I'm making a character that's half wood elf, half water genasi. I couldn't figure out manual customization and making homebrew is really complicated to me, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm using GMBinder's Hybridizing to figure out traits and such and I know exactly which traits from which parents are gonna be passed down, I just cannot for the life of me figure out homebrew.
Dominant Race: Wood Elf Recessive Race: Water Genasi

Wouldn't some of the regular elf traits show up in there too, like the Dexterity +2, Fey Ancestry, Trance, etc?
+2 Dex, +1 Wis, +2 Con alone is really unbalanced. That’s a whole lot of ASIs at character creation. I would seriously recheck your notes and figure out what all they’re actually sposta be. Standard these days is (+2/+1) or (+1/+1/+1) to whatever ability scores you want.
Age is typically no longer considered an actual “trait” anymore, just a description thing.
Languages are typically condensed down to just Common +1, so two languages instead of four in this case.
Acid Resistance, Amphibious, Darkvision, Fey Ancestry, Keen Senses, and Mask of the Wild is a lot. As a DM I would make you pear that list down a little bit. If I were you I would check in with my DM and make sure they’re okay with all of that before creating the race.
I’ll help you build this however you want, but I just don’t want to see you do extra work for no reason. Check in with your DM and get final approval on your idea first. Then I’ll help you put together whatever they sign off on. Deal?

The +2 CON would be the Genasi dominant trait, but this character is recessive Genasi, so only the +1 WIS from the Water Genasi would apply.
Darkvision is an Elf recessive trait, but this character is dominant elf, so this would not apply. Darkvision is also a new water genasi trait and isn't mentioned in that Hybridizing document. Legacy water genasi don't have darkvision so 🤷♂️
Basically it's jus a wood elf, sans darkvision, trance, and elf weapon training in favor of acid resistance and can breathe underwater but no swim speed.
As long as their DM approves of it I’ll help ‘em build it however they want. But I would be remiss if I didn’t encourage seeking DM approval for any outside homebrew.
Dm has approved! And darkvision has been removed as what Mairondil makes perfect sense! Document that I sent earlier should have all things corrected so here you go!

Okay then. The easiest thing to do would be to start with a Wood Elf as your template. That’ll give you most of what you want right off the bat without needing to do anything at all. All you’ll have to do is delete the Darkvision trait and add Acid Resistance and Amphibious.
Adding Amphibious is the easiest since all it involves is adding a “Granted” trait with that name that includes the words “You can breath both air and water.” In both the Description and Snippet fields. It’s that simple.
Adding Acid Resistance is only a little more complicated. You would create a “Granted” trait with the name Acid Resistance and in the Description and Snippet Field you would enter “You have Resistance to Avid Damage.” Then you would add the following Modifier:
Modifier: Resistance->Subtype: Acid
After saving the modifier you would re-save the Trait. Then, under Basic Information for the whole Subrace you would name it Half Wood Elf, Half Water Genasi, look for the field labeled “Race Group” and reset it to blank and then re-save the whole subrace. Done.
Oh, shoot. You’re right. I forgot about that. So start with the elf as the base, delete those two traits, and then delete the rest of the subraces. Same end result more or less. It would be prettier if they transferred all the subrace traits to the base race, but way more work. This way it’ll be functional and simple at least.

It might be more complicated than that. Darkvision and Trance are elf traits, not wood elf traits.
