Hello fellow Play-By-Posters
Recently, I and another user (Wsyperra) were in a game of SH:ACOC, both as players. Sadly, due to the DM not having enough time and the players besides me and Wysperra ghosting, the game fizzled out. I offered to take over as DM, so now, I am inviting you into the wondrous world of Arcavious. If you don't know how this works, go read the PBP FAQ by Firehawk. Feel free to post any questions you have. Below is more information.
What is Strixhaven?
Strixhaven university is not a school for mages. Rather, it is a school for utilising magical abilities to further your other interests, such as the arts. At Strixhaven, you will participate in the myriad of courses offered to students.
Is This Game Right For Me?
Strixhaven is a mostly lighthearted game, so those looking for death and gore and meat-grinding should look elsewhere. But, If you loved harry potter, this is the game for you.
What are the parameters for character creation?
-All Published content is allowed. If you would like to use homebrew/third party materials, please PM me so I can approve them.
-If your background does not give a feat, you gain a bonus feat of your choice. This can be any feat, but when choosing, don't try to break the game.
-Please roll stats in this thread. Reroll ones once. If you do not like your stats, you can reroll ONCE and must use the second set.
How Should I Apply? Please respond in the following format:
-Ability Scores:
-Character Name/Pronouns:
-Character Race & Subrace/Class & the subclass you plan to take:
-Background:
-Backstory: limit it to 1 or 2 paragraphs. If you do not want the other players to know your backstory, put it into a spoiler
-RP Example: write a short paragraph describing how your character would respond if they were on a stage in front of the whole school on graduation day. Even if you're character isn't the most...charismatic, you can still write a good RP Example. Take this as a chance to flex your writing muscles, or develop some if you don't have any (hint: you do. everyone can tell a story. It's part of human nature)
One last thing: This game is YOURS. So make it your own. Don't be afraid to make bold choices with the story, I am fine with bending the books, so to speak.

Hi, I'm Raccoon_Master,The Rocket Raccoon/Trashcan Tactician (as appointed by Drummer). Pronouns They/Them/Theirs.
My Characters: Brorminthe Crusher; Discoverythe Keeper; Theathe Scoundrel; Jorvirthe Weaver; Threlan,the Speaker; Zolyathe Inspired; Penley the Devourer;
-Character Race & Subrace/Class & the subclass you plan to take: Fairy, Artificer
-Background: Far Traveller
-Backstory: Weaver enjoyed the Feywild, but never really embraced the carefree lifestyle of her clan. She felt sort of adrift, worsened by the fact that time never seemed to matter there. One day, while halfheartedly chasing a flumph through a field of strawberry colored sunflowers, she stopped, catching an unusual movement out of the corner of her eye. Carefully approaching, she was startled to meet an equally surprised gnome covered in leather bands and copper fittings. Small arcs of static electricity washed over his hands and hair, and a near perfect circle of scorched undergrowth surrounded his feet.
The gnome, Waglin Copperbottom, was an artificer who had successfully managed to construct a techno-magical portal, and in testing it, discovered that it went to the Feywild. Weaver was fascinated. She couldn't stop asking questions, and Waglin was only too happy to share his knowledge. As he constructed a return portal, Weaver assisted, and unwilling to lose the chance to construct such wonderful things herself, she asked to return with him to his world. Waglin agreed, and Weaver embarked on a new adventure.
-RP Example: Her translucent, shimmering wings were tucked behind her, but she strode confidently up the stairs to the stage, enjoying the slight clink of her glass vials and alchemical flasks as she walked. Weaver had waited for this moment, studying for years, though she looked no older (or taller) than a child of twelve. Refusing to distract her audience by unfurling her wings, she knew the only way to reach the speaker's podium was through mechanical means. Pulling a set of steps from across the stage, grinning to herself as they scraped and groaned on the hardwood, she eventually made her destination and climbed up to see the assembly grimacing and clearing their ears. "What?" she asked, innocently.
Query about the setting: Is Strixhaven more like a high school (since you mentioned Harry Potter) or university? Just thinking in terms of what age range a character should/could be.
Strixhaven is a university, so while most students would be fairly young, who knows, one of the players in the game before it fizzled out was playing an old man who was trying something new. But generally, think about it as a college, so most human students would be in late teens early twenties. Feel free to play a child prodigy or an old guy.

