You have heard of the Uthgardt barbarians—a black-haired and blue-eyed people; large, hale, and bloodthirsty. You know them as vicious raiders who pillage and destroy any caravan or homestead they come across, and rarely if ever trade for goods with outsiders.
Uthgardt speak their own language and have a tribal structure. Numerous Uthgardt tribes have been vanquished over the years, and at least one tribe previously thought to be extinct has returned in force. It's unknown to you how many Uthgardt tribes there are scattered throughout the North, but you know that their "territory" often overlaps with land claimed by civilized races, orcs, and goblinoids.
"Wow. I didn't know you were so smart to Rip. I hope none of them got your girl." Thinking for a minute he then chimes in. "I'll beat them up for you if they did."
Angel says aloud. He's ready to go find Rip's family.
"As much as I understand the sentiment, let's hope it doesn't come to that. They have their own sense of honor, but yes they are violent. We never had to directly deal with them in Silverymoon, but we are aware of them. Whenever we venture out, we were careful to avoid their territories. If we had to battle them all, even just one tribe actually, it may be our last day on Toril."
After a moment of thought, Ink continues, "There are various tribes each with their own totem spirit, and while all are dangerous, there's only one I'd say were viscous - I forget the name, but I think their totem animal is that of a wolf. While the other tribes battle for survival, this one seemed actually bloodthirsty."
It doesn't take long to reach the eastern gate of Yartar. Beyond the city walls, the Evermoor Way quickly transitions from a stone path to a gravel road.
The guard at the gates nods as you pass. "Careful out there," he warns. "Been getting reports of giant attacks on villages, and of course the Uthgardts have been a problem for months."
"I've only ever seen hill giants, and that rarely," says the gate guard. "But the giants some folk described a few days back didn't sound like no hill giants I've ever seen. Said they looked like great big statues made of stone, moving about."
Ink sighs. "Stone giants. Like you would imagine, they are the slowest to act - and typically the most thoughtful, rational, and wisest of the giants. If they are acting out, then giant society, and our world, are out of sorts. This is most troubling."
"The only two groups we haven't heard about are the frost and storm giants. May the gods help us if the latter is moving against the people of the north."
Asking the guard, "Any reports on what they were doing? Perhaps seeking something out? Where did these witnesses come from?"
"Beats me. Just said they'd been traveling for half a week and that their village was torn apart by these things. Thought it was a tall tale at the time!"
"I found it more 'punny,' myself," the other gate guard pipes up.
---
The Evermoor Way cuts a straight path for a while, heading due east. You pass a number of groups on their way to Yartar—mostly carts belonging to merchants or villagers. There's also a knight that displays the symbol of the Order of the Gauntlet prominently on his pauldron. He nods at you chivalrously as he passes on his horse, with his scrawny squire in tow.
You recognize the symbol of the Order, but the man's face isn't familiar to you.
He sees you looking and says, "Greetings, fellows, I am Jordeth Tavilson of the Order of the Gauntlet. This is my squire, Bran. Have you any news of the recent giant threat in this region?"
"We'll trade ye our news fer yers lad. What lies ta th' east?"
"Ha ha! A dwarven bargain, what a pleasure on this fine day. Very well good master, but I believe that, for it to be a fair exchange, you owe me a couple names as well!" He winks good-naturedly.
“Who are the Uthgardts?” Angel asks Ink, who Angel believes knows everything.
