Surrounded by dark wooden barrels of ale, filling the dusty cellar air with the strong scent of aged alcohol — you all watch as eight giant rats emerge from the darkness and block your path towards the broken wall. All of their dark, beady eyes can be seen gleaming in the firelight from your flickering torches, their large, fang-filled mouths opening on feral growls. And then, the first giant rat attacks.
It lunges for Vonbek, aiming to sink its teeth into the Barbarian’s flesh. (Attack Roll: 4) But although its fangs are large, the sharp, yellowed teeth clink against Vonbek’s armor harmlessly. With an angered squeak, the giant rat lowers itself back to the cellar’s floorboards, and the Barbarian will be the next to react. Vonbek, what will you do?
Fiselius' jaw drops at the sight, "That... that's a lot of rats." he mutters. He extends a hand at the closest rat and lets lightning flow from it.
Action: Shocking Grasp To-Hit: 8+5 = 13 Damage: 2 lightning Additional Effect: On a hit the attacked creature cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn
(if that's a hit; avoiding looking up the giant rat stat block to see whether or not the 13 breaches its AC)
Taking the opportunity, he heads up the stairs for a better vantage on the rats and to free a spot in the front for a more heavily armored ally of his. (So, using the top of the map as North: start->SE->S->S (top of the stairs at the bottom)
(Edit: Assuming Fiselius is next in the initiative and not one of the rats.)
(haha, critical hits and fails will function as written in the rulebooks, so that’s unfortunately a miss for Vonbek! a rule I’m omitting, though, is the ‘difficult terrain’ passing through other creatures, because that’s pretty crunchy for my tastes, and I’m rather lenient with movement overall! the map is moreso for visual aid)
The Dwarven Barbarian swings his battleaxe at the giant rodent in retaliation, but his blade sails over the creature’s head in a wide arc. The rat crouched behind it lets out a high-pitched growl — lunging forward to take its own attempt at piercing Vonbek’s skin. (Attack Roll: 8) This rat misses too, its teeth scraping against the Barbarian’s armor as it jumps back and spits angrily.
However, the rats aren’t yet finished with their ambush. Another giant rodent scrambles its way over one of the barrels of ale, its claws scratching harshly into the wood and making the container tremble wildly with its weight. Then, it leaps down upon Fiselius, also aiming to sink its yellowed fangs into the Wizard. (Attack Roll: 17) This rat is able to bite successfully, breaking the skin of the Gnome’s arm and dealing 4 piercing damage.
Yet another giant rat, after witnessing the success of its companion, attempts the same daring move. It recklessly climbs its way over the barrel standing between it and Garith, attempting to snap its teeth into the Cleric even as the container of ale rocks threateningly beneath it. (Attack Roll: Natural 1) The giant rodent tries to reach for Garith, but the barrel rolls backwards beneath its paws, sending it falling back onto the floorboards behind.
Fiselius, reaching his hand towards the closest giant rat, unleashes a Shocking Grasp spell. The rodent squeaks and stumbles backwards, the Wizard’s spell sending a bolt of lightning coursing through its matted fur. However, the rat doesn’t look too badly harmed as it snarls in rage, watching Fiselius move towards the top of the staircase.
Garith attacks next, sending his warhammer crashing down upon the first giant rodent. As the heavy swing of the Cleric’s weapon sends the creature smashing into the floor below — it already appears worse for wear, blood dripping from its face and staining its dark fur. With that, the next to react will be the Ranger. What will Izore do?
Going down the cellar steps, the half-elf glances left and right, noting dozens of barrels and casks, filling up the space. She feels the skin on her neck prickling and her shoulder blades tense, as her ears pick up animals rustling around.
Her emerald eyes can't see them, but Izore knows it is the rats that make the sound. She can just about hear their squeaks, a faint dragging of a tail, sharp claws scratching wood somewhere.
"A group of rats is called a mischief", she remembers the useless fact relied by Wymar once upon a time. "Sure sounds like some mischief in here".
And as if to prove her point, the creatures leap forward in vicious attack.
Suddenly, the teenager finds herself with one of the rats in front of her. Izore unsheathes her shortswords and moves to attack the vermin.

