One of my player are playing a druid and asked about squirrels. It got me wondering, no where have I seen the stats for a squirrel but yet seen a few spells referense it for uses. I looked at the homebrew section and found most of them lacking. So I made my own version and are looking for feedback on it, since I will try and make more homebrew creations and publish them. While I understand that many probably using a reskinned rat I felt that was a bit boring and I like to have things clear. The link for the fearsom beast is : https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/592224-squirrel Please take a look and give me any feedback you have :)
Are they really? I kind of feel they win in the short sprint to get to the tree yea, but put one on to run 100ft and a human is problably faster no?
Over enough distance, humans can outpace many animals due to our abilities to sweat and to eat/drink while continuing to move. But most encounters aren’t going to last long enough for the squirrels to need a break. People would lose track of the squirrel long before that. I would give them 40 move and 40 climb. I watch them escape my dogs several times/day.
My only query is the challenge rating; pretty sure it should be at least 90+, I have tried everything to stop squirrels emptying my bird feeders and nothing works, they cannot be stopped. 😡

City rats are like totally different animals. They are like the megafauna siblings of regular rats. If squirrels were hanging out in urban areas, they'd be bigger, nastier, and greasier too.

Actually, squirrels do live in urban areas, and they look to be a little bigger than rats, but a lot of that is floof.
Suburban squirrels are generally floofier than their urban cousins, especially in the tail. Suburban squirrels often live in trees so they need the insulation and the ability to look bigger by displaying their tails to confuse predators. But underneath all that floof they are much scrawnier than they appear.
City squirrels often live underground so they need to be a little sleeker than their suburban cousins. And they’re usually gray instead of brown/tan.
"Floofier". I see you are getting into the scientific terms on me. While I would think a city rat deserves more hit points than 1d4-1 too, I will concede that much of a squirrel is floof, though. In any case, though, I would pick a squirrel in a foot race or climbing battle.

Oh, I did not need to. I was one of the first few folks to watch that video when it posted. I generally like Mark Rober, but I was ecstatic when I saw that. Squirrels are truly amazing and ridiculous.

did you tweak the one found here?
https://www.5esrd.com/gamemastering/monsters-foes/monsters-by-type/beasts/squirrel/
Indeed I did. Also looked at the rat and some other homebrew for reference and ideas.
I love it! 2 things though:
1. AC should be 11 I think (10+DEX mod.) unless you want to make it different.
2. I feel like squirrels should be faster, mean, they can outrun any human! Maybe a 40ft movement speed and 20 climb?
D&D is a game for nerds... so I guess I'm one :p

Squirrels are about twice as fast as rats, who have a movement of 20. I would say squirrel speed/climbing should be 35.
https://wiux.org/read/squirrels-vs-rats/#:~:text=Rats are fast, don't,how fast someone can run.
Also, squirrels are bigger than rats, so they should have more HP.

Other than those two tweaks, this is a great gift for a forest-loving forest druid. Nice job!
Living in a suburban area I have squirrels in my yard and see rats at work in the city. They are of comparable size overall.