-Background: Noble
-Backstory: When you’re the son of Baalgorath the Devourer, a prince of Avernus, and also a prophesied lord of chaos, life had its perks. Sure, your destiny was to shatter the tenants of law and bring suffering to millions of people, but you never had to wait in line for the theatre, always had dinner reservations, and, of course, could get into the most prestigious magic school without even filling out an application. Vex was the kind of kid who relished in his privilege. He wasn’t too keen on this whole lord of chaos thing, but he figured he had time to sort that out down the road. Meanwhile, he thought he’d enjoy the position of power he had while it lasted.
-RP Example: As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a fiery glow over the grand amphitheater of Strixhaven School of Magic, Vexarath Bloodmoon stood at the center of the stage, his presence commanding and his aura crackling with chaotic energy. The air buzzed with anticipation as the entire student body, faculty, and esteemed guests gathered to witness the culmination of years of study and dedication: graduation day.
Dressed in his finest robes, adorned with symbols of rebellion and defiance that seemed to pulse with dark magic, Vex surveyed the sea of faces before him with a smirk of satisfaction. This was his moment, his chance to shake the foundations of the institution that had tried to tame his wild spirit and bend him to its will.
Raising his hands to silence the murmurs of conversation, Vex spoke, his voice dripping with defiance and rebellion. "Esteemed faculty, honored guests, and fellow graduates," he began, his words cutting through the silence like a knife. "Today, we stand not on the precipice of a new chapter, but on the brink of revolution. For too long, we have been shackled by the chains of tradition and conformity, forced to adhere to the narrow-minded dictates of those who seek to control us."
The crowd stirred uneasily, unsure of what to make of Vex's inflammatory words. But he pressed on, his eyes blazing with righteous anger. "But no more," he declared, his voice rising to a crescendo. "Today, we cast off the shackles of our oppressors and embrace our true selves as agents of chaos and change. For it is only through chaos that true progress can be achieved, only through rebellion that we can forge a new path forward."
The crowd erupted into a mixture of cheers and murmurs of dissent, torn between admiration for Vex's fiery spirit and apprehension at the implications of his words. But Vex paid them no mind, his gaze fixed on the horizon, where the promise of a new world beckoned, one where the forces of chaos reigned supreme and the old order crumbled beneath their feet.
"And so, my fellow graduates," Vex concluded, his voice ringing out with conviction, "let us embrace our destiny as harbingers of chaos, as champions of rebellion, and as architects of a new world order. Together, we shall shake the foundations of reality itself and carve our names into the annals of history as the true masters of our own fate."
With a flourish of his hands and a burst of chaotic magic, Vexarath Bloodmoon stepped down from the stage, leaving behind a stunned and divided audience, unsure of what the future held but certain that it would never be the same again.

Ability scores: 151315101216
Character Name/Pronouns: Eliae Novellé (she/her)
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Warlock (Fiend)
Background: Not entirely sure yet. Maybe Sage?
Backstory:
Eliae Novellé's childhood unfolded against a backdrop of tragedy, her world shattered by the sudden loss of her parents in a mysterious accident. Left orphaned and alone at a very young age, she faced the grim prospect of an uncertain future, a life of helpless destitution looming ominously on the horizon. Devoid of kin and guardians, she stood alone in a world that seemed poised to swallow her whole, her fate teetering on the precipice of despair. Yet, fate, it seemed, had other plans. In the depths of her darkest hour, a figure emerged from the shadows, drawn to the flickering ember of potential that burned within her. Azrath, a powerful fiend with eyes that gleamed with otherworldly knowledge, saw in the young girl a beacon of untapped magical ability. Claiming to have known her parents, he extended to her a hand of salvation, offering her shelter and sanctuary under his darkened wing. With no other refuge to seek, Eliae cast her lot with Azrath, enticed by his promises of protection and guidance. Upon her agreement, Azrath whisked her away to the labyrinthine corridors of a grand manor, the fiend's dominion in the material plane, and the place she would come to call home.
Despite the whispers of darkness that clung to his every word and deed, Eliae found solace in the semblance of familial warmth Azrath bestowed upon her, clinging to him as her anchor in a world fraught with uncertainty. As the years passed, Eliae grew in both stature and skill, her bond with Azrath deepening with each passing month. In him, she found not only a mentor but a father, his presence a constant source of comfort to the girl. In turn, Azrath assumed the mantle of a caring paternal figure, showering her with affection and knowledge. Eliae eagerly absorbed the arcane teachings he imparted during his visits to his manor, learning the many secrets of infernal magic. Bestowed with a fraction of Azrath's own fiendish powers, she delved into the magical arts with a fervor born of newfound purpose, heedless of any implications that lay beneath the surface of her patron's seemingly benevolent facade. Oblivious to the infernal strings that bound her soul to him, she reveled in the affection Azrath lavished upon her. Thus, when he proposed that she further her magical studies at Strixhaven, Eliae leaped at the chance to prove herself worthy of his favor. Eager to showcase her newfound abilities and secure her place in his affections, she embarked on a journey into the unknown, her heart brimming with determination and anticipation for the trials that lay ahead.
RP Example: As Eliae ascends to the stage to claim her graduation certificate, an intricate tapestry of emotions weaves within her mind. Surrounded by the triumphant cheers of her peers and the encouraging smiles of the faculty, an elated wave of accomplishment washes over her. She had come so far, had achieved so much since she first set foot in Strixhaven, and she could not help but look back on her memories of the academy with fondness. Yet, amidst the jubilation, an undeniable pang of disappointment gnaws at her heart - the absence of Azrath. Casting a longing gaze across the rows of faces packed into the crowded auditorium, she searches for the familiar figure of her mentor, her father. Alas, her efforts are in vain. He is not here. Knowing this, Eliae suppresses a sad sigh. She is aware of Azrath's many unavoidable obligations in the hells, knows that his business is more important than some little ceremony. Still, the ache of his absence on what was for her, momentous occasion, tugs at her soul. Graduation - an achievement he had ardently encouraged, a milestone she had pursued to honor his faith in her. And yet, he is not here to witness it, to share in her triumph. Was it not he who had wanted her to attend this school in the first place? To learn what even he could not teach?
Still, amidst her sorrow, a steely resolve takes root within her. Clutching the smooth parchment of her certificate in her slender hands, she silently vows to redouble her efforts, to delve deeper into the realms of knowledge, to prove herself worthy of Azrath's investment. If her graduation alone was not enough to secure his pride, then she will strive for greater heights, pursue loftier aspirations - anything to see that flicker of approval in her mentor’s blazing eyes.

