Ink notices a small sigil on the right side of the door, which matches a similar sigil scratched into the stone next to the door. They look magical.
Ink examines the sigil, again with some guidance from Flint, trying to identify its arcane nature (e.g., ward? locking mechanism? etc...?) // Arcana11 plus 2 //
Rip hears a curious skittering noise following his knock, coming from the other side of the door...then, silence.
Marav, with his untrained eyes, notes that the symbols Ink is checking out are, indeed, identical. There's one on the door, and one on the wall next to the door.
Ink can tell that the runes are magical, but he doesn't quite know for what. They aren't familiar to him, so he can't identify their purpose or magical school by sight.

Rip calls to mind all sorts of horrors from stories past...gnolls, goblins, giant arachnids, lizard-men in deep caves. The sound he heard beyond the door—brief, scratching, rapid movement—could have been anything.
As you stand here contemplating, you can hear the patter of rain through the trapdoor above you.
"I think that door might open if we touch the sigils, or perhaps just one of them - but I can try that using mage hand from a good bit away. Before we do that though, how about we let some fresh air in - even if it is a little wet."
Ink heads over to the trap door along the roof and tries to open it up.
The magical "sigils" are on & near the closed, upright door that leads to the the third floor.
The trapdoor, on the other hand, seems to be a sturdy, well-built, pitched door that swings out from the inside. There's nothing particularly interesting about it.
"I think that door might open if we touch the sigils, or perhaps just one of them - but I can try that using mage hand from a good bit away. Before we do that though, how about we let some fresh air in - even if it is a little wet."
Ink heads over to the trap door along the roof and tries to open it up.
The trap door budges a little, but seems to be swollen from moisture...or perhaps the tar has created a gluing effect from disuse.

It takes Ink more than a little time to force the door open. The pitch it's covered in, while ensuring watertightness, has had the effect of cementing a connection with the frame. With about a minute's worth of effort, the sturdy trapdoor finally dislodges and swings upward to allow some rain into the tower, lightly pelting Ink and any standing below the hatch.
The sky above is a mix of gray clouds and blue sky—both sunny and rainy.
"Well, shall we open the door? Might as well - whatever fate waits for us behind that door is no worse than any other one... if you want you may want to get back some."
Ink gives enough time for those who want to move back to do so...
Calling up through the trap door, Ink says, "Marav, I'm trying one of the sigils."
From thirty feet away, with the new scimitar in one hand, and the short-sword Blood in the other, Ink conjures a mage hand which floats its way towards the door to press the sigil on the wall.
As Ink reaches with his magic hand to touch the magical symbols, several things happen at once...
Electrical energy starts to lance out, coruscating from the wall of the tower's small landing area, making a ring around the inside of its circular wall and expanding inwards towards you!
There is a thud that comes from the third-floor door and it begins to creak open. At the same time, the trap door slams shut, as if suddenly blown over by a strong wind. The torches you're holding in your hands are also suddenly doused, plunging the tiny area into darkness.
