After a few quick remarks are traded across the table, the tavern falls quiet, the only sound being the pitter-patter of a light drizzle that’s formed over the hours, and the muffled voices of the Lieutenant and the witnesses in the interrogation room. The witnesses enter and exit the back room, some only talking for a minute or two while others like the halflings take a whole half-hour before emerging with tears on their faces. When the bartender exits, he stops and mouths “Thank you” to Zee before returning to the bar to begin cleaning up the glass bottle shards.
Eventually, the five of you are called for interrogation. You are unshackled and escorted by three guards, who present to you no opportunity for escape. Entering the back room, you see the elf Lieutenant scribbling on some sort of report. He yawns as his blood-shot baggy eyes gaze up towards you. With a sigh, he starts talking.
“I know what you’re going to say. All self-defense, right? You were just minding your business when you were attacked out of nowhere. And I would be inclined to agree. However…”
The Lieutenant turns the report so that you can read it. One section details the amount of weapons you were carrying combined, another detailing how the three dead men were killed.
“As you can see from the impressive pile of weapons in the tavern, the lot of you were packing two crossbows, two shortbows, six daggers, two rapiers, two hammers, a mace, and two shields. Who does that? Do you fear for your safety that much?
The Lieutenant then stares at Arikon, Jeb, and Berdach, before pointing at the second section.
“Also, take a look at the state of the bodies we just carried out. One is completely withered away, probably due to necromatic magic, one has been killed with a single stab to the back, and one has his entire chest caved in, probably due to some force bolt. Our witnesses say you three caused these violent and brutal deaths.”
He then turns to Zee.
“They also say you were partly responsible for causing the fight, adding fuel to fire by goading the original instigator. And look at the result of that, just to have some fun, huh?”
He leans back on his chair, shrugging.
“Please, I want to hear it from your point of view. What happened? Why did you do it? After all this, I deserve a proper explanation.”
"I’m a traveler who often has valuable crafting goods and supplies. I thought it in me best interest to be armed well. Some idiot menaced me with a table leg, but I didn’t try to kill ‘me. Just give ‘em a little knock on the head, make him rethink his life choices."
He points to his shield.
"Besides, I carry that everywhere. It’s me holy symbol, the symbol of Moradin."

"And someone's already trying to claim 'religion' to get themselves out of this. Well, dwarf, you shouldn't worry too much about our prisons. If we try and convict you, we'll send you back to your dwarven homelands. I hear their justice is quite...swift and retributive. "
(OOC: We are using Greyhawk deities, Moradin is good).

And If ye send me back ‘ta me homeland so they ken convict me of brawling, they’ll laugh in yer face and have a nice drunken brawl to celebrate me homecoming."

"Hah, it's good to see that the dwarfs still have the short tempers they are so famous for. However, it's not you I'm worried about- you didn't kill anyone or start a fight. You probably were just having 'fun' in your own strange, dwarf way. No, it's the rest of you lot that should be worried."
Arikon twicthed as he listened to the elaborations of the lieutenant. '...the chest caved in by some force bolt.', regrettably that sounded pretty much like what happened to the man with the brass-knuckles. He was sorry for the man, he kept insisting on attacking.
"Sir, you have to believe me. As soon as this fight started - for reasons unknown to me - this... this brute attacked me for no reason at all. I tried to reason with him, told him back off but he wouldn't listen. Look at the bruises I received. I was certain he was going to kill and so I retaliated as a last resort. I swear I had no intention to kill him.", he pleaded with his captors. (Persuasion18 adv. Roll 21)
Jeb smiles at the at Lieutenant. He says, "I was just enjoying a casual game of cards when all of the hubbub broke out. The world can be a very dangerous place, Lieutenant. It helps to be able to defend one's self when needed, hence the assortment of weapons you gathered."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The Lieutenant looks at the bruised form of Arikon. “Yes, we recovered the brass knuckles from his corpse. The man has quite a reputation on the streets, and it seems like you’ve suffered because of it. Perhaps you are telling the truth.” He then turns to Jeb, glancing at his dirtied face and blackened eye from Prestidigitation.
“You also look like you took quite a beating as well.