Unfortunately, mittens wasn't cooperating when the nurse workers were trying to heal her, and they couldn’t forcefully knock mittens out since it could kill her. they decided to awaken mittens(with Mavinda’s consent) and was finally able to have mittens cooperate and save her life.

Name: Theodore Habinurg the 3rd (Jack)
Race: Harengon
Class: Rogue
Background: Criminal/Spy
"Hey boss, I got that thing you wanted..." the smile on Jack's face vanished as he took in the scene in the room. Blood. Everywhere. Splashed about as if some demented artist was painting with it across the desk, floor and bookcase. The figure sitting at the desk was obviously beyond hope, red staining the entire front of his wide chest from several wounds, and fingers smashed into wreckage. Then Jack saw his dagger protruding from his boss and friends back. "What?....How..?" He slowly scanned the room, then seeing no clues, moved forward to reclaim his dagger. Turbulent thoughts crossed his mind as he reached for the weapon.
At that moment Tipper, another worker for the Keys entered the room, mouth agape. "Nononono! It's not what it looks like! I found him like this!"
Before another word left his lips, Tipper vanished , running and calling for help.
"Ah mother Laverna, this is bad..." Jack grabbed his dagger and ran out of the room. Lying, dodging, hiding, he made his way out of the House of Keys. Finally, able to rest in a quiet stable he shed warm tears of frustration and loss. Why would anybody kill Dom? and how did they get his dagger to do it with? What is going on?!
Calming his breathing and smudging his face, he pulled out the papers he had stolen.
"Greetings and Congratulations Marquis Theodore Habinurg, the 3rd of his name, We are delighted to welcome you to the grand halls of Strixhaven..."
An idea formed in his mind, how hard could it be to play a puffed up tart and hide in the halls of that school?

”I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.” - Douglas Adams
RP Example:
As Eliae ascends to the stage to claim her graduation certificate, an intricate tapestry of emotions weaves within her mind.

-Character Name: Mittens. Pronouns:She/ Her/ It.
-Race and Subrace: awakened cat (alternative) Siamese. Class: Wizard
-Background:Noble
-Backstory:Mittens lives in Strixhaven after Professor Mavinda Sharpbeak picked her up off the street when she was a kitten and she lived a pretty posh life in the school afterward as the school’s adopted cat. one day, a student's wayward spell ended up hitting mittens and badly injured her. Unfortunately, mittens wasn't cooperating when the nurse workers were trying to heal her, and they couldn’t forcefully knock mittens out since it could kill her. they decided to awaken mittens(with Mavinda’s consent) and was finally able to have mittens cooperate and save her life.
RP example: As Mavinda congratulates all the graduating students, mittens sits promptly on her shoulder, silently judging the students. Then Mavinda says “Mittens, do you have any words for the students?” Mittens lowers herself to the mic and speaks. “To those of you that have fed me or given me a part of your meal, you have my blessing and I hope you find success in this world. However, for the rest of you, I could not care less about you and hope the weight of this world mercilessly crushes you until you are nothing but a fine paste. That is all I have to say” mittens jumps off of Mavinda’s shoulder and walks off stage.
PS. The awakened cat race gets +3 on their dex ability roll, -5 on strength ability roll, and with the Siamese sub race they get +1 on intelligence ability roll but I already added it all
I'm satisfied with my stats, I'm afraid if I roll again they will be worse =)
