Kellin: From the things you have read and heard over the years, you estimate the dragon is likely young.
Hodil nods at Moira, "We should be able to scrounge up a few strapping young lads to help, but our town has suffered much, i don't want a full out battle taking place inside the town."
Danfi: Hodil points you to a building diagonally across the street, you squint your eyes and make out the sign that says 'Smithy' (OOC: It's roughly a few hours before dusk.)
Danfi heads over the street to the smithy, and walks inside to ask for Lee. If the son is there, Danfi will ask him if he has a few moments.
"I'm interested in what you know about the mountain. Are there any boulders or something similar we might hide behind to ambush the kobolds? How steep is the slope heading up towards the dragon's cave?"
After talking with Lee, Danfi will walk over to the edge of town in the direction the goblins would come from to get a quick lay of the immediate environment. perception7
Seeing Danfi leaving, Moira gets up and says to Torvin: "Also, please make sure how much we get out of this in terms of gold." She nods to Hodil, grabs her sword and joins Danfi.
At Lee's Moira leaves the speaking to Danfi. She speaks to Isaiah about the current situation and about his work. She is curious about utensils, weapons and armour.
Moira wants to see what kind of last defense could be established should the enemy come as far. She also wants to check out if there are any kind of tracks.
"Probably a young dragon then." Kellin says thoughtfully. "makes sense I suppose, older ones probably wouldn't be letting lesser beings like kobolds ride them."
After the others start leaving...
"Is there anything you can give us to aid in this fight to come?" He asks the mayor. "Anything your town has, or someone in town has, that might be able to aid us in a battle like this?" He shrugs. "Some family heirloom, like a magic blade or a ring of protection?" He doesn't expect anything, but would be looking for some aid against such a powerful enemy as a dragon, even a young one.
Torvin asks Hodil: "Just what exactly does the town want us to do? Something this involved needs clearly defined expectations for both sides. Also, it seems both I and a few of my friends would like to know what we can expect the "bounty" to be?"
Danfi: As you walk up a short man wearing a leather apron is just finishing up the head of a battleaxe and hammering it down on to a wooden shaft. He appraises it for a few moments before sitting it down and turning to you, "Lee is running an errand for me currently, but he should be back shortly. I'm his father Isaiah. What can i do for you?"
Moira: Isaiah turns when you speak and responds with, "I've been working on some weapons and armor for a few weeks with my son's help and a few others in town that can swing a hammer, last week the goblins asked for money, so it gave me a little time."He shows you two sets of scale mail, a breastplate, two long swords and two battleaxes. When you check the mountain for tracks, you find several kobold tracks leading off up the right side of the mountain.
Kellin: Hodil says, "Everything we had was taken a few weeks ago when the kobolds raided our town and took weapons and armor, though Isaiah has been working on making more, it just takes time. I'm sorry we can't help more."
Torvin: Hodil listens to your words and sighs, "We know we are asking a lot, but we need the dragon killed and the kobolds scattered or killed. As for payment, the town treasury has about 1000 gold in it, plus the money and items they took from the town. It's all yours if you can solve our problem."
Danfi tells Isaiah "We're here to solve this town's kobold and dragon problem. I'm trying to gain some understanding of what the landscape is like between here and the dragon cave. Are there places where we might be able to set up an ambush? Are there places where the terrain might give us a better chance against the kobolds, maybe like a rise on the landscape where the kobolds would have to be moving uphill when they face us, or a narrow path where they'd only be able to come at us a few at a time."
If Isaiah can't answer his questions, Danfi will wait patiently for Lee to return.
Looking over the details of Isaiah's craftsmanship Moira remarks: "I come from a carpenter family, so maybe I could help the folks around here get their housings in shape after everything settles. Just let me know if you hear from someone in need. As for the gear: Can we borrow some of the equipment for the battle to come? Would you by any chance have nets, bear traps, caltrops and other trapping gear?"
She also asks Isaiah whether there is a temple or some other establishment where she could find a brass brezier with abundant charcoal.
(OOC Is it the mountain next to Neverwinter Wood or next to the Evermoors?)
Kellin nods his head, it is as he had thought. "Not a problem, just would like to know what resources we had for this." He nods to the mayor. "I will go and check in with the others, so we can make a plan of action."