He doesn’t notice the effect of the magical spell. The Lieutenant grunts non-committedly. “You play a dangerous game when you gamble with those fellows. It’s a miracle they didn’t jump you earlier. Okay, I believe you too. Pointedly ignoring the half-orc Berdach, he then turns to Zee. “The bartender’s put a good word for you when I questioned him, saying you handed him your weapon and may have helped save his life. However, you helped start the fight as well. Tell me, why shouldn’t I lock you up?
(Zee, depending on your response in your next post, roll a Charisma check using a skill that reflects your dialogue).
When Berdach is finally given the chance to talk he says "I'm an acrobat with Zantorini's troupe. I sonetimes get sent out as an advance scout to make check areas for us to perform. The road is a dangerous place when you travel by yourself. "
"As far as tonight goes, I had nothing to do with the fight starting. After it broke out, I was simply trying to leave when I saw someone threatening the two hafling bards with a broken bottle, so I went to their aid."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Listening to it all Zee waits his turn. The gears turning all the while. "Well, seeing as this is an inn that houses a lot of adventurers journeying through the last major settlement to the south, it makes sense that many of us would be armed for the road. I did not see anywhere to deposit our weapons in the town or this inn so they stayed with us. As for the so called starting of a fight, all I did was clarify an insult I did not make. I never once insisted violence. The men who died were in fact the aggressors. I did my best to help the innocent and tried to bring order to this chaos. It seems like some were in a foul mood and only looking for a fight this night." Persuasion: 19
The Lieutenant listens attentively to each of the testimonies, nodding to the explanations. When Zee finishes, he speaks to everyone.
“Here’s what’s going to happen. I could arrest you for murder and inciting violence and throw you into the slammer.
However, you have the witnesses and,” he looks at Arikon, “the money for lawyers to fight for an acquittal. To be honest, Doveheart’s jail is already filling to the brim, given the current unrest among our human population.
The Lieutenant shakes his head.
“No, that’s a bad idea. We already arrested the original instigator as well as the man who attacked you, dwarf. They shall do, justice has been served.
The second option, and the one I shall choose, is to just let you go. You’ve got lucky today. If another watchmen were to have been in my seat, he might’ve taken you away without even speaking a word to you. Very well. Everyone may leave...except for the half-orc.”
The door shuts as Murmen, Jeb, Zee, and Arikon exit the room. Berdach remains, and the Lieutenant leans forwards on his seat and suddenly grabs your arm.
“You say you’re with Zantorini’s troupe? Liar. I know exactly which troupe you were a member of, and now they’re awaiting trial for murder and resisting arrest. It turns out that when the guard caught them stealing, they didn’t give up easily. One innocent and four watchmen, along with two in your troupe, are dead because of that.”
The Lieutenant lets go of your arm, but continues staring intensely at you.
“We got a report from the capital, Darvian, for a half-orc that looks like just you. A 200 gp bounty on his head as well. So why am I not arresting you at this moment?”
He pauses for a second.
“Those halflings you saved? I know them well- their music has helped me get through some tough times. They wouldn’t like to see you in chains. They said exactly that when I questioned them. Understand this. We never met, we never saw each other. I’m leaving you out of my report. Get out of the city before the watch changes.”
The Lieutenant pushes you to the door. As you leave, he says one last thing.
“But remember, until you’ve left Athetome, you’ll never be safe.”
(Please wait a bit before posting the next one. I have some more to say but not the time to do so. Also, please tell me in the OOC thread, how are you enjoying the adventure so far? Be sure to tell me what you liked, what you didn't, and any tips you have to improve my DMing. Thanks!)
Berdach joins the rest of the group back inside the tavern’s main room, where the guards wordlessly return the pile of weapons to their rightful owners. After they are done, the Lieutenant leads the guards out of Night Hollow Inn, their tramping boots fading into the distance.
Looking around, you see that the tavern's furniture is already starting to be replaced. Spare tables and chairs are brought out of storage, while the sound of sawing wood echoes from the carpenter shop across the street. The bartender is back to his usual business of cleaning the bar, looking quite shaken as if he’s trying to get his mind off his near-death experience.
At the bar, two men sit, the only people in the tavern other than you and the bartender. One is a stout dwarf with a large mane of brown hair, in the process of chugging down a foaming mug. Sitting next him to is a tall human wearing fine chain armor and a scabbard at his hip. If he’s some sort of warrior though, his graying hairs reveal that he is way past his prime. Spotting you, the dwarf drops his serious expression and smiles, beckoning you over with his hand.
“That was quite some fight, wasn’t it? Come, join us for a drink!”

Jeb approaches the bar. He says to Murmen, "Well friend, dwarf. I'm never one to linger in another's debt. What is your drink of choice? My treat in appreciation of your assistance from earlier.”
Jeb produces a gold coin from his purse. He passes it to the barkeep as he says, "A mulled wine for myself, whatever Murmen desires, and the rest is yours friend. On account of the trouble from earlier.”
Berdach was visibly shaken when he rejoined the rest of the group. His first instinct was to get out of town as quickly as possible, but was worried the guard might be waiting around the corner to nab him.
When the offer of a drink was made, he decided to take one last drink before he hit the road again. Dam' little ale to be found on the highway.
On his way to the bar, he took a moment to check out the purse he nabbed and see what he'd gotten for his troubles.

The relief Arikon experienced when the guards had finally left the inn was hard to describe. Solemnly he swore to himself that he would never be that careless again. The young sorcerer, still shaken by what had happened, heard the dwarf's invitation and although his appetite for another drink had vanished, he nonetheless joined the others at the bar.
"It's a pleasure to meet you. This time not in chains.", he greeted all of them again. "The name is Arikon Kynophos."
