”That I don’t know, Bow, but I do have the spell ready to allow me to talk with them. I haven’t given much thought to what I should say, though, so I will probably pass the magic to someone else in our group who would rather do the talking,” answers Randall.
Looking over to Petcan, he asks, “Are you willing to be our negotiator?”
The tunnel winds a little as it ascends the remaining 40 feet or so to the surface, exiting from another rocky outcrop further down the beach from the one you entered through. Less than an hour's travel down the beach some huts can be seen, a few on the beach and some mixed in among the trees. Some activity can be spotted at this distance, a few natives moving among the huts.

”Right, then, shall we approach and when we get close, Petcan, I will bless you with the gift of Tongues? Or does anyone need further rest first?” asks Randall.

“Hello! My name is Petcan and these are my friends. We’ve arrived recently on the other side of the island. We want to be good neighbors. But there are many strange things here. We hope you can explain them to us.”
"Yes. I am Shangu." A man wearing a stone hammer at his waist gestures to several other men and women. "Invite your friends. Come and partake." Each of the men and women are bearing a variety of dishes and platters containing simple foods of fish and fruit. "We have gifts of friendship." You also notice reed baskets, clay pots, and several items of clothing among what is being carried by the many men and women approaching you. There must be dozens of them.

“That’s generous of you. Your friendship is most appreciated. It seems almost like you were expecting visitors. Probably from the ones who ran after our undortunate encounter earlier? I hoped we could explain. We were attacked by the flowers from the hole.”
Zenodor will subtly cast Detect Magic before stepping forward and joining Petcan and the others. With the effect of the spell he will have a look around, especially at the pots and gifts offered.

Randall:
Smiling and nodding and trying to remain unobtrusive, Randall watches the interaction with the natives and tries to determine if any of them are being deceptive (feeding us poison in the fruit, etc.)

Their actions and mannerisms that you now observe seem genuine and lead you to believe that the shouting from the last encounter was probably not meant as an aggressive attack but some kind of warning.
"Yes. The Purplewraths are dangerous. Narah is shamed and hides in her hut."

Assuming Petcan has translated the gist of it for the group, Zenodor suggests asking them if anything ever comes back out if the pit (i.e.should we go down and investigate), or if they would like us to try to find the source of the plants (some lair/seed area in the forest perhaps?). Perhaps if we offer to do a service for them, they will be grateful and peacefully share the island with the new colonists.
Through talking with them you learn they never spend a night in the forest and usually travel in groups when exploring it, which they seldom do. They don't know of anything ever coming back out of the pit and will be even more grateful if you have a way to deal with the Purplewraths.
If the other party members continue to hang back some of the natives will bring the food and gifts to them. They are smiling, friendly, and genuinely welcoming towards the party.

“Of course, assuming they’re talking types. I have a knack with people, assuming they don’t run away or fight.” Petcan shrugs.

Petcan will nod to Randal and begin his approach. Should the natives attempt to attack or run, he’ll cast hypnotic pattern
But when they can get close, he’ll wait for Randall to cast Tongues before calling out a greeting
