Hi. I am reading on the Umbral Sight ability of the Gloomstalker and trying to get a grip of how it should work before i hopefully reach that level.
The rules says: "While in darkness, you are invisible to any creature that relies on darkvision to see you in that darkness."
Here is my understanding:
I stand in a dark corridor *Human cannot see me (since he wouldn't be able to anyway) *Dwarf cannot se me (his darkvision doesn't work, and he wouldn't be able to see me otherwise) *Any creature that _only_ have darkvision cannot see me
I stand in a dimly-lit corner *Human can see me under dim light rules due to his normal sight *Dwarf can see me under dim-light rules due to his normal sight, but gains no benefit from darkvision *Any creature that _only have darkvision cannot see me
I stand in a dark corridor *Human cannot see me (since he wouldn't be able to anyway) *Dwarf cannot se me (his darkvision doesn't work, and he wouldn't be able to see me otherwise) *Any creature that _only_ have darkvision cannot see me
Darkvision is an enhancement of normal vision. There's no such thing as having only darkvision. Otherwise, you're correct.

If you're not standing in darkness Umbral Sight doesn't apply. Creatures see you normally. If they have darkvision, they follow the darkvision rules for dim light.

The fact that it only calls out Darkvision makes me fall back on the Specific vs General concept. It is specifically calling out Darkvision and being in darkness, thus it does not have an effect on any other type of vision/senses.
Can the ranger pause this effect for the sake of allies?
Ask your DM. "You are also adept at evading creatures that rely on darkvision" suggests that it's a learned skill that requires active effort, but on the other hand the feature doesn't go away if you're incapacitated. Personally I'd allow a Ranger to temporarily turn it off. As far as I know there haven't been any official rulings on this.
How does this effect interact with a warlock's Devil Sight or a creature's blind sight?
First off, why do ppl keep making dark vision grant normal vision in darkness. It doesn't. It grants dim light conditions.
And yes, it only works if a creature is using darkvision to see in darkness. If they have blindsight or devils sight...then it doesn't make you invisible to them
That being said, its a lazy piece of writing by wizards and immensely abusable. There is no limitation on the invisibility. So as long as the environment is darkness, a creature with darkvision will never see you no matter what you are doing. You can attack all day long and it never breaks the invisibility. They could fix it quite easily. Simply make it read "When the character is moving stealthily in darkness, they are invisible to creatures using dark vision to see".
One sentence that not only makes it make sense (because duh, you are trying to be sneaky), removes the abuse from it as attacking and other similar actions will break the stealth and then the invisibility.

I have seen a lot of unofficial discussion but would like to hear the intent of the ability (RAI). Thank you.

It doesn't. Those aren't darkvision.
