“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
Seeking employment, you come across a postboard sign that promised wages, berth and travel with the SIlken Keel and were intrigued. Following directions from the people in the market, both accurate and misleading, you finally wind up at a well-worn table.
Hanging from the front of the table is a colourful banner, reading 'Silken Keel' in both Common & Elvish and you know you've reached your destination. Behind this scarred table sits a finely dressed Elf, rakish and laughing with the two others seated beside him. A loud conversation they were having comes to a halt as you approach, and he looks across the table at you, speaking firmly "What have we here? Another likely recruit for our fine ship? Are you looking for work? If so, we've the place you want to labour aboard! I'm Captain Weatherworn, and these are my First Mate Master Glass and Second Mate Master Ripples. What can we do for you?"
Regardless of your answer, you'll see that both Masters show a happy reverence to their Captain and good will flows in both directions. Master Glass is a thin individual, human, dressed almost as fine as his Captain but with a bit less flamboyant with colour. Master Ripples is a Water Genasi, his pale blue colouring a sure giveaway to his nature. Myriad trinkets hang about his person - rings, amulets, tokens, tattoos - all adorning his body with a cascade of materials over simple leather clothing.

Bruz is torn out of peaceful oblivion by the rough nudging of a booted foot in his ribs. Opening his eyes, he's assaulted by the glare of the sun and the smell and sounds of a harbor. (Must have been a helluva night, 'cause this certainly ain't my room). Looking around he notices that he's lying, rather comfortably, on a pile of rigging on board a harbored ship. The boot that awoke him is connected to the foot of a sailor who's features he can't discern due to the glare of the sun. The man tells him that if he means to make this ship his home, he'd best sign up with the captain and his mates first. Groaning, Bruz stands to his feet, stumbling into a nearby mast.
As he recovers, Bruz stretches to ease his sore muscles and takes a swig of his flask for a bit of the hair of the worg that bit him. At his full height, he's a little under six feet tall and he posses a strong chest and shoulders, though not as big as some other half-orcs. He wears a hooded sleeveless vest over a similarly sleeveless white tunic, exposing strong arms. His left arm is covered with an intricate tattoo that goes all the way up his arm and onto the left side of his chest and back. The black ink stands out well against his green skin. His outfit is completed with loose trousers and comfortable leather boots. His long dark hair falls loosely to stop just above his shoulders and he looks around with shinning gold eyes. While he steadies himself, he gets another look at the ship. (Well, the Splurging Sturgeon was getting a bit stale, and I've booked on worst ships before. Plus, I'm betting I'll get more than a few good stories sailing the Sword Sea).
His mind made up, Bruz makes his way off the ship and heads makes his way to the Silken Keels recruitment table after some directions from his new sailor friend. After he's greeted by the captain, he responds with a wide grin, "The name's Bruz and I'm looking to sign on to your crew for a fill of adventure on the high seas! I'm a pretty good cook, an even better brewer, and the best fighter you'll likely have on board!" He says the last bit with an even bigger grin and a flex of his powerful arms. "You give me a space in your galley and I'll brew some ale that'll turn your boys into men. I've already got a couple barrels of the stuff back in my room at the Splurging Sturgeon with the rest of my crap. I'll haul it all on board myself if you're agreeable."
OOC: I've bought all my items and my character sheet is good to go. Bruz will also purchase 5lbs of fabric bolts and 50lbs of grain for trade (for a total of 10GP spent on trade goods). Looking forward to this campaign!
Looking Bruz up and down, then again because there's a lot of terrain to look at, the Captain grins at the obvious signs of recent inebriation "From your size, matey, it'll take a lot of adventure to fill you up! Tell you what, you sign up for a berth and we'll try out your culinary skills in a contest aboard. Anyone who wants the post of ship's cook can each cook our entire crew a meal, once per day, and the crew will vote the winner in. "
"We're a generally sober ship, grog is about as far as I'd go, but if you've a special brew to share we can pick a safe night and a few of us can sample it. Agreed? Good! Then welcome aboard, crewmate and see us dockside before morning. If you're eager to stow off of the Sturgeon tonight, we'll assign quarters and you can get aboard right away."
