer not to use Flanking rules, however if players do, monsters do.
@Sonic11/Murial, I'll write up some text on how to start playing D&D5E and how I interpret the via Post methodology. I am here for you to ask questions of, feel free to post in the OOC invite, here or via Message.
Dagny walks down the stairs from the inn room on the upper level. The early morning silence accentuates each creak of the wooden stairs as she steps down them until she is on the bottom level. She notices Anima and nods courteously to him. She cinches the strap on her haversack so it sits a tad higher up along her mid back between her shoulder blades. She brushes her hands through the back of her black hair to lay it over the collar of her robe, the two strands of purple locks, braided and dangling in front of her ears. It is at this moment that anyone paying attention, notices the tarantula perched on her right shoulder. She walks up to Anima.
”Good morning, Anima. Did you get good sleep?” She then turns to Muriel and nods respectfully. “Miss…? Good morning as well. I am Dagny Jezril. Pleasure to meet your acquaintance. I’m ready whenever, Anima.”
Muriel looks at Dagny, and responds, "Hello, and good morning, the names Muriel, former diciple of the great monk Jashin." You also notice that her quarterstaff that is strapped on her back is painted black with swirling green patterns

HAVE FUN !
Alright, you can PM me the details on how to start
Chester comes walking down the stairs, his hand covering his mouth as he lets out a big yawn, his shoulder bag slung across his body. One side of his white beard is pressed in from being slept on and he has one some studded leather armor that is covered with black scorch marks and oil stains. "Eh? You just said in the morning, not right at dawn." He climbs up onto one of open chairs and gives a wave, "In case introductions are needed again, I'm Chester Copperpot. Let me just grab something to eat, and I can eat on the go if you all are in a hurry."

Refreshed from a night's sleep and a hearty breakfast you leave the inn and head towards the edge of the city, finally reaching the raised portcullis. Several competent-looking guards stand at the ready, looking outwards towards the forest. As you leave the city they look your small group over, one whispering in the ear of another, and you overhear the second respond “You're on”. The Sergeant frowns at them, and calls out to you;
“Good luck In the Forest of Wonders, and may you safely return. Beware of the strange horrors that lurk there, and be noted that the gates close at dark, so you will need to knock and prove yourself to enter before dawn”.
Exiting the gates, you see the forest about 300 feet away, the straight edge arcing in a large circle around the city wall, curving away to the left and right. The grass before the forest is closely cropped, but you see no grazing animals. Crossing the gap you see a gaping maw in the trees as if the forest is reaching out to swallow you. The forest closes around you, dense and dark, and looking behind the entrance suddenly looks very distant.

Time to next encounter & Reward will be determined at end of each encounter.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As you pass through the forest, the path starts to rise and the trees change from Oak and Maple to Pine and Juniper. Higher and higher the path rises, until maybe 300 foot ahead you see the trees start to thin, with the peak of a high mountain occasionally peeping from the leaf cover.
As the groups leaves the tavern, Chester climbs up on top of what looks like a metal boulder at a quick glance, holding his breakfast in one hand. He pats the top of it with his free hand and says, "Wake up K-9, we've got an adventure to go on and follow those three while I eat." The boulder uncurls as it stands up on all fours to reveal it to be a mechanical mastiff that Chester rides while he eats his breakfast.

As the trees end ahead you think you see slight movement from “something”, maybe it was a stick falling, a branch waving, a spooked bird or squirrel. But if it’s a creature, it’s well hidden, as you see nothing threatening from this distance.

Anima slows with the rest of the party, wary of what might be ahead. He looks intently as the forest ends, trying to see any danger ahead (23).
/OOC If you want to, make a perception check (1d20 roll + your perception skill), OR do anything else you want.. Examples might be to sneak ahead, send your familiar ahead, get spells or weapons ready etc.
Dagny watches as the forest closes around the group. She is slightly unnerved, but the dense and darkness of the forest does provide a little comfort. She extends her arm to let her tarantula crawl down her bare arm before it stops on her forearm. She gently pets it with a two-finger touch along it’s fuzzy back. She looks to Anima, Muriel and Chester. “You all able to see well enough in here?” She looks to Chester. “Chester, do you happen to have that neat contraption that produces light? It is a bit difficult to see in this place.”
Anima responds to Dagny “It is a little dim, but it looks like there is light ahead as the forest ends. There are some branches sticking out of the ground, but they dont appear to be dangerous”.
/OOC To explain; Twig Blight “False Appearance” ability. With an avg. 16.5 Stealth roll, a 21 (above) Perception roll will see the twigs.. but not able to make those out as monsters from 300’ distance in dim light.
Chester straightens up his hat after it gets knocked backed a bit from a tree branch. "Yeah, but it doesn't produce much. You'll probably get just the small area around you." He digs into his shoulder bag, again his full arm vanishing inside, and pulls out the rod with the bulb at the end. "Just push this button here to turn it on and push it again to turn it off." He explains to Dagny and points to the button on the side of the rod before handing it over.
((OOC: The device only sheds a light in a five-foot radius. It's part of the rock gnome tinkering ability.))

Muriel unstraps her quaterstaff and uses it as a walking stick, and says to the others, "We can't be too safe here, this forest is full of surprises, we must make sure to stay alert."
Dagny accepts the device. “I really appreciate it. I have a hard time seeing in the dark, honestly.” She pushes the button a couple times to get use to the device. She notes Anima looking very intently ahead. “Let me send Tara ahead.”
Dagny kneels to the ground as her tarantula familiar, Tara, steps off her hand and onto the ground. “Go up ahead and see what’s up there.”
This is the sub-thread for a Forest of Wonders sub-adventure where we will run this session.

The three adventurers gather for breakfast, having rested overnight and prepared for a gruelling day.
