Benagol you take a shot and it falls well short of any of the Griffons who are 300 feet away.
Griffon 10 moves 160 feet closer to the boat. They are flying about 80 feet up in the air, which makes them roughly 160 feet away from the deck of the boat (this is ROUGH math).
Gerry, you're move!

Gerry will take flight 30 feet towards the nearest gryphon. He’ll invoke his Sacred Weapon as a bonus action. Before he lifts off he’ll cast bless on himself, Rubin and Reggie.

As Rubin ducks behind the railing for some cover, three more griffons fly 160 closer to the boat. The griffons are forming a V formation, as they prepare to attack the ship.
Ardeth, you're up! The sailors prepare to fire the ballista as Ardeth is taking their move.

Here goes our broken flying paladin!
You are now 130 feet away from Griffon 10, and soon to be Griffon 2 and 9.
DM - A Quest for the Shunned City (Groups 1 and 2)
Griffon 2 and 9 move 160 feet as well. The griffons move closer to the boat and Gerry flying in the air!
Rubin, you're up! Griffon 2, 9, and 10 are with 180 feet range of where you stand.
DM - A Quest for the Shunned City (Groups 1 and 2)
Rubin casts bless on himself, Ardeth, and Reggie. He then ducks down behind a railing, mast, or something else nearby where he can get cover.
(Rubin already has bless on himself from Gerry.)

fine, be that way... I'll figure a different action, the problem is they are all too far out for Rubin to do anything.
Rubin takes the dodge action as he ducks for cover. Max range on hand crossbow is 120, so enemy are no where close enough.
Leave that decision to the DM! Lol

Ardeth will move up to the sailors manning the ballista and help operate the weapon.
Initative count 10: ship actions.
With the help of Ardeth, the sailors aim and fire the ballista at Griffon 10.
Ballista: Attack: 8 Damage: 13
The sailors on the grappling guns stand steady, waiting for a shot on the griffons.
DM - A Quest for the Shunned City (Groups 1 and 2)
The shot veers right, but had enough distance to hit the griffon.
Griffons 7 and 5 move up to continue the V formation.
Reggie, you're move!