(looks like you’re doing fine, but I unfortunately can’t tell when I don’t see all the dice added up individually! you can also make attack and damage rolls directly from the buttons on your character sheet beside your weapons, and that way you can be sure all the necessary dice are added!)
Izore swings her shortsword at the giant rat before her, which sails over the large vermin’s head harmlessly. But the Ranger then swings her second sword, which meets the rat’s neck this time and slices into its fur. As Izore withdraws her blade, blood pours from the rodent’s wound and it appears as though it’s just barely clinging to life. As the other giant rats swarm in closer, cutting off the path to the rest of the brewery cellar — Emmaline closes in, slashing at the rat facing Izore with her longsword. With one swing of her blade, the rodent sinks to the wooden floorboards, its blood seeping into the old oak as it dies.
Watching one of its pack-mates slain, the giant rat before Vonbek squeals and darts in to attack the Paladin, aiming for Emmaline’s legs with its sharp fangs. (Attack Roll: 11) Its teeth scrape the woman’s chain mail armor harmlessly with the sound of clinking metal, and it crouches back to its original spot angrily. The next to react will be Vonbek! What will the Barbarian do?
[[OOC: How do cones works on a square tile map? And can a space be temporarily shared while casting a spell? Or is temporary sharing for movement only? ]]
Vonbek recovers from his first missed attempt and is poised to attack. As the Rat returns from its attack on Emmaline, he again attacks with his battle axe. He muscles up and puts all his might into the attack. (Attack 17, Damage 7).
(I imagine a cone would cut corners of squares on the sides, but as long as the enemy is within that tile, they'll still be hit by it! and spaces can be temporarily shared during both attacks and movement)
Emmaline swings her longsword at the giant rat as it darts away from her, but it manages to evade her blade. Once the giant rodent has returned to its spot before Vonbek, the Barbarian swings his battleaxe hard at the creature and slices its head right in half. The rat that stood behind its slain companion darts forward next, spittle dripping from its whiskered mouth as it snarls and attempts to sink its fangs into Vonbek. (Attack Roll: 11) Once again, the giant rodent's yellow teeth connect only with the Dwarven man's armor, not his flesh, and it steps back angrily — gleaming black eyes seemingly scanning Vonbek for vulnerable areas not shielded by firm leather.
In the meantime, the giant rat that had slipped and fallen from the top of the barrel recovers itself and maneuvers around the wooden container of ale this time, striking forwards at Garith. (Attack Roll: Natural 1) Even after slipping past the obstacle of the barrel, the rodent still doesn't even manage to graze the Cleric with its teeth — and it scurries back in shame. Next in line to react will be Fiselius, with Garith on deck! What will the Wizard do?
As the others slay some of the rats Fiselius feels the words of Emmaline fill him with renewed vigor and heads down the stairs. "That's a fun fact about the mischief, Izore. Let's cause the mischief some mischief." he says as he takes a place at her side. He lets out a dazzling display of light. Colors of all kinds and in vibrants hues rush towards the rats, causing momentary blindness and then heads towards Emmaline's right.
Movement: N->N->W (cast spell)->E->E (left of Emmaline, below Garith)
Action: Color Spray Hit-Points Affected: = 3+4+4+4+3+10 = 28 Side-note: I created a custom action in Fiselius' character sheet for rolling it Affected creatures start from current lowest hit points to highest. Much like sleep spell. Are blinded until the end of my next turn. (So disadvantage on the targets they can't see and we'll get advantage.)
With the cone hoping that the right directly in front of Vonbeck gets caught in a partial-square and the the three rats in the row above it are also in the AoE. (If the Izore location to cast it from gets Vonbeck in the AoE [I don't think it does since I'm visualizing the cone as a triangle fully encompassed by the square N of Izore for the first 5ft of its range] please let me know and how I might position it better to get those rats in range.)
Casting his Color Spray spell in a flash of vibrant light, Fiselius blinds the giant rat crouched before Vonbek and the other three rodents ducked in the shadows behind it. The rodents squeal in surprise and fury, their high-pitched squeaks reverberating off the dark walls of the cellar while the other two rats watch apprehensively. Garith swings at the creature that had just tried to attack him — and that would be a miss, but you do have advantage on this attack roll since the rat is blinded! So you can roll again for that attack to see if it hits this time.
