I will continue with my Vicious Mockery (Cantrip) on Giant Rat 2 (unless it's dead where I will aim for any of the others - "From the smell I take it that you're the reason why there's so many flies around here!"
Wisdom Save - DC = 12, Damage on fail = 2Psychic Damage and on a failed Save it will have Disadvantage on it's next turn. Successful Save = No Effect at all.
(It never hurts to repost. Waiting on Xanth to see what he does. See if I have one or two rats left. Not to mention which poor little rat gets viciously mocked. Ragdor could always work to take out another one in round two.)
(OOC-Each spell has the range posted on it. Your crossbow has an 80’ range, so you are good. Your Guiding Bolt 120’, but you only have two of those until your next long rest.)
XANTH 22ALDWIN 20RAT 1(DEAD) RAT 2 (-3) RAT 3 (good)13 GLYNT10PORTIA 6RAGDOR 4
ROUND TWO
With a roar XANTH swings his glaive at the third Giant Rat. Bits and pieces of the rodent fly around. It’s dead.
The big Barbarian then with a flourish spins the glaive around to bash the second Giant Rat with the butt. That Giant Rat dies too. (Quite the comeback!)
VICTORY!
ALDWIN will be trembling from the encounter. He then looks at the rope descending into the darkness. He knows that Magda would not be able to descend it. With a heavy sigh he offers good tidings to the rest of the party but decides to turn around his cart and head back to town. He was not going to leave his mule alone.
(OOC-We are now a party of four. GLYNTwas able to spare some poor rat mockery.)
The rest of the party can now descend the rope without difficulty to meet up with XANTH.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I descend the rope, pat Xanth on the back for a job well done and (If he is hurt) cast Healing Word on him by Saying "Toughen Up" ... with that he heals 4 Hit Points.
While tending to Xanth, you will notice humanoid footprints, as well as rat tracks of unusually large size. The footprints lead down the stairs.
Among the rubble is an old ring of stones that contains (and is covered by) the accumulated ash of hundreds of fires, though no fire has been lit here for a few years. Inside the ash pile are a few rough-hewn spear tips of goblin manufacture and small animal bones.
Portia will also climb down, and assuming she also sees them (or they are pointed out) she will examine the humanoid footprints to see if they are all goblin sized or if some recent ones could be from the party we are tracking. (preemptive investigation check: 18)
While Xanth is having a quick breather I will absent mindedly poke through the ash in the fire pit ... collecting and counting the spear tips and wonder why they ended up in a fire as that seems wasteful (I'll keep a couple for myself - waste not want not), as well as trying to figure out the animal types that were cooked, mainly looking to see if any larger animals (ie: the two humans we are looking for) are in there too. Investigation Check (I AM proficient) - 9. (Note: I am NOT Proficient in Survival, Nature or Medicine - Just looking for obvious clues).
I'll also hold off on my last spell slot in the hope that Ragdor can tend to Xanth - or a short rest enables him to recover himself.
I will say "Thanks Xanth - remind me not to get on your bad side - that was an impressive display you put on back there - and Portia - that first shot of your was deadly".
During a short rest, PORTIA examines the tracks. The majority of the humanoid and most recent tracks are Goblin. But the investigative Halfling is barely able to discern at least three human-sized tracks, likely weeks old. The tracks were heading down only.
GLYNT collects five spear tips and determines the bones are of both common and giant rats.
After rest the party takes the stairs.
The 5-foot-wide stairs that descend are roughly carved. They are not difficult to traverse. You come across several small landings that has the stairs that switchback to lower depths. The party will not find anything on the landings. On the third landing those able to see in the dark will see a fortress below. The subterranean citadel, though impressive, seems long forgotten, if the lightless windows, cracked crenellations, and leaning towers are any indication. All is quiet, though a cold breeze blows up from below, bringing with it the scent of dust and a faint trace of rot. You are in total darkness for those without the ability to see in darkness.
The party takes the last and longest span, (60 feet) to a small courtyard, apparently the top of what was once a crenellated battlement. The buried citadel has sunk so far into the earth that the battlement is now level with the surrounding floor. That floor stretches away to the north and south, composed of a layer of treacherous, crumbled masonry, which reaches to an unknown depth. To the west looms the surviving structure of what must be the Sunless Citadel. A tower stands on the west side of the courtyard it has a wooden door facing the courtyard.
(Link to the next map will be posted on the OOC thread.)
Guessing that Xanth doesn't have Darkvision I ask him "Would you like me to light up something for you to help you see?, If so what would like to become a light? The head of your Glaive? your Belt buckle? Your Forehead?"
I will cast Light (cantrip - 1hr/60 ft Range) on what he decides to use as a light source.
I also keep well away from the Trapdoor for the time being.

Ragdor takes aim with another bolt 9 to hit, pretty sure that misses, if not then 2 damage.
OOC - I did read that we are approx 50ft above the fight? Just checking the range for spells.

With a roar Xanth swings his glaive at #3
Attack: 14 Damage: 15
Then with a flourish spins it around to bash it with the butt.
Attack: 19 Damage: 7
That may just finish off the healthy rat and the hurt one. I did go after the health one first.

Xanth rage will pass and he will lean heavily on his weapon.
"I know we just got here but could anyone help me out here."
I descend the rope, pat Xanth on the back for a job well done and (If he is hurt) cast Healing Word on him by Saying "Toughen Up" ... with that he heals 4 Hit Points.
Climb down the rope, standing at the bottom - Fine work! Fine work indeed. How badly are you injured?

Xanth is a 6 of 14 after Glynt's Healing word.
Well though rats had sharp teeth. I'm tough but if we could take a quick breather I wouldn't be upset.
Portia will also climb down, and assuming she also sees them (or they are pointed out) she will examine the humanoid footprints to see if they are all goblin sized or if some recent ones could be from the party we are tracking. (preemptive investigation check: 18)
After joining more my signature got out of hand so I am now a proud member of the extended signature club!! :)

Xanth Short Rest 10
Xanth will light that torch and lead the way carefully. He will look around the space then head for the door.
Perception 21
XANTH will carefully note unmortared edges along the floor. It is a trapdoor. (Location noted with RED lines on the map.)
Guessing that Xanth doesn't have Darkvision I ask him "Would you like me to light up something for you to help you see?, If so what would like to become a light? The head of your Glaive? your Belt buckle? Your Forehead?"
