Jambiya crouches down, pulling a snack from her pouch and holding it out, then tossing it gently to the rat. "Hey there. For you. Have there been other two legs like us down here recently?"
Ring of Inspiration has one charge in it, allows her to roll Erric's d8 twice and take the highest, then add it to the ability check. So...

Above ground, Maldorn is not quite ready to let the fountain go and to refocus their efforts. At least not yet. Her murmurs to himself: "Secret passage?"He looks very closely at the defaced statue, hoping to lower its raised arm or find a hidden button of some sort.
Aseid, it's entirely possible Dirk would have been fairly vague. It's been many years since the treasure was buried. He'd probably just say that it was buried beneath the corpse of his friend who they buried in haste. He might remember that it was in the southwest corner of the ruin.
The rodent pauses, dips toward the snack before looking back at Jambiya again. Its nose and whiskers gyrate. Finally, it hops forward and picks up the snack in its mouth, turns and runs a foot away before stopping and turning to hold the snack in its tiny hands and nibble on the edge. After a few nibbles, the rodent conveys to Jambiya that it has not seen any two legs in these dark tunnels. Only in the other tunnels.
Maldorn and Aseid clamber over the statue looking for some hidden secret. Behind them comes the clearing of a throat. They look and see the middle-aged halfling named Milo Goodleaf standing in his open doorway with his arms crossed over his chest and giving the two humans a rather dubious look. "What are you doing?" he asks.
The rodent first conveys that none of the dark tunnels are safe. It then conveys that it reaches the tunnels where it sees two-legs by heading east (according to the map above), but it says only very small creatures can go the way it goes.
Jambiya will convey to Erric what the rat has told her. "Thank you," she says, tossing him another treat. "If we can't get there from here, we should join Maldorn and Aseid above and find another way down."

"We are studying that statue," with absolute honesty answered Aseid. "This is the fountain, I assume. And yet it does not work." Every single word was a word of truth and yet all of them protected the secret as well as an elaborated lie. "May I ask what brought you here, Mr..." He paused and looked at the halfling expectedly.
Maldorn lets Aseid deal with the curious gnome and continues looking over the statue (I don't think we got a resolution for our combined searching, did we?)
The halfling continues to give Maldorn and Aseid a queer look. "That statue hasn't worked since the rift opened up. I suppose those that fixed up the square were too busy fixing houses and businesses to worry about the fountain. You think you can fix it?" he asks, starting to sound genuine.
"May I ask what brought you here, Mr..."
"Goodleaf," the halfling says in a more friendly tone. "But call me Milo. We met last night at the Arms."
"Forgive me, a lot had happened from yesterday. My name is Aseid." Aseid did not remember that halfling but it was not important right now. "I can not promise we can fix the fountain, but to know it for sure we do need to investigate it." He turned to Maldorn. "I suspect the pies had to go this way." He pointed at the southwest corner of the ruin.
Erric nods and thanks the rodent, and offers Jambiya his arm for a cheerful promenade out of the sewers. "What glamorous lives we lead! I must confess I'm a little confused about what we're doing here. Trying to find a treasure your dads mentioned, along with Aseid, and these gnomes have some kind of scheme afoot with the rod and wire and probably some lies? Protected by gargoyles? What is going on? I can't make sense of it."
When they get to the surface and join the bigs, he looks to see where the eastern direction the rodent indicated must be.
“I know! It’s a puzzle. Frankly, I’m more interested now than when I thought it was just a treasure hunt.” Jambiya skips ahead to the fountain once they get above ground.

Maldorn gives Aseid an "Ah-huh" and continues looking over the fountain.
(OOC: Again, I'm not sure we ever got a resolution for those investigation rolls. I guess we got interrupted by the halfling, but Maldorn is pushing through.)
No. 1 is Highboar Bakery. No. 2 has a sign with the single word "Signs" painted on it. Ironically, it's the most unprofessional looking of all the signs you can see in the Square. No. 3 is Milo's house. No. 4 is Locksmith Lockforge. No. 5 is an apothecary. No. 6 is Piffernackle and Sons. No. 7 is The Cadaver's Arms. It's a tavern. And No. 8 is the ruined temple. The arrow is how you entered town.
Milo moves closer to the fountain, now genuinely curious.
Maldorn and Aseid, in your investigations, you find no buttons or levers or secrets. The statue does seem to be slightly loose. A strong push might move it.
Jambiya and Erric, as you climb out of the trap door and back into the temple ruin, immediately to the east is the west wall of the Cadaver's Arms. As you leave the ruin, you see Maldorn and Aseid crawling all over the fountain at the center of the Square. There appears to be a halfling watching them work.
Erric peers at the tavern. “Maybe the rat is a gambler and takes a tunnel to go to the tavern every night to play cards with those gnomes. And then when the little one loses — small paws can’t really hold the cards, you see, he invites them down into the other tunnels for a game with very tiny cards that he can hold better, and he wins his money back.”Erric says to Jambiya, but he’s smiling, so it’s hard to tell if he’s entertained by a sincere theory or jesting.

"Well, Mr. Milo" Maldorn finally speaks up. "How about you put that curiosity of yours to work and help us push this here statue?"
"What?" Milo asks, looking alarmed. "Why? How will that fix anything?"
