"Well, people, what do we do? I'm feeling a bit tired, and I still want my dagger back, but if you think we should get to the next room quickly, I can always come back for it later." Velmine says, while also putting the one dagger she had left and her shortsword away.
The longer we stay, the more trouble there could be. But we shouldn’t rush head-first into everything. We should gather our supplies, and think about what we do next, instead of rushing ahead. Baik says, nodding along to his own words.
"You're gonna summon your bird just before we have to cross that room with poisonous gas? Isn't that just what killed him the last time? I was planning on summoning one of my creatures once we're across that room and know we don't have to come back again." Velmine comments, just before she walks to where the Gelatinous Cube was to find her dagger. (Assuming the Sickening Radiance is out right now.)
"He can be tucked away in a safe space, a pocket of the Shadowfell," explains Eiren. "That is where he rests. I can call him forth or send him there quite easily, with little more than a thought; but if his physical form is destroyed here in this world, I must first perform the ritual to summon him."
"Yeah, you're right, I forgot about that. I can't do that with mine, so sometimes it's hard to remember. Anyways, I can use that rest, so let's do it." Velmine responds, while still searching for her dagger.

Eiren spends his time burning incense, then toward the end of the hour uses the incense to summon his familiar back to himself. Qu'oth materializes gently this time, unfolding out of thin air like a flower. The bird's plumage is distinctly different this time—a great horned owl, with orange eyes that pierce the darkness.
A short rest is a period of downtime, at least 1 hour long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds.
A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character’s level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total (minimum of 0). The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character regains some spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest, as explained below.
My interpretation of this is that anyone standing guard is not able to participate in the short rest. As keeping guard is more active than "eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds."
I may be wrong about this and I welcome any discussion that may sway me otherwise.
Your interpretation is your interpretation, so if you say so, I'll just remove that perception check and let someone else do it. Personally, I'd judge that only standing still and looking around isn't that much of an active action.

I’d probably interpret that that same way, I’m not going to lie. But I’ll happily take the burden of being on watch.
No thank you. You need some rest. I’ll keep watch. Baik says, not ready to budge. You all appear to be much better fighters, so I think you should get rest.

Velmine rushes in to attack the new ooze with her amazing ability to crit. As her rapier sinks home acid bursts from the wound dealing 2 Acid damage to Velmine. The ooze looks like it has had a bad day. Velmine then retreats away from the ooze (without provoking an opportunity attack), where she notices that her rapier has also been scarred by the acid. (-1 damage, I have added it to your rapier under customization. It now has a 1d8+3 into of a 1d8+4)

Spending 2 hit die. My hit die is 1d6+3. If I spend 2 does that mean 2d6+6? Below is just 2d6+3 until I know
7
Well that's almost couldn't have gone worse
Rockcrusher lvl 2 Goliath Barbarian Horde of the Dragon Queen
Taggart lvl 6 Air Genasi Blood Hunter Tomb of Annihilation
Shadow lvl 3 variant feral tiefling rogue Shackled City
Yes you get to add your Con Modifier (in this case +3) to each dice roll. So that lousy 6 becomes a lousy 9
"Alright, I'll keep guard, then." (Expending 3 hit dice)
Perception 12
Hit dice: 19
