Hello! While I have been a DM for many years, I've never done a play by post before, and I'd really like to give it a shot. I was thinking of playing through a hard cover adventure. Out of the Abyss is a suggestion, but I may also be partial to Curse of Strahd or another if others prefer.
The other thing I'd like to do is run it using only the tools on D&D Beyond. That means character creation would be limited to the free stuff with options to expand when it goes live. Starting level will be 1, looking for 4-5 players.
Please DM me any questions or if you'd like to join!
Very interested in this. Are the supplements (Volo's, SCAG...) allowed?

Ooooh, I haven't done PbP before, however I am currently doing an OotA game already online. If you're happy for someone who may have some knowledge of it, then sign me up!

The short answer is yes, IF you have access to it through D&D Beyond.
Initially that means everyone will only be using the free tools available. After the official launch date on 8/15, you'll have the option to re-roll your character using whatever tools you have access to, i.e. what you've purchased through D&D Beyond, or what I've purchased if I do the master tier subscription, which I'm not sure I'm going do to yet.
Once I've confirmed the players, I'll post a link to the campaign where everyone can join with their D&D Beyond characters, and we'll get rolling. Literally.

I don't mind if you have some knowledge, as long as you think you'll still be able to enjoy it, and not let your knowledge of the game affect your character choices.
Okay, I've sent a DM to the four of you with instructions to join the campaign. I'll leave the recruiting open for a 5th, but feel free to talk about what class/race you want to play in this thread. You can share as much information as you like, but Out of the Abyssstarts with characters thrown together, so realistically you wouldn't know much about your fellow characters in the beginning, other than maybe class/race. It might be fun to let other details of your characters come out as the game progresses.
I probably should have mentioned this earlier too, but no evil characters please. Alignments should be good or neutral. Nothing against well done evil character concepts, but I've found they work best when the campaign is built for them, and that's not what I'm doing here. Thanks!

don't worry, first time pbp also. Although big tabletop player and DM. Creating character asap and uploading (thinking of a Dwarf Monk) :p
Hey guys, I'm a quite inexperienced player (I've only played a couple games), and would like to try PbP. I'd like to play with a human fighter if possible. If not, I also have a dragonborn barbarian. Do I have to post the link for the character sheet here?
Also, I'm still not very good at creating the background/lore for my carácter, so I'm sorry if it's a bit dull.

Hi! I'm sending you a message to join the group with more information. You will need to create a character using the tools on D&D Beyond and then join the campaign link with that character. In the messages, you can see what other characters are being made.

no problem, everybody has to start somewhere !!! :)
As we have five players now, I'm going to remove the public and recruiting tags, and mark the group as private. Once we're settled on characters, we'll begin the campaign!
So for the most part you can use the dice roll feature from the reply box, but the formula above will automatically roll double damage on a crit. Just remove the space before each use of the word "roll". You can also roll advantage or disadvantage. This one is rolling advantage. To roll with neither, just remove the ".advantage" part.
For the play by post, whenever you roll an attack, please roll damage as well. I think that will help keep things moving.
Captured by the drow! You wouldn't wish this fate upon anyone, yet here you are locked in a dark cave, the cold, heavy weight of metal tight around your throat and wrists. You are not alone. Other prisoners are trapped in here with you, in an underground outpost far from the light of the sun. Your captors include a cruel drow priestess who calls herself Mistress llvara of House Mlzzrym. Over the past several days, you've met her several times, robed in silken garments and flanked by two male drow, one of whom has a mass of scars along one side of his face and neck. Mistress llvara likes to impress her will with scourge in hand and remind you that your life now belongs to her. ''Accept your fate, learn to obey, and you may survive.'' Her words echo in your memory, even as you plot your escape.
You’ve lost track of the days and nights in the Underdark,, but the four of you are being held with ten other prisoners by a contingent of drow elite warriors, loyal to Ilvara. All of your possessions and money have been taken by the drow, leaving you with nothing but your underclothes to wear. During the “day,” you and the other prisoners are split into random groups of four or five, and set to menial tasks moving rocks, cooking meals, and emptying chamber pots, all while under heavy guard, and often to the jeers and insults of the drow guarding you, and their quaggoth servants. Aside from Ilvara there are three other drow of note. Shoor, who is Ilvara’s lieutenant and current lover. Ashara, Shoor’s cousin and apprentice priest to Ilvara. And Jorlan, a skilled warrior and Ilvara’s previous lover. She discarded him after his face was scarred horribly in an incident with a black pudding.
The area where you are being kept appears to be a cave system high above a large cavern, with a walkway built into the wall leading from cave to cave. The drow reside in rooms built into stalactites hanging from the ceiling, with rope bridges leading from the stalactites to caves set into the walls. A large waterfall pours out of a section of the wall, dropping water into a murky pool far below you at the base of the cavern. Also stretched out below, between you and the bottom of the cavern, are a series of sticky spider webs, built by the giant spiders, who are loyal to the drow.
At “night” you are kept in one of the caves along the wall, a slave pen protected by an anti-magic zone, preventing you from casting any spells. This does not stop the drow from taunting you and casting spells at you from outside the pen, usually a ray of sickness or some cantrip used to weaken you into submission.
You did not all arrive together, but within a few days of each other. Some of the other prisoners have been here for over a tenday. You get the sense that prisoners don’t stick around too long before they expire from exhaustion, or are killed by the guards. Over a couple of days of working and sleeping, you get to know your fellow prisoners:
Bupiddo - a male derro. Older and a bit mad. He tends to point out how outnumbered you are versus the drow forces.
Prince Derendil - a hulking quaggoth who has a menacing look. Strangely though, he only speaks Elvish, and claims to be a gold elf prince, transformed by a curse.
Eldeth Fedrun - a female shield dwarf from Guantlygrm. She seems spirited and proud, but longs to return home.
Jimjar - a male deep gnome with a bit of a devil-may-care attitude.
Ront - a male orc. Acts mean and tough, but cowers under threat from the guards. He’s often seen bullying Eldeth.
Sarith Kzekarit - a male drow. Imprisoned for murdering a fellow drow warrior, but claims not to remember doing it. He is being held until he can be taken back to Menzoberranzan and sacrificed to Lloth.
Shuushar the Awakened - a kuo-toa who claims to be enlightened, and a complete pacifist. He believes he can return to his people and save them from their madness.
Stool - a myoconid sprout who had been captured by Sarith before Sarith himself was brought to the prison camp.
Topsy and Turvy - a brother and sister deep gnome pair. Topsy does most of the talking, while her brother just mutters and mumbles under his breath most of the time.
The adventure begins with all of you together, in chains, in the slave pen. It is almost time for the work day to begin. Three drow guards watch you from outside the locked gate of the cave entrance.
What do you want to do?
(OOG I’d like for everyone to roll 1d20 and 1d10, as well as describe any action you’d like to take)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
d20 = 19; d10 = 4.
Oorr is not comfortable at all with his wings constrained. When the guards are not watching he tries to go closer the gnome pair: " (*squeak*)Do you know where we are? "
