Under raging storm clouds, a lone figure stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. The vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stares down a sheer cliff at the village below. A cold, bitter wind spins dead leaves about him, billowing his cape in the darkness.
Lightning splits the clouds overhead, casting stark white light across him. Strahd turns to the sky, revealing the angular muscles of his face and hands. He has a look of power—and of madness. His once handsome face is contorted by a tragedy darker than the night itself.
Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The winds howling increases as Strahd turns his gaze back to the village. Far below, yet not beyond his ken, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd’s face forms a twisted smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they have come all according to his plan. He, the master of Ravenloft, will attend to them.
Another lightning flash rips through the darkness, its thunder echoing through the castle is towers. But Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind—or perhaps a lone wolf—fills the midnight air.
Hello gothic horror fans! I recently purchased Curse of Strahd and am running it on here. In addition the the main story, I've added in the small mini-adventure of my own; Barrow Hill! The following states the rules for my campaign.
1. First of all, there are rules for character creation. To add a gothic theme to the campaign, I will allow the death domain for the cleric class. In addition, when choosing a trinket, you may choose a trinket from the Gothic Trinket Table found here. Sadly, I concluded that the Haunted One background unavailable. You may use any race from the Player's Handbook, though options from EEPC, SCAG, and VGtM are permitted (except for the monstrous race options from VGtM). But any race that has a flying speed at 1st-level is prohibited (sorry aarakocra fans!). Generate your ability scores using the Point Buy method or Standard Array method. Please choose your equipment as a combination of your class and background.
2. Next, I need to know how familiar with the lands of Barovia. Please list one of the following:
A. You've never played CoS before.
B. You've played CoS as an adventurer (if so, list how many times you've played it).
C. You've been the DM in a CoS game.
3. To submit a character, please start your character at 1st-level. Then, list the following information about your character.
Devious serpent folk devoid of compassion, yuan-ti manipulate other creatures by arousing their doubts, evoking their fears, and elevating and crushing their hopes. From remote temples in jungles, swamps, and deserts, the yuan-ti plot to supplant and dominate all other races and to make themselves gods.
Backstory: Emre was a priestess living in Bryn Shander, administering the rites of Kelemvor. After a horrible and deadly accident was wrongfully blamed on Emre, she was banished from her home in Icewind Dale and wandered the northern wilds for a decade before stumbling across a warren of caves that formed a temple to an old deity, complete with ancient necromantic rites that had been long forgotten.
You may use any race from the Player's Handbook, though options from EEPC, SCAG, and VGtM.
Double checking since the second half of the sentence seems incomplete, does this means VGtM options are indeed allowed? Cause I could totally go for a VGtM race.
backstory: Therfice was a soldier in a dwarven army before deserting and surviving in the northern mountains for 100 years and has just now begun to interact with society and as such has a poor understanding of modern customs

Her journey eventually led her to the Sword Coast and Waterdeep. She has been keeping a low profile since then, spending most of her time trying to find a way to better control her magic.

I've never played nor DM'd Strahd (whether 5e or the older editions) but always wanted to (especially before I subject my own group to it!)
I was thinking half-drow paladin of Eilistraee, goddess of song and moonlight... don't have a lot of time to flesh her or him out right now (more likely tonight), but if you think she'd be a good fit, let me know and I'll mock him or her up. And if anyone has any ideas on how the characters met each other, I'm all ears.

As stated, neither played nor DM'd CoS before.
Valanthe Galanodel, Half-Elf (drow)
Paladin and ACOLYTE of Eilistraee (Modified Acolyte Background, switching Religion for Performance to match the lore of Eilistraee)
Chaotic Good
Valanthe was left in the hands of the sisterhood of the goddess Eilistraee as a baby and grew up in the faith. She left her temple to learn of the wider world and to spread her faith to others letting them know that Lady Silverhair, the Dark Dancer, means to bring good into the world and save the lost children of Lloth by bringing them back into the light.
Apparently CoS has lost some of its popularity (I was expecting a few more people to post). The campaign starts soon!

Backstory: Thpas was sold into slavery as a child after the Devils had taken over the nine hells. He was enslaved by a greater pit fiend he only knew as "The Overgeneral" who had seemed to take favor with him. Thpas would beg and plead for years for the opportunity to live as he had heard other did, on the material plane. Eventually, he had curried enough favor for his master to allow him freedom to live out his days in freedom...under one condition: Thpas must sign his soul to The Overgeneral for eternity. Thpas relented, as a short life of adventure against an eternity of torment was well worth risking when the alternative is servitude and the permanence of nothingness thereafter.

I had mentioned that the Haunted One background was unavaliable.

@DungeonLord58 - if we end up taking on a fighter or two, I mightmake Valanthe a DEX-based paladin as it would be more thematically-appropriate given she's a half-elf and a follower of the goddess Eilistraee. If no one else is STR based, I'll make her a more traditional STR-based paladin. Just wanted to throw that out there so that you are aware of it beforehand.
