I have a dnd campaign coming up and there are some potential homebrew/3rd party classes that my players might use. So, I wanted to do some tests to see the best way I can jury rig the character sheet to make it work. Long story short one of the subclasses gives spellcasting using the cleric spell list and I decided that the fighter was the closest class and I might be able to use the eldritch knight subclass and give it access to the cleric spell list somehow.
the first thing I tried was to add a homebrew feat to try and give it access to the cleric spell list but that doesn't work because the feat just wants you to pick a specific spell from the classes list.
So then I figured that all I need to do is quickly edit the eldritch knight subclass for the fighter. So I copy the eldritch knight and I understand that it has access to the wizard spell list but nowhere in there can I find a spot where it says/gives access to the wizard spell list. Eventually, I figure out that I just need to put cleric in the additional spell list box. However, When I do that the character no longer has any spell available to learn in the character sheet. (I eventually figured out that the issue was just that the subclass is created without anything in the additional spell list box and after I add it in it needs to wait the 10-20 minutes to update)
So then I decide that I need to create a new subclass. So I create a new one with the same spellcasting settings as before and now it doesn't show spellcasting in the sheet at all. So I google it a bit and realize that I need a feature titled "spellcasting" for the spells to show up.
So now it works but seriously, why is this SO COMPLICATED? I eventually figured it out but it took me forever. Not even full class stuff, just simply trying to get a subclass to use an additional spell list.
One thing I didn't quite figure out though, what is the spell prepare type box exactly? I googled it but didn't see anything that explained it
The homebrewer isn’t actually a homebrewer at all. It is the same official system the Devs use, only they locked some stuff behind admin access. (The spell prepare type box is one of those.)
To accomplish what you wanted you only needed to set three things under Basic Information: “Can cast Spells” to yes, set a “Spellcasting Ability,” and set the “Spell list” to Cleric. Then you needed to add the Spellcasting class feature and after that you MUST re-save the entire Homebrew using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button located under Basic Information.
