"I believe we have all that we need for now, Your Majesty," came the fighter's solemn rely. "We are grateful for your generous accommodations."
His eyebrows raised then as he heard the goliath and the half-elf conversing. Eager for a chance to prevent his Dwarven from getting rusty, he chimed in:
"So, you both speak Dwarven as well? Excellent! Hopefully neither of you mind me taking the opportunity to practice with you on occasion."
Finally, addressing each of his comrades in turn, Titus bade them a good night before retiring to his room.
Thrudor would just prepare a little for the long road ahead. Head to the kitchen and grab some bread and other little nibbles of food for the road for him and birds he comes across. He’d take notes in his journal and look at the stars to check the night sky for signs of anything troubling.
Jakus takes out a sheet of paper from his stuff. It’s filled with a drawing of some sort of mechanical contraption. Jakus doesn’t know what it is, but he looks at it anyways. “Where did you go? What are you doing?” He whispers in his room alone. Jakus then puts it away and goes to sleep.
You wake up in the morning to the sound of knocking on your doors. "Today's the day, folks. Gotta send you to Cynthesia. Come eat a quick breakfast in the dining hall in half an hour. And get ready for travel."
The king walks into the hall. "Food is ready now. We have a lot to discuss, so get ready quickly."
The scent of lemon fills the air as servers place food on the tables. Your rooms are filled with spare equipment such as weapons and armor for you to use.
Quickly getting himself ready for the day, Titus made his way down for breakfast. Entering the dining hall, he couldn't help but give a half-smile at the spread on the tables.
"Nice to be friends of the king," he thought, wondering just how much cost and effort went into sourcing some of the gourmet ingredients he could smell. Between the exquisite dinner and this, it was settled--he made a mental note to try to speak to the chef after his meal.
A kobold, who you recognize as one of the 2 armed kobolds supporting the one Jakus attacked, walks up to your seat and sits next to you. He scratches his chin with his claws, then grabs a lemon biscuit, slicing it in half with a flick of his claw as he stares into your eyes. "Your name is..."
Titus looked down at the kobold. Hadn't he been one of the ones to instigate last night's ruckus? Wondering what his game was, the former marine kept his demeanor neutral. "I am Titus. Titus Marshall. And you?"
"Onyx. Onyx Dreamfire. You were a soldier, were you?" The kobold grabs a glass of tea, drinking it down in one gulp and breathing some out as steam. "I'm sure that has earned you much respect, soldier. Much respect." He flips a gold coin in the air, catching it between his teeth.
Still keeping his guard up, Titus coyly responded, "Sort of. Marines don't always get as many accolades. Lifespan tends to be a bit longer though." He scrutinized the kobold, but found it hard to read his features. Then it hit him. Was this the kobold noble? He had changed though, so the fighter was uncertain. Buying himself another few seconds to think, he took another bite before continuing, "Quite the dinner entertainment, last night. I take it you're all from the north, near the encroaching winter?"
"Why yes, but I am protected inside city walls. The winter is cold, but our fire burns brighter. We are survivors. You must know what that means." The kobold takes the coin out of his mouth, leaving you to wonder how he could speak with it gripped in his teeth. "Take a look at this coin." The coin has an image of a warrior slaying a giant engraved on it. "This is a display of power, is it not? Isn't war? Wasn't our "little fun" last night a display of power? Let me ask you something. Do you want power?"
The other kobold sits down on the other side of Titus. "But his battles bring trama, don't they? He has witnessed corruption and bloodshed. He must prove he is ready to risk his life for Adenguard." "But of course, he'll need more than power. He has courage. I see a fire in his eye, he is ready to open up his soul to the wild." "But I heard you value teamwork. If only you knew someone from the north, the most trustable source of information." The kobolds laugh to themselves. The one who just arrived places a dagger on the table, scraping the word 'Honor' into the leather handle with his claw. "Do you know anyone from the north? You must be on the lookout for your allies." "But I have heard that the greatest allies are those you fear could be your enemy. Either you end a threat, you have a chance to counter a later one." The first kobold places gold coins in front of each of his eyes. "How would you like to make a deal? I see gold gleaming in your eyes."
A small, forced smile formed on Titus' lips. "I appreciate the offer," he said, lacing his words with far more politeness than he felt warranted. "But I already have a client I'm working for. Perhaps we can continue discussing this exchange for my services after my return?"
"A shame, really. You work for the king, yes. But you can work with us as well. We have an advantage you cannot get elsewhere." The first kobold places a small throwing dart on the table. It has a red tip. "Think about it while you go. You are going to need help to accomplish this task. We have everything you need." "That is tipped with witherblood. A poison that burns your skin. Use it to stun your enemy." "We'll be waiting for you. But consider what we have to offer."
They both leave, the dagger still resting on the table next to the dart.
Anasfyra ended the Trance at dawn, grasping at her necklace and sending thanks once more to her patron. She’d felt her seasons wanting to shift, but kept them steady, wishing to solidify her image in the party more before changing.
Preparing for the day took her more time than normal. She was used to her attendants, particularly the Fairies Nissa and Sprinkles, helping her by setting out the day’s dress as well as doing up her hair. Fortunately, she didn’t need a proper dress today. Or likely for many days going forward. Her well-made blouse and riding pants went on first, followed by a set of leather armor commissioned from a local leatherworker shortly after arriving here.
She strapped a dagger to her belt on each side of her hips, with a third being sheathed horizontally across her lower back. Her short bow hung from her backpack, and, thinking for a moment, she grabbed a quiver with a dozen arrows from the room, leaving a gold piece in payment. That quiver was placed at a shallow diagonal between her backpack and where the third dagger was strapped. Satisfied, she clenched her hand around her ring and cast Disguise Self once more. The spell took hold, her illusory features and body being identical to her normal self, but her clothing and equipment shifting to appear as nothing more than a deep blue dress of fine make.
———
Making her way into the dining hall, she pranced over to where Titus and the two kobolds from the night before were sitting. Coming closer, she saw one of them place a dart on the table while speaking of offers before they both stood and left. Grabbing a seat across from Titus, Ana took in the sight of both the dagger and the dart.
“An offering. Freely given?” She directed at the marine. “They certainly lack subtlety. A shame given their predisposition towards deals.” Ana cocked her head to the side. “Caution, is what I would advise. Lest unwelcome conflict should arise.”
(To avoid confusion, This is the last thing that happened for the rest of you besides Titus, comments 68 and 69.)