After Bruz's acceptance, Master Glass assigns quarters to the hulking recruit, putting him in a cabin near the stern. After writing down the cabin assignment and name on a paper, he hands it to the half-orc and says with a deep voice "You'll find the bunks ample, maybe-cook Bruz, since we've built the Silken Keel with long crew in mind. At this time, no one else shares your cabin, so you'll have first pick.Welcome aboard!"
“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
Bruz's hangover headache flared when the captain mentioned a mostly dry ship, but he pushed through it. (There's a lot of room for interpretation in that word "generally"). The mostly-sober half-orc agreed to the conditions enthusiastically and thanked the captain and his mates. (I've got an ace up my sleeve that should give me a leg up if it comes to a cooking competition). Boarding the ship once more, Bruz finds his sailor friend and gets directions to his cabin. There he finds a nice bottom bunk and tosses one of his flasks (the empty one) on it by way of marking it. He debarks the ship and takes another pull from his secondary emergency flask. (Where are my aleskins? I hope left them in the room.)
(Gonna be tough hauling all that stuff from the Sturgeon here.) Two barrels, a backpack, and a mostly full (of tej casks) chest was going to take multiple trips and a lot of elbow grease. He figured he could hire a porter, but doing things the hard way gave him a chance to sweat out last night's booze and free up room for more. (Though I'm probably going to have to hold back a bit if this ship is going to be as dry as it sounds). Whistling a tune, Bruz strolls back to the tavern.
An older human gentleman with a very long white beard, short white hair, long drooping nose, and weathered green eyes approaches the table after navigating through ambiguous directions. He wears a green robe with embroidery resembling leaves and carries a quarterstaff in hand with a pristine looking spell book on the side of his pack. His of slender build, and is roughly 5' 8" with fair skin that looks as if he spends a lot of time inside.
He will purchase
1 lb of exotic substances = 100g
1 lb of herbs and spices = 30g
2 lbs of finished goods = 20g
10 bolts of fabric = 10g
100 lbs of grain = 10g
In Elvish he says to the Captain,
"Good day to you, Captain."
Then continues in Common, "Greetings to all of you. I am Carolinas, the green wizard. I am tasked with exploring the seas and recording a log of my travels for further study among those in academic circles. The posting promised travel and I require it...the potential for wages and more arcane knowledge sounds appealing as well. I may not have much physical strength, but I have strength of mind...and of the arcane."
Carolinas takes a piece of fleece from his pouch inbetween his index and middle finger with his open hand then waves on the end of his staff. A green flame resembling fire from a torch appears and which makes crackling noises similar to sap boiling in burning firewood.
A woman with skin the slightest tint of blue and long hair of an azure hue wanders around the port. She looks up and down the docks at the trade going on and is pleased with the healthy competition between merchants. Upon her back is her adventuring pack, with a shield strapped to the side and she wears a suit of scaled armour. Upon seeing the request for adventurers to work along a merchant ship, she appears reminiscent of her first time sailing on a ship.
Upon meeting the captain she gives a welcoming bow. "Good day to you, captain of The Silken Keel. My name is Sal, devout of The Lady of Mysteries." She looks about the others in the tavern. "It appears you could do with someone with knowledge of the arcane to join you, if you are willing to take a woman aboard. I may not be a burled ruffian like some who enjoy life at sea, but I will be one of your more dedicated workers, I assure you."
OOC: Purchase 3lb of spices and 100 lb of grain (100 gp), keep the other 100 for later.
All three of the hiring crew look over Carolinas as he speaks, interested in his effortless display of magic. The Captain smiles and nods at the Elvish greeting and responds once the applicant has finished "I think we have a place for mage, Mister Carolinas. Magic on the open seas is a valuable asset, especially during battles, but day to day you'll be tasked with other duties. That fair skin of yours had better be prepared or protected well, as the Mistress of the Waters marks us all with her colours. Can you extinguish fires as well as make them, Master Mage?"
--------------------------------
Admittedly showing more than a casual interest in the well-armed and armoured Priestess, Master Ripple takes the lead in continuing the conversation "Hello, Lady Sal. We have been looking for someone with the favour of the Gods for some time. Honestly, we were worried that we'd have to set sail without a Healer aboard which is never advised. By signing with us, you will have one of the most important posts we have, keeping us fit and healthy during our voyages. While your weapon skills are also valued, your healing has far more weight. Thank you for joining with us." He also stands and gives her a bow, his own blue skin shining like a dawn on the ocean.

