Thanking the serving girl Victor will speak up, "Goodnight to those companions who are retiring, I am going to linger a but more and enjoy my surroundings. It might be awhile before I am able to enjoy the comforts of city living. As much as I enjoy my life here at the college I have been dreaming of going outside the walls to in person what I have only read about in my books, should be fun, though to be honest it does frighten me a bit as well."
After a couple more drinks and once everyone else is ready to call it a night victor will retire to the room, more than likely a bit more drunk.
You each retire to the room in your own time, making yourselves comfortable. The night passes uneventfully and you awaken just before dawn. When you head downstairs, the innkeeper greets you. "Morning!" he calls with a smile.
The party heads to the south gate, where there is a wagon and a steward waiting. As you approach, he smiles and holds out the reins of the oxen. "Ahh, there you are. Gundren's description of you was spot on." He smiles again. "Here you go - ready for travel. Safe journey and good luck!" he says.
"Thank you Faywin, that is most appreciated," Victor says, "as I have never done such a thing in my life. If you don't mind I will sit next to you on the bench to keep you company and take some notes on our journey. This being the first time out of the city I am looking forward to seeing with my own eyes what I have since only seen in books."
The steward shakes his head in response to Torwen. "There's no need for a map. Just follow the main road south until you reach the Triboar Trail. It will lead you to Phandelin Road. Follow that into Phandelin. Easy as pie!" he says, walking away and waving.
Victor and Faywin clamber up into the wagon, Faywin taking over the reins. The oxen are extremely docile and well-trained and begin pulling the wagon slowly down the road.
The journey down the High Road takes several days, but they pass uneventfully. You come to the turn off for the Triboar Trail and take it, heading east. The road looks peaceful enough, but you know that there are rumors of brigands and outlaws lurking along the trail.
After traveling about a half a day, your progress comes to a halt. In front of you about 50 ft ahead, blocking the road, are two dead horses. The trees and bushes are close to the edges of the road here, and each horse has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it.
Victor will get out of the wagon and start to examine the dead horses. "Fascinating, I wonder what has happened here. Kierro what have you discovered?"
As Faywin remains on the wagon, the rest of you approach the horses. Kierro, you lean down to see the congealed blood and decay of the horses. It appears to you that they've been dead about a day, and it's clear that the arrows are the cause of their death.
Victor, as you investigate, you discover that the saddlebags on the horses have been looted. Nearby on the ground you spot what appears to be an empty map case. As you move closer to the map case, Torwen approaches.
Torwen, as you near the horses and Victor as he crouches near them, your eye is drawn by a movement off to your right. As you look over, suddenly a goblin leaps out of the bushes with a tiny primal scream. There is an answering cry from the opposite side of the road.
Torwen - as you begin to move towards Victor, two goblins leap out of the bushes by the side of the road, one from each side. You see the one on the right first. He is running towards you screaming with his sword in the air, teeth bared, howling a wordless cry.
