We are playing Icewind Dale, and my players are all now at level 5. The Chardalyn Dragon has been unleashed, but they decided to head to Sunblight's fortress and made some pretty darn good Persuasion checks and managed to talk their way inside.
I've got two new players wanting to join with a Centaur Fighter and an Air Genasi Barbarian.
Any suggestions how I can creatively write them into the story?
It's not especially creative, but perhaps the new fighter and barbarian were captured by Xardorok and are in the cells. Or perhaps they managed to play nice with Grandolpha and she's hiding them, hoping to use them for her coup.
Thanks for the tip, I also thought that Xardorok or Grandolpha might be trying to get them to fight each other for entertainment. That way they will be fully kitted out, too.
I would not worry about it. That is the player’s job. It is their job to decide what their character’s background is, why their character is in Icewind Dale, why they want to adventure with the existing players, etc.
Essentially it is up to them to write themselves into the story to the extent they care to. Just answer any questions about your world their character would reasonably know and that’s that.
Yeah this is absolutely the players' domain in my book. Tell them the story up to now, give them some options for when it would make sense for them to appear, and let them run with it. If they defer to you, then at that point you can decide their exact circumstances, but first giving them a chance to place themselves in the world is a good thing.
Captured is an option but also the chaldaryn dragon is a big enough deal that other adventurers may have responded and they may have similarly come to the fortress to investigate and talked their way in. Great minds think alike and all. Personally I'd ask them why they would have come to the fortress and run with that.
