“Let me get that Singe.” Perrin then pours 5 Points on Lay on Hands into Singe.
He’ll then look at Polly “Polly. You can’t come with us into the mines. You’re very weak and exhausted right now. You need to rest. And I want you to understand that I’m telling you that you can’t come not because you’re a child but because you NEED TO REST. You can’t go in without your full strength. And if anyone else was in your situation I’d tell them the same thing. The best adventures know when their bodies are at their limits and need to rest. You cannot be a great adventure of you don’t listen to your body and rest when it needs it. Do you understand why you can’t go with Polly?” Perrin says attempting to make her understand but not sound condescending or insincere. He’s speaking to her as an equal and that this is just what is best for her to do.
"No!" Polly's bottom lip quivered. "Singe said I could! I wanna go with Singe!" Her eyes darted from person to person. "I'm sorry I did magic! I don't do it again, I promise! Mr. Drippy will keep me safe, and I'll do everything I'm told, and I'll stay behind everyone! I don't want to stay here alone! Please don't punish me! I'll never do magic again!" Her eyes fill with tears, threatening to spill over onto her cheeks.
"Little one," Zamar says, walking over and puling her into a hug. "You are not being punished. And you do not have to stop doing magic. You just need to listen to what your body is telling you. And that means no magic until you are fully recovered. Mr. Drippy would keep you safe and you would be an asset to the team, but only when you are rested. Singe did say could explore a dungeon, but he meant when you were well. You want us to talk *to* you and not about you, right? Well, I am talking to you and treating you as one of us. That means you get to have your say and I get to have mine and we try to come to an agreement. Do you want to talk?"
With tears streaming down her face, Polly gives Singe a glare. With a low voice, she says, "I hate you. Why do adults always lie?" She flops back down on her bed roll, sobbing. "Leave me alone! Just go away!"
“Maybe she should come,” Lera said softly. “Our two options are we can either leave her alone where she may or may not practice more magic and exhaust herself further, or she can come along and we can keep an eye on her. Come on dad, she’s a sorcerer. You and I both know what that means.”
"The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchett
"Lera, thank you for your input, but I am trying to make a larger point with Polly right now, and it is important. After we are done talking, if you still want to make your case, I am happy to listen."
He turns back to Polly, "I will not go away. Unless you want to be treated like a child, again. And then I will resume just telling you things instead of asking you for your thoughts and feelings. I am not lying and I have no intention of ever lying to you. I thought I made that clear last night. Do you want to be seen as one of us? Or do you want to be seen as E's little sister who needs to be sheltered and protected?"
"I'm already being treated like a kid," Polly sobbed into her bedroll, slightly muffled. "That's all anyone's said since I got here. What to do with Polly? He asked if I wanted to go," she said glaring at Singe again. "But it was a lie. He wasn't really going to let me go. None of you will. You just want to leave me here, alone."
“Polly, you won’t be up here alone. Grasalfan will be up here with you. And what about Mr. Bun. Someone needs to watch him and I don’t think unicorn bunnies like the dark very much.” Perrin says
"We want you with us, Little One, but not in your current state. Singe did not lie to you. He was careless with his words, to be sure. And I can see how you would have interpreted them at way. I wish we had some kind of truth spell to prove to you the sincerity of our intentions and words. Ask me anything. Anything at all. I will answer honestly no matter how uncomfortable. I want you to believe me and trust me. I want you to know that we all want you with us. Lera and I were prepared to walk away from Scarlet Dawn if they tried to send you away. I do not know how else to prove to you that I am on your side. But being a friend, partner, teammate or hat have you does not mean giving someone everything they want. Ask Lera. I assure you, she did not get everything she wanted growing up. I gave in far more than most would say was wise, but I held the line on occasion. And when I did, she knew i was serious and that it was important."
At this point, Polly buries her head in the bed roll and does not respond. Zamar sits with her and rubs her back and try to suggest with his eyebrows that everyone else talk elsewhere.
Singe looks up from Polly's spellbook, "We need everyone present, this is going to be a trial of our combined strengths; Lera, you must come." Singe goes back to writing. After about ten minutes he places the papers next to Polly, on the top of the stack is Fire Bolt, clearly written on the top is "Read Me First" in Singe's handwriting. Singe leaves the flying machine and casts mage armor, no flames appear, it is simply done.
"The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchett
Perrin, understanding that Zamar needs some alone with Polly will simply say before leaving, "I love you, Polly. You're like the child I've always wanted. Just know; whatever happens, I'll always love you and I'll always protect you; even if it seems like I'm being the bad guy that won't let you do anything. It's because I don't know what I would do if I lost you. I've already lost the rest of my family. I can't lose anyone in my new one now." He'll then leave the aircraft and sit on the bottom of the steps waiting for the others to arrive.
Woe bends her knees then lies flat on the ground, to be at the same height as the little creatures. She tries to talk to them. First in common, then in gnomish. "Hi little guys, what are you doing here? Is something commanding you?" Not really expecting an answer when she can see how the creatures are working away at the jungle, she sits up and pulls out her lute. She plays a quick Irish jig, something happy and upbeat.
They do seem to respond to the music, working at a quicker, more upbeat pace, but something large moves in the jungle, weaving through these creatures at the sudden sound.
At the sight of this, Dapple, Woe, Koll, and Shanolia quickly find places to hide in the area surrounding them. (Stealth rolls 23,24,25,26)
As the four of then split up and take concealment, they get a glimpse of what's coming their way. With twelve long legs, this monodrone looks to be heavily modified. It looks as though its eyeball has been torn from its socket and encased in cold iron. The small creatures all scatter as it runs by, but then feel compelled to follow it to continue their work. Jutting out from the center eyeball are four long metallic antennae, they twist and turn as if commanding the creatures to resume their work. It stays in the area, looking for the source of the previous sound. (Rolled 1 on initiative)
Seeing the modron who seems to be controlling these poor, enslaved creatures, Dapple doesn't even pause to consider the consequences of his action. With a feral roar, he leaps from his hiding place at the modron, driving the point of his blade straight for the core of the alien creature. His steel strikes true and he twists it in and jerks it free again as he lands, facing it.
[Attack: 22, Damage: 11 with Dread Ambusher bonus]
"Curse this blasted feline,"Shanolia sighs to herself. Pulling her loaded crossbow over her shoulder, she steps out from behind the tree that she's using as cover and takes aim. Releasing a deep breath, the bolt flies from the weapon and embeds itself into the construct's metallic shell. As quickly as she emerged, she ducks back behind the tree to hide once more.
Seeing his teammates spring to the attack, Koll sees no other option but to join them. He strikes out with both fists. The first connects (19+5=24) on one of its long legs, just a glancing blow, but Koll feels that the incorporeal claws he sees on his hands actually slash the creature and do it some damage (Damage 1+5=6.) He misses with his second attack as he tries to avoid being trampled by the thing.
Woe shouts at the monodrone: "You darned, sluggish moron!" She weaves magic into her words. The modron feels the pain and is a little more sluggish in his movements. Then she takes a few steps backwards, the creature always in her view.