Nimar regarded the banner. The Silken Keel. He pondered on whether it was a ship he had heard of before.
History check: 16
The dwarf then scanned the three officers before him. His gaze was steely under the shade of his heavy brow. His murky green eyes conveyed the wisdom and awareness of a man who had seen many things in his time both savoury and not. These eyes weighed up the captain and his mates, gauging whether their jovial confidence and easiness was born out of ability and experience or naïveté and a keenness to do something new and exciting. The sea was an even more dangerous place under an incompetent command and he had seen many a crew in his time lost to the deep blue by the follies of green captains.
Insight check: 21
"Aye, I'm Nimar. Nimar Spine." His voice was gravelly with a thick Dwarvish drawl. "Bin working this harbour all me life. If it's a bosun yer be wantin', than I'm yer dwarf. A man o' my age and sea legs won'ee settle for less. I ask fer a quarters to me own and a hot meal each day for me supper. I trust the pay'll be competitive with the other traders in these here docks?
"Well," Nimar held out a meaty hand to Captain Weatherhorn, "How about it then?"
OOC:
Nimar will purchase 4 lbs of brindlewood furniture for 60 gp. What item(s) of furniture will this include, please?
Carolinas says to the captain, "I may be an old man, but of course I can extinguish fire. Either by carrying a bucket myself, or by other means. If you will indulge me for a moment..." If one of them has a drink in front of them, Carolinas will point his staff at it and cast Shape Water. He will levitate the liquid out of the glass and let it hover in the air for a moment before returning it to the glass without spilling a drop.
"I can do this for larger bodies of water, though it has it's limits. I can also summon an invisible servant to carry buckets of water, or anything else. Perhaps one with knowledge of divine healing or a child of nature can conjure water, then I can manipulate it. Anyway, I don't want to get carried away with using magic right now and potentially causing a disturbance. I may be a master of illusion, but I don't consider myself a showman. So, what say you sir?"
He puts the butt of his staff down proudly while holding into the top with one hand and awaits the verdict.
*NOTE* Nimar's History check result - no information that you know of this ship.
Their jolly demeanor fades as Nimor studies them intently, his sea-worn features telling them much of his experience and his words telling of his temperament. Master Glass begins to respond, but then the Captain holds up his hand to interrupt.
"Master Spine is it? The true quality of any Boatswain is found in his handling of ship he's to care for. Ours is a new hull and not had more than a meager time on the waves. Do you think you'd be able enough to break her in, with all the inevitable problems that she'll have , in her youth? If so, we'll hire you on, at least until we've a few ports under her bowspirit to prove your worth. Our pay will not be found wanting, I promise you that."
"You'll have your single cabln, but failure to prove your value in keeping our home in shape and I'll see you bunking with the middies."
*NOTE* Insight check brings to your mind different results for each of the Officers. The Captain seems well experienced, with more than a few decades onboard ship, his balance and poise something learned over many voyages and challenges. Master Ripple is harder to read, his Genasi features hiding an easy valuation of his ability, but being blood-kin to water elementals bodes well. Master Glass is the one that gives you confidence in signing on board. Here is a man who, in his woefully short human life, has encountered the true heart of the sea. Both her fury and her passion have left loving marks on his face and body, reminding you of some of those who have been truly Chosen by the Sea.
OOC Your purchase is of furniture in general. If you want something specific, you can say so but it's just fluff for trips. :)
“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
A bit nonplussed at the demonstration, but hiding it well, the Captain says "Welcome aboard, Master Carolinas. Whether you manipulate the water or the fire, you will find a berth of certain as our Fire Warder. Your specific duties will be explained on board, but for now, you can stow your gear in the cabin Master Glass assigns you."
With that, Master Glass hands you a slip with a cabin number on it, saying "You'll be bunking with another mate, but you should make friends quickly. Any issues, bring it to me."He then carefully examines his manipulated drink as you depart.