Danfi: "I have talked to my son to know enough about that, there is a rough path that winds around the mountain to the northern side, otherwise it's a slightly steep climb straight up. It shouldn't be extremely difficult though, my son used to climb it all the time."
Moira: "If it helps in your task to help this town, consider yourself welcome to any of it, as for the trapping gear, I don't make any of that. Some of the other tradesmen from the town have left because of the issues with the kobolds, so we don't have any of that in supply currently."
After hearing Isaiah's answer, Moira wants to be sure: "Do I understand correctly that the path uphill is rather narrow then and framed by the mountain slope on the left side, while on the right side one might tumble downwards if not cautious? Is the ground up until the bend to the northern part out of stone or earthen and are there any bends where you cannot see down the path very well? I am sorry for asking in such detail, but our lives might depend on this in the end."
"Also, thank you for your generosity. We might take you up on that."
(OOC: Did Isaiah say anything about the brass brezier Moira asked about?)
After hearing what the blacksmith has to say about the mountain, Danfi returns to the feast hall to find the others.
"According to the blacksmith, there are two routes up the mountain. A path winds around to the northern side of the mountain, while a more direct route involves a steep climb up the side of the mountain. We need to figure out which route the kobolds use, and find a place where we can ambush them. But, as its getting near sunset, we probably should not do that today. We don't want to be on an unfamiliar mountain when darkness falls and possibly get ambushed by the kobolds. I suggest we head out in the morning to scout the two possible routes. But, in the meantime, what do we do if the kobolds show up tonight?
(ooc) Do the tracks Moiril found head to the north or take the more direct route?
Turning to Hodil (if he is still around), he asks "When the kobolds show up each week, do they demand something immediately or do they give you a day or two to get the ransom together?"
Moira accompanies Danfi. She tells everyone that we can use the help of some fellows from the town to build the ambush and that there is some useful equipment at the blacksmith.
"So I guess we will be doing some dragon hunting. Has anyone of you had experience with killing dragons? And what have you accomplished so far during your adventuring, Danfi?", asks Moira sitting down at the new table.
In any case, before going to sleep Moira will check on her familiar or try to conjure one if she does not have one.
Alto has been following people around town, lending whatever assistance he can to whoever needs it. Basically he’s trying to reassure people that they won’t be murdered on accident.
"We don't know when the goblins will come back next, but, it should be in the next couple days. I suggest we wait out of site in the feast hall tonight in case they choose to show up tonight. Tomorrow, we can scout out the mountain side to see how we can get up to them, and where there might be a good route for an ambush on them. We also need to think about what we are going to do if they show up tonight. I can think of three options: (1) have the town pay the ransom this week, so we have time to set up a trap for the next trip down the mountain; (2) If they show up, we confront them and chase them away; (3) If they show up, we have the town tell them they'll need a couple hours to get everything together. In that time we sneak out of town in a different direction and circle around and ambush them."
"I tend towards the third options, though it is the most risky one. No risk, no reward, I say.", replies Moira and smacks her pint of ale back on the table.
She adds: "I also think that there is no need that we all go. A bigger group is easier to spot. This reconnaissance mission seems a good match for our forest lovers here.", and points at Danfi and Kellin. "Do you think you can handle that early at dawn?"
Moira puts a hand on Alto's shoulder and mentions with a grin: "I heard you are already well acquainted with the townsfolk." She continues in a more serious manner: "This will be of much help when we rally the troops promised by Hodil tomorrow. I do not want to build traps with someone I cannot get a read on. Besides, who's to trust everyone here. The dragon might have spies already looking for us. Even in adolescence those vicious abominations ought not to be underestimated."
(OOC: Does Moira expect it to be a moonlit night or a darker one?)
"Well I can have my familiar help keep a watch out, and to warn us if the kobolds start coming down the mountain." Kellin tells the others. "If anyone else would help with that watch, we should have some warning of any incoming kobolds well ahead of their arrival."
Torvin will wait at the inn while the others do their 'running around town. If Hodil is still there he will ask another question: "Can you tell me how many Kobolds normally come to collect the ransom?"
He will then wait for his comrades to return and see what kind of a plan they can come up with.
Smiling shyly at Moira, Alto nods. “They seem like nice people, just scared for the most part.” Looking around at Torvin he replies, “I can take a watch.”