Carolinas says, "Thank you for your kindness towards an old man. Oh, and I assure you that your drink is unaltered."He takes his staff, runs his hand down the length of his chest-long white beard and makes his way to his assigned cabin.

(Aye, this is a competent enough bunch.) The way the crewmen's demeanour had changed in Nimar's presence so quickly told of their ability to adapt to the situation at hand. The human assured him most. Here was a true sailor, a man whose flesh and spirit had been carved by wind and wave. Master Glass. He pondered whether perhaps he'd heard this name in the last few years, or of the other two for that matter.
History check: 18
The dwarf listened to the captain's words while maintaining his standoffish disposition. He approved of Weatherhorn's manner. He seemed a fair chap with integrity and respect for his ship and crew.
News of a near-virgin vessel piqued Nimar's interest. He had been longing for a challenge after the last few ships he'd serviced on. Those had been older girls in the prime of their lives, and the old dwarf had had to do little to keep them in good order. He needed a bit of excitement in his life. He wasn't for the scrap yet.
Nimar gave a curt nod after the captain had finished. "Aye that sounds agreeable."
His hand remained outstretched to the captain. "So, when do we depart?" A glint of humour twinkled in his eye; a faint clue that his demeanour had bn exaggerated to test the officers' worthiness.
OOC: First natural 20 AND 1. It's going to be a bumpy ride!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sal watches Carolinas after his audition with a mild interest in the wizard's capabilities, looking to see if he has any iconography to show if he would also be a worshipper of Mystra, or perhaps another god such as Azuth.
After Carolinas has left, she will address the captain again. "Although he is an accomplished mage with his spellcasting, I can also supply the divine aid from The Lady. Rather then having to shape water, I can create or destroy water to provide fresh unsalted liquid for your crew members, and her spells grant me the capability to ward others and rejuvinate what is lost via healing."
Average in height and stature for his kind, Sebastian keeps his prematurely grey hair cut short and often can be seen styling it to his exact specifications. He carries the look of an adventure, with his bow and shield slung about his ruck sack and a rapier hanging easily at his side. He wears two different styles of gloves on his hands. His sword hand has a short glove designed to keep a good grip on his sword but retaining maximum flexibility. His other glove however has a deep cuff that covers most of his off hand forearm, his traveler's shirt arm tucking well into the glove. He is not ashamed of what is under the glove though, he chooses to cover it so that his identity is not easily discerned.
More to come, waiting on an answer or two from DM
After talking to the harbor master and doing his own research, Sebastian found out that the Silken Keel was the ship for him. It was not only heading the direction he needed it to but rumor has it that they are hiring crew. Tymora was smiling upon The Blackhand today.
Tauiii - The Captain and his companions listen to your words and whisper a few words between themselves before turning back to you. "Cubic, you seem a stout enough fellow for a posting we have available, but you will have to be tested for suitability once on board. We will either have you as the Deck Commander or a regular deck hand, depending on how you do. The Deck Commander is our master-of-battles, responsible for tactics during combats, direction our troops as needed, where needed. Do you think you'd be willing to compete for that post?"
Spirel - *NOTE* History result - You are certain you've heard of a Master Glass involved in some barbarian war in the Icewind Dale, a few centuries back, but you can't understand how a common-looking human could possibly have survived over 400 years.
Master Glass hands you a paper with your cabin number written upon it, and says "Unless the augurys tell us otherwise, we depart on the morning high tide. Welcome aboard!"
Pokepaladdy- *NOTE* result of your perception check - Nothing that is obvious enough to tell you if he follows any particular deity.
The Captain respectfully responds to you with "We all sink or swim from use of our skills to preserve our vessel. If you see a need you can fill with your magics, feel free to do so!"

OOC Purchase noted. Rooms are bunks of four.
“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?"
"Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied

Minor Illusion (Improved version)
He snaps his fingers and it returns to normal.
"I can be of use to you—I'm sure."

OOC:

Oh, and I assure you that your drink is unaltered." He takes his staff, runs his hand down the length of his chest-long white beard and makes his way to his assigned cabin.
